How many times must I pretend I'm not going to vote for Janet?

Eric H., Saturday, 24 January 2009 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not as fond of these albums as I'd have originally thought after rereading the list. I wanna say Life After Death, but can't say when was the last time I heard it -- or The Fat of the Land. Voted for The Velvet Rope, which then and now still sounds like the albums she was born to make.

LeAnn Rimes sure was A Big Deal for a while, no? Howard Stern too.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 24 January 2009 00:46 (seventeen years ago)

*like the album she was born to make.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 24 January 2009 00:46 (seventeen years ago)

pretty yucky list. 2nd-best wu album over 2nd-best biggie album.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 24 January 2009 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

Wu-Tang all the fuckin way

Courtney Love's Jew Loan Officer (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 24 January 2009 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

Albums I'd have voted for if Velvet Rope didn't hit #1 (which I actually don't even remember it doing; i thought it was something of a flop):

Life After Death - The Notorious B.I.G.
Share My World - Mary J. Blige
The Fat of the Land - The Prodigy
Butterfly - Mariah Carey

Eric H., Saturday, 24 January 2009 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

The Prodigy's a real easy choice for me. (I like Ma$e, too. And yeah, some of those other rap ones. Never really got into that Garth CD, oddly enough.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 24 January 2009 00:58 (seventeen years ago)

B.I.G. will probably walk this one easy, and not without reason - for me it's between that and The Fat of the Land which isn't nearly as omg genius alert but I love it unreservedly, and still. Guilty confession, I dig Janet but it wasn't at all where I was at in '97 so I have never even heard the Velvet Rope.

J0hn D., Saturday, 24 January 2009 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

I went with Fleetwood Mac, because I voted for No Doubt last time. I really didn't like popular music these years. I also wasn't really exposed to it in my daily life.

I guess it is nice that Rap, fake country, fake R&B and 70s retreads could all exist on the charts at the same time, but it all seems too big and glossy to me.

james k polk, Saturday, 24 January 2009 01:01 (seventeen years ago)

I almost want to vote for Pop just for the "boom-cha!"s at the end of "Discotheque".

mose def (kenan), Saturday, 24 January 2009 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 5 February 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

J0hn, you should hear The Velvet Rope sometime; you'd like it, I think, a lot. (I voted for it.)

Matos W.K., Thursday, 5 February 2009 05:49 (seventeen years ago)

zero chance of me voting for anything but the dance here

carbonara not glue (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2009 05:51 (seventeen years ago)

I also voted for The Velvet Rope

the Nigga who killed reggaeton (The Reverend), Thursday, 5 February 2009 05:56 (seventeen years ago)

I had totally forgotten that The Fat of the Land went to #1 in the States. Kinda o_O in retrospect. For me, this comes down to the Biggie vs. Wu battle of overstuffed double-LP sophomore albums (only technically in Wu's case, but whatever). Looking at these late-90's polls, its pretty impressive how many (gold)polished turds No Limit was able to sell to suburban teenagers.

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Thursday, 5 February 2009 08:27 (seventeen years ago)

"Velvet Rope". The last great Janet Jackson album.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 5 February 2009 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

JANET holy shit that is a great, great album

then biggie

lex pretend, Thursday, 5 February 2009 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

i thought OK Computer was a #1 album in the US?

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

Kid A and In Rainbows are their only US #1's.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 5 February 2009 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

i forgot how out of control rap double CDs were back then, THREE of them on this list alone. still gotta vote for Big, though.

n00bian princess (some dude), Thursday, 5 February 2009 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

Damn. This was the year I started working at Sam Goody. Damn.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 5 February 2009 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

nosotros niggamos (HI DERE), Thursday, 5 February 2009 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

"Kick In The Door" fits more into its first two lines than most of the albums here have combined.
