Belgium: dEUS and Evil Superstars. Sadly the latter has broked up in several mediocre bands (such as Millionaire). dEUS is pretty DARN GODLIKE. You might be able to download some of their toons from www.hotellounge.com, I think.

Chocolat from Japan, Shermans from Sweden, second the Corpo, The Chills (from a land down under) and for the rest of the world you might as well go for Paul Simon who invented world music. Didn't he?

Achtung! Nordic music is where it's at. Check out Soundtrack Of Our Lives for pop-rock-psych mish mash action, The Hives for your new favourite band, Múm for acoustic electronica, and for retro action Bo Hansen for spaced out wibbly music.

DV, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Decapitated from Poland, Insision from Sweden, and Zaza from Thailand.

Molotov (Mexico): Rage Against The Machine on a fratboy tip.
Articolo 31 (Italy): Early 90s style afrocentric hip-pop.
And Manu Chao. Obviously.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rage Against The Machine on a fratboy tip

A bit redundant there.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Soundtrack of Our Lives Soundtrack of Our Lives Soundtrack of Our Lives!!! I've only heard a couple of the Hives songs (compared to the several album of SoOLS that I've heard) but these guys blow them away, albeit in completely different style.

Japan: the Masaki Batoh/Ghost/Cosmic Invention/Sweet & Honey axis is my favorite. Hippie-folk/krautrock/arasive noise freakouts. They used to rehearse in abandoned churches.

Shaky Mo Collier, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

blonde redhead.........

sam, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has the rest of the world produced anything worth mentioning? Oh good grief, there are thousands. Canada (Neil Young!). Ireland (Van Morrison). France has been going strong in dance recently. Germany did some good early electronica. Jamaica, most notably, has this style called reggae, which has been producing lots of wonderful music since the '60s, and the rest of the Caribbean has produced calypso, soca and lots of good latin music.

Some other favourites of mine: the Saints, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds/Birthday Party, Avalanches, Chills (Australia), Atari Teenage Riot (Germany), Joseph Spence (Bahamas), Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens and the Makgona Tsohle Band, Holy Spirits Choir (SA), Kanda Bongo Man, Diblo-Dibala, Freddie de Majunga (Zaire), Khaled, Rachid Taha, Chaba Zahouania (Algeria), Amayenge, Shallawambe (Zambia), Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (Pakistan), Four Brothers, Oliver Mutukudzi, Real Sounds (Zimbabwe), Teebee (Norway), Ofra Haza (Israel), Ali Farka Toure (Mali).

This is less scratching the surface than just noting that there is a surface.

H, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm a new zealander so i better plug some local bands that are about to be released overseas

pacifier: used to be called shihad but they had to change their name because americans thought shihad sounded too much like jihad. they've just finished recording their new album in the states which will be released in august

che fu: rapper / singer who records and tours with a live band (the krates). he recently played at the royal gala concert and is about to be released in the UK. hip hop with soul

the datsuns: similar to the hives / the strokes. recently signed to richard branson's v2 label

salmonella dub: live dub / reggae band. already big in france (apparently)

concord dawn: kind of industrial drum'n'bass. currently being name checked by some of the biggest d'n'b djs in the world

zed: pop/rock band. hugely popular with the teenage girl demographic. recently signed with interscope, being released in the US sometime this year

there's a whole lot of other new zealand bands i could list here, please email me for more info on any of these bands

steve, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

None of my favourite music comes from US/UK at this point.

Scratch Pet Land are Belgian (check out the new Fan Club Orchestra CD on TKCB/ Sonig, which is them in disguise). Fabio Viscogliosi is a Paris-based Italian whose 'Spazio' (Microbe Records) is just great; spare, sinuous guitar songs. Nobukazu Takemura's 'Songbook' CD is also excellent; girlish voices singing odd phonemes over plonky surreal sub-Satie synth. Haruomi Hosono's 'Monad Box' is retro heaven, as are The Plastics.

I also currently rate Dominique Petitgand (Belgian sound artist using found voices), Carsten Nicolai (icy purism), Mum, Tarwater, Gutevolk. Am listening to Holger Hiller radio pieces from the 80s ('Keischlahuwe') and Miharu Koshi (synthy classical Japanese chanteuse). Not to mention tons of kabuki music!

Momus, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmm, D-Sound and Bertine Zietletz from Norway. A coupla my favorite bands, introduced by an ex-flatmate who's Norwegian.

Also Jaurim from S. Korea--they rock the hizzowse and don't sing in English.

laurie, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sweden - bob hund, Fireside, Bear Quartet, Pluxus, Eggstone, Kristofer Åström, Stina Nordenstam and many many more.

Marc, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Radio Birdman were pretty damn good and Australia isn't the US or the UK, really, so I will pimp them. Similar to the garage/protopunk stuff from Detroit in the '60s and '70s (one of their members was from there) but they've got sort of a pop edge to 'em. "Love Kills" is fucking awesome.
Also, from Japan: GUITAR WOLF. Think the Hives only ten times more batshit.

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Circle from Finland, just outdid the singer from Can at the garage tonight. Dureforsog - the Danish Bungle/Residents. Sigur Ros, GYBE...

marinecreature, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't blonde redhead based out of NYC?? (i know their ethnicities)

Ron, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to mention tons of kabuki music!
Bah! Too low brow . I prefer Noh theatre.

cuba libre (nathalie), Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Gentlemen, from Tasmania. Heavy, punk-metal with lyrics that sound as though Yeats wrote them. Rent Boy are damn good too. (both on a label called Consumer Productions http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Movie/9629/index.html)

Electronica: Pimmon from Sydney Hip Hop: Dark Tower from NZ Big Dumb RAWK: The Legends Of Motorsport - Melbourne Weird Indie Guitar Drones: Chris Smith - Melbourne again, has an album out US label Emperor Jones called Map Ends 1995 - 2001

Andrew, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stephanie Sun from singapore, kind of faye wong-ish mandarin pop mixed with Hokkien folk. I have her second album (which roughly translates into My desired happiness). some of the songs are bland, but there are also several amazing ones (the title track and Tien hei hei).

lid, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
