Is there any chance at all that this will be good?

makeitpop, Sunday, 25 January 2009 11:03 (seventeen years ago)

jesus christ

jordy (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 January 2009 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

lol i thought this was going to be one of those projects rappers talk about but never actually make. or make, but no one releases it.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Sunday, 25 January 2009 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

i saw two profiles of him published last month - one in spin and one in gq - and both said he was basically recording only these rock songs now

jordy (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 January 2009 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

whats worse is you read interviews with guys like rza who really should know better bigging up wayne for this sort of thing.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Sunday, 25 January 2009 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

i'm just wondering whether this will make rap fans embrace 808s & Heartbreak more by comparison, or just increase the whole backlash to all rappers-not-rapping

some dude, Sunday, 25 January 2009 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

lol I just sent a youtube link of this to a friend in gchat, and the window cut off the title just enough that he thought it said "prom queer"

some dude, Sunday, 25 January 2009 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

i think the backlash to rappers non rapping is pretty small scale really (mostly from critics/hardcore rap fans/rappers), the wider public tend to always embrace it.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Sunday, 25 January 2009 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno, i think that was true in the past with stuff like "Hey Ya!" but it's reached such a fever pitch of debate with such strong opinions on both sides at this point, it's gotta boil over at some point.

some dude, Sunday, 25 January 2009 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

loool prom queer is epically awful

ice cr?m, Sunday, 25 January 2009 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

im not seeing it though. outside of hip hop circles, the average person listening to pop radio where love lockdown gets major play doesnt have those hang ups. they just hear it, think 'nice tune' and thats that.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Sunday, 25 January 2009 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

Hahahahahaha oh god this is so lame.

Matt DC, Sunday, 25 January 2009 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

I think it's fascinating to hear a popular rapper's interpretation of what 'rock music' sounds like. I'm going to guess that those wanky solos in the verses are his own? The whole thing sounds a touch like 311 in some parts.

makeitpop, Sunday, 25 January 2009 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

i kinda like it. then again, i thought Body Count was a great record.

That awful singing thing he does at the end of Official Girl had already convinced me I did not need to hear Wayne's vocodered rubbish vocals, especially over a linkin park karaoke backing track.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 25 January 2009 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

Keep The Dogs Away (Ioannis), Monday, 26 January 2009 08:56 (seventeen years ago)

who thinks this will actually be big? i can see it getting daytime airplay on radio one. it would be better without the autotune but its not as godawful as i was expecting. id rather hear a milli of course.

Won't do anything over here - Weezy has never really taken off in Britain and this certainly isn't the song to break him.

Bondzilla vs Mechaholmes (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2009 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

Won't do anything over here - Weezy has never really taken off in Britain

this is true but this is the sort of country which sends kevin rudolf top 5 while 'a milli' misses the top 100 completely. i am so ashamed of britain's taste in music.

lex pretend, Monday, 26 January 2009 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

plus, inexplicably, jay-z's shitty linkin park mashup/duet is probably one of his most popular songs over here, thanks to radio one. i dont mind that a milli didnt crack the charts - i like it as an underground song.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 26 January 2009 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

i would honestly, honestly prefer to hear wayne singing totally off-key untreated than to hear him auto-tuned/vocodered into next week. i find that effect unbelievably distracting. singing on-key is overrated anyway.

two weeks pass...

I don't like most of Lil Wayne's songs and I am really reluctant to buy into the hype and whatnot but I heard one of the songs from this album "Amazing Love," and it actually freaked me out a little. Not the music, or the lyrics, particularly, but he sounds so fucking dehumanized and empty, not to mention the autotune is slathered on so thick I literally could not understand anything he's singing besides "missing every Christmas like forevaahh," I feel like describing these songs as "good" or "bad" is missing the point completely. They are compelling in a really weird way, but it makes me feel empty to listen to them.

Gendou Ikari, Saturday, 21 February 2009 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

basically every year end blurb about this is like "yeah it's not perfect - in fact it's really inconsistent, but that makes us love it more! what an awesome look into the crazy drug alien lil wayne! he is so interesting that he can't even make a good front to back album!"

The tracklist for Lil Wayne's upcoming I Am Not a Human Being EP is filthy with third-tier Young Money features (T-Streets, ugh), but the title single ;is kind of a blast, a nice throwback to old-school, Rick Rubin rap-rock. If Rebirth had stuck with this sound, it might have been a pretty good album.

Tellingly, the track is one of the only tracks on the EP without a feature, so I'm guessing the rest of the disc won't go this hard.

Evan R, Friday, 17 September 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

that beat is pretty good but they really fucked it up by having it switch up so frequently -- they should've just let the riff play out straight through in the verses -- wayne would've killed the flow

also of course his raps are so lol eye roll simple now that i couldn't imagine listening to any of his shit more than once

J0rdan S., Friday, 17 September 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

He has leaned a little heavy on one-off singers lately, but I think that's in part because so much of his recent output has been guest verses (or, on Rebirth, songs with scant verses). He's at his best on mixtapes where he can just keep building and building on verses, jokes, motifs and images without interruption, picking up momentum. I don't expect the new EP to allow him to do that—way too many showcase features, and collabs with Drake, who always slows songs way down—but I'm holding out hope that he gets the Young Money cross promotion out of his system with that EP, leaving Tha Carter 4, whenever it arrives, as his untainted Return To Rap.
