lol i thought this was going to be one of those projects rappers talk about but never actually make. or make, but no one releases it.

i saw two profiles of him published last month - one in spin and one in gq - and both said he was basically recording only these rock songs now

whats worse is you read interviews with guys like rza who really should know better bigging up wayne for this sort of thing.

i'm just wondering whether this will make rap fans embrace 808s & Heartbreak more by comparison, or just increase the whole backlash to all rappers-not-rapping

i think the backlash to rappers non rapping is pretty small scale really (mostly from critics/hardcore rap fans/rappers), the wider public tend to always embrace it.

i dunno, i think that was true in the past with stuff like "Hey Ya!" but it's reached such a fever pitch of debate with such strong opinions on both sides at this point, it's gotta boil over at some point.

I think it's fascinating to hear a popular rapper's interpretation of what 'rock music' sounds like. I'm going to guess that those wanky solos in the verses are his own? The whole thing sounds a touch like 311 in some parts.

around the way girl is quite impressively out of tune in places. you know, given that he's using autotune.

i would honestly, honestly prefer to hear wayne singing totally off-key untreated than to hear him auto-tuned/vocodered into next week. i find that effect unbelievably distracting. singing on-key is overrated anyway.

I don't like most of Lil Wayne's songs and I am really reluctant to buy into the hype and whatnot but I heard one of the songs from this album "Amazing Love," and it actually freaked me out a little. Not the music, or the lyrics, particularly, but he sounds so fucking dehumanized and empty, not to mention the autotune is slathered on so thick I literally could not understand anything he's singing besides "missing every Christmas like forevaahh," I feel like describing these songs as "good" or "bad" is missing the point completely. They are compelling in a really weird way, but it makes me feel empty to listen to them.

The tracklist for Lil Wayne's upcoming I Am Not a Human Being EP is filthy with third-tier Young Money features (T-Streets, ugh), but the title single <a href=http://www.thefader.com/2010/09/15/video-lil-wayne-im-not-a-human-being/>;is kind of a blast</a>, a nice throwback to old-school, Rick Rubin rap-rock. If Rebirth had stuck with this sound, it might have been a pretty good album.

Tellingly, the track is one of the only tracks on the EP without a feature, so I'm guessing the rest of the disc won't go this hard.

that beat is pretty good but they really fucked it up by having it switch up so frequently -- they should've just let the riff play out straight through in the verses -- wayne would've killed the flow

He has leaned a little heavy on one-off singers lately, but I think that's in part because so much of his recent output has been guest verses (or, on Rebirth, songs with scant verses). He's at his best on mixtapes where he can just keep building and building on verses, jokes, motifs and images without interruption, picking up momentum. I don't expect the new EP to allow him to do that—way too many showcase features, and collabs with Drake, who always slows songs way down—but I'm holding out hope that he gets the Young Money cross promotion out of his system with that EP, leaving Tha Carter 4, whenever it arrives, as his untainted Return To Rap.
