I have no idea what the lol vote would be -- "It Doesn't Matter"? the Bono one?

"Fast Car" was kinda dope and I have a weird soft spot for "Party To Damascus," but we probably coulda limited this to just the first album.

there are some artists who arent album artists or singles artists. wyclef is one of them.

have we had a pras vs lauryn vs wyclef poll?

special guest stars mark bronson, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

I don't care what anybody says, I love all of these:

We Trying To Stay Alive (ft. The Bee Gees, Pras & John Forte)
Gone Til November
Cheated (To All The Girls)
It Doesn't Matter (ft. The Rock)
Another One Bites The Dust (ft. Pras, Free and Canibus)

"Cheated," the rock remix, is the only one I bought the single for (twice! CD and then cheapo vinyl!). It works as both a sendup and just as a straight old fashioned Good Song. Anybody know the actual lyrics to the first verse? The one that's like "You whatsin' the what's wrong, she's not turning your jaw, she said 'love don't live here no more'..." Love the way he sings it in any case.

The only real problem with Another One Bites The Dust is that he gets outshined by Canibus...

Doctor Casino, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

the only correct answers are "Party To Damascus" and "Perfect Gentleman"

Barack You Like A Husseincane (HI DERE), Monday, 26 January 2009 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

More greatness about Cheated, the "na na" part, where he conveys how bad his girl hurt him by the fact that he played hooky from school - on Friday. Like, sure, we've all skipped a Tuesday or Wednesday, but Friday, the week's already practically over, you have to be pretty bummed to not be able to get through school with the weekend to look forward to. And I lied to my mama... You can read it as deliberately over-the-top goofiness or as sincere suffering, I dig it.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

i always thought it was funny that he sampled pop hits as shamelessly as Puffy but never got nearly as much flak for it...gotta give him credit for "Gone Till November," though, as far as I know that melody wasn't jacked from anything else and it's a pretty lovely tune. nice to remember in this age of strummin' and sangin' rappers who can't carry a tune or play a chord to save their lives.

some dude, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

"it was funny that he sampled pop hits as shamelessly as Puffy but never got nearly as much flak"

it was prob cos on every song of his he rambles on almost apologetically about what hes doing on the song. its hard to poke fun at a guy like that.

I don't understand what you mean about rambling on apologetically...did he say "sorry I stole your song, Freddie Mercury" or something and I missed it.

also it's really, really easy to poke fun at a guy like Wyclef. it's almost hard not to.

some dude, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

The track with Bono is definitely the worst.

It Doesn't Matter is my favourite

Bondzilla vs Mechaholmes (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2009 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

'GTN' is some corny bullshit wtf.

special guest stars mark bronson, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - like when he did that wish you were here cover and did a little commentary at the start of the song as if to apologise for why he would be covering punk floyd. and then he does that more general commentary thing like on the song where he featured EWF. instead of just letting them sing, he has to TELL you who it is. hes not the only one guilty of this i know, but i find it more annoying when he does it because i think he has talent, he just uses it for really messy/unsubtle ideas re: being 'ecleftic'. it is easy to poke fun at him yeah. im guessing people just dont do it cos its too easy maybe. the consensus on WJ is weird though - on one hand you have people who think hes brilliant, then you have people who find him a bit prematurely smug/just plain shit most of the time (like me).

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 26 January 2009 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

*pink, not punk.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 26 January 2009 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

i always thought it was funny that he sampled pop hits as shamelessly as Puffy but never got nearly as much flak for it..

Cuz he played A Real Instrument.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

kinda. occasionally.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 26 January 2009 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

basically, wyclef was like the diddy of alternative R&B/rap. someone who could be a potentially great fusiony artist, but he had the worst/cheesiest taste imaginable, and the worst ideas about how to put all those cheesy elements together.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 26 January 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand what you mean about rambling on apologetically...did he say "sorry I stole your song, Freddie Mercury" or something and I missed it.

Well, he definitely namechecks the Bee Gees on "Stayin' Alive," and the "Another One Bites The Dust" lyrics do refer to Freddie Mercury, but as part of a confusing plotline about a wax statue of Freddie being stolen from a museum (the video spells it all out).

Doctor Casino, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

tbh I'm not even sure I really ever heard the "Bites The Dust" one...I remember hearing from people "lol now Wyclef is sampling Queen" but never really was exposed to it or got the sense that it was a hit.

some dude, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

i think he was lucky in the fugees cos he had lauryn to keep his diddy-ness in check.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 26 January 2009 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, Lauryn didn't like to sample, she preferred to just take credit for the work of her collaborators.

some dude, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

his turn on 'Nappy Heads' is his career peak really

Bondzilla vs Mechaholmes (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2009 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - which is just better all round. she did it the old fashioned way.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 26 January 2009 15:56 (seventeen years ago)
