Why do american radio stations have the four letter system like KLUX KLAN and so on? Is it some kind of licensing thing?

It's a FCC rule that requires all stations located west of the Mississippi river begin with the letter K while stations located on the east begin with the letter W.

And aping our southern friends Canadian stations start with C but at least out governing body has a sense of humour sometimes giving apropriate names when possible.

these answers don't explain it. it's because they use a registered radio call sign as the station name. however, i don't know if that's a legal requirement in the states, or just because the first station did and the rest followed

My favorite radio station is KLIT (K-Lite radio!) in LA.

it's a legal requirement to say the call sign over the air at the appropriate times, but that doesn't restrict a station to only referring to itself by its call letters.

KLUU, 88.9 FM, Jamestown, ND, Christian Contemporary

KLAN/ - Mix-93 (the Web site seems to not want to really publicize its call letters.)

Looked for these because after I read the thread question, went "What radio station in their right mind would...."

"WGAY" was a big hit with taunting playgrounders in Suburban Washington D.C. in the 1980s (it now goes by WIHT).
