What's your best record shopping bargain

My biggest and best record shopping bargain was Randy Newman's 4CD box set for the princely sum of £16.99 rather than the more usual £55-£60 that was being charged for this set.

What made this even more unusual was that it was in a Virgin Megastore, not known for their amazing sale prices. I also got Nick Lowe's 'The Doings' 4CD set for £12.99. (They were stopping selling box sets in that store because they weren't selling) What's your best ever record shopping bargain?

New 'I'm a cheapskate' answers

mms, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know I've mentioned this before, but I bought Radiohead's Drill EP for 20p from the Corsham Book & Record Shop in 1992.

Before that, it was probably a 7" picture disc of The Cure's Just Like Heaven for 15p.

However, most of the other records that I consider to be bargains are probably not worth a tin of beans to anyone else...

Zanny Gognet, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Why Do The Pretty Birds Sing" from a branch of Cash Converters (or "We buy your stuff so you can afford heroin") for £1.50.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably Pavement's "Slay Tracks" and "Demolition Plot J-7" singles. Got 'em both at an early Pavement show for $2.00 apiece.

mike, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Dare" by the Human League, on perfect vinyl for 20p.

in the same record buying session, 'Spacer' by Sheila B. Devotion on 7" for 10p.

DV, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Severed Heads' _Stretcher_ on vinyl for 99 cents.

Dan Perry, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Albert Ayler -- Live in Greenwich Village: the Complete Impulse Recordings. 2 CDs, new, for 21 Marks. Someone had missread the Euro price as the DM price, so I got it for half-price (and hell, it would have been cheap for €21 as well).

Colin Meeder, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Slits' 'Cut' on CD for 50p (with a bundle of other stuff), Beanos, Croydon.

Mr Swygart, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was 14 I got the vinyl of Quadrophenia with inside photo book and everything for $5 even, at Stereo Jack's on Mass Ave

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure that counts, Tracer, since that package would only run you $3 used now.

Mark, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mütiilation Vampires Of Black Imperial Blood in 1997 for $5. The going rate for it now is about $100...and Katatonia's Brave. Murder. Day. for DM 5...

Siegbran Hetteson, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Skip Spence's original pressing of "Oar" for $8. It was worn, but not that worn.

paul, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Mover Presents Frontal Sickness: "Nightflight (Non-Stop To Kaos)" >>> $1.00 !!!

Paul, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eddie 'Flashin' Fowlkes - "GoodBye Kiss" >>> $1.00 !!!

also, in early 90's when it was already going for $60.00 - $75.00
The Meters - Cabbage Alley >>> $3.95 !!
course, it's only their fourth or fifth best album, but still...

Paul, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've bought loads and loads from car boot sales and charity shops and market stalls. I've no idea what any of them are worth. The best pleasant surprise in that £1-and-under category was probably Eddie Hinton's Very Extremely Dangerous, a year or two ago.

Martin Skidmore, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh loads, car boot sales in N. Yorks keep me going as the record shopping experience is non-existent here. Best recent buys were a Kevin Saunderson double CD compilation for 20p and the BEF songs of quality and distinction 5x7" box set for 50p.

Don't mention the Radiohead drill CD, I remember almost buying it in 92' but I think I spent my money on These Animal Men or something equally worthwhile..now it's worth £200, c'est la vie

Billy Dods, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Mover Presents Frontal Sickness: "Nightflight (Non-Stop To Kaos)" >>> $1.00 !!!

Brock K., Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sun Ra's _Nidhamu_ LP, on Saturn. Garage sale, where everything was a dollar--"Aha!" said the proprietor. "That's a good one. That's TWO dollars." I paid it.

Douglas, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but Mark I'm only 15 now.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sabresonic II for $9 (used), and also Crustation's "Bloom" for a little more than $10 and then selling it for $50.

Leee, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just got Rolling Stones Women of Rock (3-cd set) for $6.00 (the used shop was glutted and had a $2 per disk sale of all the stuff in the back of the room.)

Lord Custos X, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Purchased at "Landfill Records", which is a musty storeroom devoted to housing the tens upon hundreds of unlistenable and scratched copies of Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream and Other Delights: An original, nice-sounding skip-and-crackle free copy of the Superfly soundtrack on LP. Cost: fifty cents.

Also, there was a local CD, record and tape store that stopped buying records, but people dropped them off anyways. The store owner couldn't sell them so he let me pick through the pile and take something for free before they were shipped off to the aforementioned "Landfill". I came out with an scraped-but-listenable Apple Records pressing of Sgt. Pepper's. Total cost: nothing.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

xtc's last single on virgin - "wrapped in grey" - was deleted just before issue and most copies of it were destroyed. they THINK there is about fifty of them in existence. i owned one, which i bought in a charity shop in paignton for 50p before i had any NOTION of it's worth. when i was unemployed i swapped it for about fifteen cd's of xtc bootlegs which although doesn't even BEGIN to match it's worth was fine by me as i don't really care less about the value of these things. what pleased me was the man's desperation to own it (there is actually a photo ONLINE of this cd) and my knowledge i picked it up in the dregs of a charity shop...

also had a superb haul of about twenty really rare soul albums for 75p each from a nottingham charity shop, and came back the next week to find the creation album "we are paintermen" and van dyke park's "song cycle" on original issue for about a pound each. ah the joys of bargains... my aim is to find the "dougal and the blue cat" soundtrack in a charity shop some day (or nick it from my brother in law's collection downstairs...)

commonswings, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cuba libre (nathalie), Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's just that the cash converter up here so befits that slogan it's untrue.

my bargain is dm's '101' 5 years ago. ltd. edition original double cd with book - 3 quid.

piscesboy, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the problem with manc is that you tend to get the feeling in oxfam shops + the like that the bloke with the stall at the record fair has just been in before u + made off with a haul of rare elvis singles + the like.

have i missed out by never once going to a car boot sale ?

piscesboy, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is Dougal and the Blue Cat worth anything then? i'll try and dig mine out if you want to trade

michael, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah Pisces, I live down in Northampton, but I think the Cash Convertors/heroin axis is a common one all across Britain.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never paid more than $4 for an XTC album or CD, new or used. They are the delight of the clearance bin.

1 1 2 3 5, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not sure if "dougal and the blue cat" is worth anything, but it's rare as hell. but part of the joy of the collection of records is discovering vinyl bargains. my cd's are those i wanted and paid for after actively seeking. about 90% of my vinyl is just sheer chance which is why i am glad to have "bernard bresslaw reads hans christian andersen" nestling next to the basil brush album with george martin as his sidekick with the other random dregs of bargain bins i've found hither and thither...

A Pink Floyd CD, an Eagles one, a Scorpions one, one of the Who, and 4 playstation games for 2000/- (about 17 pounds). Of course, only one of eight worked, but at that price what can you expect?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 21 May 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

I've got loads of second hand bargains browsing through Nottingham, London and New York's various back-street shops, but a recent one that springs to mind is Adam F's "Kaos The Anti-Acoustic Warfare" for £2. It's dead orchestral hip hop with some top guest MCs, notably Redman, and refreshingly short at about 45 mins.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 22 May 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

either mahavishnu orchestra's birds of fire for free ("we're just gonna throw it out") or a sealed copy of the LAFMS blorp esette 4cd box for $2.
