Some of the weirder moments in nineties dance music was the mid-nineties mini-fad of dance/house/techno tunes with country & western elements. The best known example of this is of course "Cotton Eye Joe" by Rednex, but there where several others too, like "Swamp Thing" by The Grid (I think this tune started the whole thing), "Everybody Gonfi Gon" by Two Cowboys, and "The Fiddle" by Basic Element. If memory serves me right, Perplexer also had a similar tune, but with bagpipes instead of banjos/fiddles.
Back then I thought the whole fad was quite fun, but I haven't really revisited these tunes ever since. What did/do you think of this stuff? And are there more recent examples of country techno/dance/house? I know Si Begg did a dub remix of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" a few years ago, but that's all I can think of.

it's actually by jackdaw with crowbar.

"Cotton Eye Joe" is a novelty record, and I think that novelty idea permeates the whole concept of using C&W stylings on a techno track, so no-one's really done it since. "Swamp Thing" wasn't bad, but I found "CEJ" to be really annoying. It's even on a compilation album of the worst records ever.

This phenomenon needs to be as tasteless as possible otherwise you get into Moby territory. That said, Dusty Boots by Booka Shade is good.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 12:03 (seventeen years ago)
Eh? The tune I'm talking about is on this compilation, and it's credited to "Van Der Hoog's Country Curative", which I assume is a Si Begg pseudonym like half of the others on that comp.

yes, i know. it is by jackdaw with crowbar who are seemingly not given the credit.
here's the basement jaxx one - http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/335748-01.htm
the track is b-harp

Andrew Weatherall did something on Haunted Dancehall that had a country twang to it, "Tow Truck" maybe? It veers dangerously close to Matt DC's "Moby Territory".

Someone must have looped the intro to "Born to Be Alive" at some point, which is basically country music

Oh yeah, I forgot The Grid had an earlier single called "Texas Cowboys", though this one doesn't really have any proper country elements besides the name:

And here's "Pistolero" by Juno Reactor, though this one seems to be more inspired by Morricone than proper country:

Holy shit, I have this tune on some ancient compilation, but I'd totally forgotten about it! A hardcore techno version of "Duelling Banjos"!
― Tuomas, Saturday, 6 February 2010 13:31 (sixteen years ago)
When I bought the comp I had no idea what "Duelling Banjos" was, I thought "Duelling Techno" was just another hardcore tune. I only made the connection right now!

Not sure if there was a relevant country-techno discussion on a "Timber" thread, but here's Chuck Eddy w/a "Square-Dance-Tronica Mix" playlist:
