"This Is How We Do It", followed by both TLC's, Coolio, and "Kiss from a Rose". The Bryan Adams is actually the only song I dislike.

punk floyd (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:29 (seventeen years ago)

holy shit

jordy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:29 (seventeen years ago)

This is possibly my most formative year ever, btw.

punk floyd (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

Even though I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't like it, I can't see "This Is How We Do It" losing this.

BAROQUE AS A JOKE! (PappaWheelie V), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

Really? I would have predicted one of the TLC songs. (Also, I am killfiling you.)

punk floyd (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

these songs were soooo formative in my life when i was 7 years old.

1. this is how we do it (top 3 favorite songs ever)
2. kiss from a rose (#1 song for singing to girls in 5th grade)
3. waterfalls (10/10)
4. you are not alone (first movie i ever cried in: free willy)
5. gangsta's paradise (unfuckwithable)

jordy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

im right w/ you rev

jordy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

"Kiss From a Rose" is one those songs that feels completely limp and blah, but it doesn't matter because MOST BEAUTIFUL MELODY EVAR.

punk floyd (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:35 (seventeen years ago)

i remember during one super bowl me and my cousin did a dance routine to "this is how we do it" during halftime that i choreographed - we were wearing overalls and diff color bandannas shit was def dope iirc

jordy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:35 (seventeen years ago)

lolol

punk floyd (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:36 (seventeen years ago)

too bad im not at my parents house i could scan this pic i have from that night

jordy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:38 (seventeen years ago)

I can't believe there were so few different #1s. Also, I was sort of surprised that Alanis didn't make it; I would vote "You Oughta Know" over any of these. But: "Kiss from a Rose" and "Waterfalls" both unimpeachable. I'm going with Seal because nothing else that year sounded like Seal.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 29 January 2009 06:06 (seventeen years ago)

FYI "On Bended Knee" was #1 in 1995 for a while

miss precious perfect (musically), Thursday, 29 January 2009 06:22 (seventeen years ago)

FYI I've only been counting songs in the year they first reached #1 since I started this

punk floyd (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 January 2009 06:45 (seventeen years ago)

Creep ~ One Sweet Day > Exhale (Shoop Shoop) ~ Gangsta's Paradise ~ Waterfalls > On Bended Knee ~ Take a Bow ~ You Are Not Alone

double bird strike (gabbneb), Thursday, 29 January 2009 07:15 (seventeen years ago)

"take a bow" is one of my favorite maddy songs, but "this is how we do it" is so much its own thing.

tlc tracks are both great, coolio too. but "kiss from a rose," yikes. what a terrible song.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 29 January 2009 08:03 (seventeen years ago)

take a bow is a tasteful, tuneful babyface track about how much madonna loves herself with a vocal performance rivaling coolio's

double bird strike (gabbneb), Thursday, 29 January 2009 08:35 (seventeen years ago)

Coolio then, Coolio now, Coolio forever!

Keep The Dogs Away (Ioannis), Thursday, 29 January 2009 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

wow this is a great list. am really torn between the two TLC tracks and 'take a bow', which is my favourite madonna ballad, just so gorgeous and dignified.

did the odb remix of 'fantasy' come later, or was it released w/the original?

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 January 2009 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

For being the best song called "Waterfalls", Take That! Paul McCartney...

Mark G, Thursday, 29 January 2009 10:41 (seventeen years ago)

the face of fashion in soho square (special guest stars mark bronson), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

it's not that amazing tbh, this list.

the face of fashion in soho square (special guest stars mark bronson), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

seven (or so) out of eleven good/great tracks hitting the top of the charts in a single year is not amazing?

Keep The Dawgs Away (Ioannis), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:13 (seventeen years ago)

compared to what?

the face of fashion in soho square (special guest stars mark bronson), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:15 (seventeen years ago)

anyway, i count three okay/good tracks, not seven good/great ones.

the face of fashion in soho square (special guest stars mark bronson), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:16 (seventeen years ago)

special guest stars mark bronson otm but I aint hatin, I'm sure if I'd been rockin all this shit in the 2nd grade it would all seem like the best music of all time

this was the version used with the video at the time no?

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

I never cared much for TLC, but "Fantasy" (good), "Gangstas Paradise"(better) and "This Is How We Do It"(best!) make for a solid pool of choices.

Cripes, Creep vs crap

creep. so much.

yungblut, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, this confirms something I hinted at on the 1989 thread -- that list of #1s totalled 31; this one totals 11, just more than a third. What the hell gives? Obviously, a bunch of these must've stayed #1 for a long long time. PRetty sure I like "Exhale" best.

sw00ds, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

"Kiss From a Rose". Great song! Perhaps Seal's greatest moment.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

Waterfalls for me.

Honestly never liked "Waterfalls" much.

word, i have never felt the miniscule generation gap between myself and jordan/rev more than i do now

some dude, Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

Lotsa ballads, but in that they're not charmless. I would've voted for "Creep" or "Take a Bow" then. Now, "Exhale."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

so was one of these #1 for like 4 months or something ?

now is the time to winterize your manscape (will), Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

"Take a Bow" was Number One for seven weeks, her longest running hit. "One Sweet Day" was Number One for 16 years.

Must be a typo although it felt that way ;)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

xp: Oh, right. I was mostly refering to the production. Seal's performance is great.

Kiss from a Rose

Joe, Thursday, 29 January 2009 18:01 (seventeen years ago)

"This Is How We Do It" is the only song here I would not turn off it was on the radio. Sorry, kids. This list looks kind of like a personal hell to me.

Damn, even the TLC songs? I couldn't even imagine not liking them.

it's interesting how many of these are real vocal performances, which ended up with almost equal weight as content in my ranking

k3vin k., Friday, 30 January 2009 06:49 (seventeen years ago)

i was well past my college years at this point but even my cynical indie rocker, post-rose-colored-glasses self knew that most of these songs were good-ass pop music. i voted waterfalls but there was lots to choose from if you ask me - beats out 1992 and 2000, both of which had some great songs but i think 95 had the most cream and the least dross of the 3 (which perhaps explains why all of these songs stayed in the charts for so long?)

messiahwannabe, Friday, 30 January 2009 06:51 (seventeen years ago)

^that would be the optimist's view at least :)

im not gonna front and say that these songs were formative in my taste or anything for anything--i was 6--but for real what a year

k3vin k., Friday, 30 January 2009 07:00 (seventeen years ago)

"Gangsta's Paradise" and "This is How We Do It" are both fun but "Waterfalls" is a beautiful song and a pretty creative metaphor.

Ye Mad Puffin, Friday, 30 January 2009 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

it's easy to be creative with metaphors when you don't try to make any sense with them. "chasing waterfalls" wtf is that supposed to mean?

Don't go chasing wonderwalls. (Still don't think that TLC song is "beautiful," though. It's melody is all wet. But at least it's more stomachable than Seal.)

xhuxk, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:00 (seventeen years ago)

second is about getting fucked to death (?)

no it's AIDS isn't it ("three letters took him to his final resting place" = the three letters are "HIV")
