Blur, but I'm not happy about it.

Safe Boating is No Accident (G00blar), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:29 (seventeen years ago)

horrible. went w/ coolio.

a hoy hoy, Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:38 (seventeen years ago)

excellent. went with TT

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

this fucking country. esp in light of how great the US '95 No 1s were! really this is only between 'dreamer' and 'don't stop (wiggle wiggle)', but god, this country has such terrible taste in pop.

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

Cue Geir.

Mark G, Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

Cher, Chrissie Hynde & Neneh Cherry with Eric Clapton - "Love Can Build a Bridge"

^^^this may be the worst track all four have been involved in, which is really saying something

Mare Street tour guide (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:43 (seventeen years ago)

Nooh, I won't have that!

Eric's done much worse...

Mark G, Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

there's 5 or 6 good #1s on the US list, and 5 or 6 good #1s on this list

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

about right. half as many songs in the UK, but about the same # of 'any good's. that madonna #1 in the US - oof. did that even go top 10 here?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

half as many AGAIN i meant

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

Take A Bow is great but did strangely poorly here - #16

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

mind you, UK does have more DO NOT WANTS

rly. is boooring

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

whyen we do bad, we do REALLY FUCKING BAD. but we didn't have blando bollocks like seal and madonna shitting it up either so

the face of fashion in soho square (special guest stars mark bronson), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

there's 5 or 6 good #1s on the US list, and 5 or 6 good #1s on this list

so wrong. the US list has like 8 great trax which i would happily still jam. this has three at most.

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

^^^

Keep The Dawgs Away (Ioannis), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

Take A Bow is great but did strangely poorly here - #16

another point scored by the US, then.

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

Oh jesus, I could conceivably vote Simply Red here.

Frank Sumatra (NickB), Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:57 (seventeen years ago)

So so easy. "Some Might Say".

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 29 January 2009 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

i give 8 of these 7 or more out of 10. note - mostly without relistening.

7 Rednex - "Cotton Eye Joe"
2 Céline Dion - "Think Twice"
2 Cher, Chrissie Hynde & Neneh Cherry with Eric Clapton
7 Outhere Brothers - "Don't Stop (Wiggle Wiggle)"
10 Take That - "Back for Good"
FUCK OFF Oasis - "Some Might Say"
9 Livin' Joy - "Dreamer"
DISQUALIFIED Robson Green & Jerome Flynn
7 Outhere Brothers - "Boom Boom Boom"
10 Take That - "Never Forget"
4 Blur - "Country House"
5 Michael Jackson - "You Are Not Alone"
8 Shaggy - "Boombastic"
4 Simply Red - "Fairground"
9 Coolio featuring L.V. - "Gangsta's Paradise"
1 Robson & Jerome - "I Believe / Up on the Roof"
1 Michael Jackson - "Earth Song"

:-D

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:01 (seventeen years ago)

another point scored by the US, then.

unusual for a Madonna single to chart higher in US than in the UK after 'Erotica', so i dunno if one point will "save them" here

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:01 (seventeen years ago)

Good tracks: "Some Might Say, "Back For Good", Shaggy, Coolio, and I suppose Blur (even though it's one of their worst singles) (sorry Geir))

I don't need to hear any of the rest ever again.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

note - mostly without relistening.

this is key for me, i don't have any particular antipathy towards stuff like 'cotton eye joe' or the take that singles, but i really wouldn't want to hear them again. whereas the US list sends me scurrying to itunes to dig the best ones out again, reminds me how great they are, makes me want to relive them now.

this defence of the UK is kinda futile really!

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

So so easy. "Some Might Say".

wtf people can actually think this? or are you jesting?

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

so it would seem xp

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

i mean despite the really stiff competition, 'some might say' is still easily the most repulsive thing on this list

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

people be thinking things other than what you are thinking.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

jeez, you guys like Take That that much?

xp's

Keep The Dawgs Away (Ioannis), Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

I'm completely serious. Probably their best single, and the only time I thought they might actually be worth their hype (then "What's the Story Morning Glory?" was released and I realized they weren't.)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

liked the b-side 'Acquiese' more

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

wtf were you listening to oasis b-sides for

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

WORK IT OUT

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, that song was another reason for the "believing the hype" feeling I had at the time.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

I've realised over the years that I really like "Earth Song". Don't think I'll take it over "Dreamer" or "Boombastic" or maybe even "Back for Good" tho. Or "Fairground" even, as long as I can put the video out of my head.

Coolio by a furlong.

"Country House" is perhaps the best single of the entire 90s.

Livin' Joy - "Dreamer" by a fucking mile.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

Of the ones I've heard (which is most), easily Rednex. Doubt anybody could beat them, though I should check out Take That someday.

xhuxk, Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

Cotton Eye Joe.

Outhere Bros was always good to hear out too.

i don't know if britain has *bad* taste, but it's certainly schizophrenic. i mean, it likes robson & jerome AND 'dreamer' AND 'some might say'. what a fucked-up country.

the face of fashion in soho square (special guest stars mark bronson), Thursday, 29 January 2009 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

because obviously the sales of recorded music from more than a decade ago are a really telling indicator of just what a racist, intolerant place this is.

the face of fashion in soho square (special guest stars mark bronson), Thursday, 29 January 2009 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

the last great oasis single

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 January 2009 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

'Boombastic' by a short head from 'Dreamer'.

back for good ftw

talk me down off the (ledge), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 09:54 (seventeen years ago)

Some of these charts...they have no cohesion. I think that is what is distasteful here. I'm not saying the charts have to all have the same style, but normally when you look at an old chart (say - 1960s-80s), you have a sense of what is going on that year.

u s steel, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 09:58 (seventeen years ago)

That said, I'm tempted to vote for "Cotton Eyed Joe", even though I haven't heard it in about twelve years. At least it is an historical marker of some sort.

u s steel, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 10:01 (seventeen years ago)

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 10:59 (seventeen years ago)

"Drum" being an advisable term.

they're both shit.

do not get the coolio love at all.

special guest stars mark bronson, Thursday, 5 February 2009 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

you are not alone is garbage that doesn't ask about elephants

coolio track is pretty boring but like his lyrics

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

in a lolrap way or for actual?

special guest stars mark bronson, Thursday, 5 February 2009 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

coolios best (maybe only good?) single was fantastic voyage.

p-noid (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 5 February 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

I don't get how "Gangsta's Paradise" is "lolrap". Certifiable classic.

The Reverend (rev), Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

im probably being a bit unfair, but basically 15-y-o english indie me (im white btw) felt it wasn't 'real' coz it was promoting a michelle pfeiffer movie, lacked swearing and other gangsta signifiers, that sort of thing. still think it's kinda a sluggish beat tbh.

special guest stars mark bronson, Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

It's a MAMMOTH beat. "Gangsta's Paradise" is the "What You Know" of the 90's!

The Reverend (rev), Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

of roughly contemporary tracks, 'i got five on it' is a more mammoth-y beat.

special guest stars mark bronson, Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

Really? "5 On It" has always sounded kinda small (or maybe just constrained?) to me.

The Reverend (rev), Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

'1st Of Da Month' is always slower than I remember

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

lol i just prefer 'i got five on it' is all.

special guest stars mark bronson, Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

five (5)

special guest stars mark bronson, Thursday, 5 February 2009 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

I liked "I Got Five On It" more as "Why You Treat Me So Bad?"

nosotros niggamos (HI DERE), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

Loved "I Got 5 On It" as a, what, 14-year-old but the remix of it is so much better.

Limoncello Carlin (The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I prefer "Why You Treat Me So Bad?" too.

The Reverend (rev), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

"1st of the Month" is the best song mentioned in this thread.

The Reverend (rev), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

'I Got 5 On It' has that organ bass note progression like going down 4 steps and then back up again over the course of 8 bars. maybe 'Gangsta's Paradise' could've used something like that instead of the same less fun (this is also key in that GP isn't a fun rap track at all) bass pattern over only 2 bars.

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

^^ droppin musicology
