Just to complete it ;)

(and also because these are, largely, completely different songs from the UK and US chart toppers in this case)

trying to think of something funny to say about the fact that there are THREE rednex singles

"lol country-Rednex-are-from"

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

surely 'there are three rednex singles' is funny enough.

The Connels are gonna walk this, aren't they?

Hoes Cartwright (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

I know it's not cool but I might just vote for The Connells, love its smoky Al Stewart vibe.

Shallow Gravy (Billy Dods), Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

Re Rednex, I believe Norway is the only country where they had three chart toppers.

Of course "Wish You Were Here" is part of history now, in that it was the first hit ever written by Max Martin.

Scatman landslide

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, why are they called "The Murmurs America" here? In the US, they were just "The Murmurs." Was there a Norwegian band by the same name?

Anyway, this song got a bit of play on college radio, and quite a lot of play on MTV as I recall:

THREE Rednex #1s in one year?? I'd totally move there, if I didn't hate cold weather. I like all three, too (whole album was good, and so was their followup), but still have to go with "Cotton Eye."

xhuxk, Thursday, 29 January 2009 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

(Thought Scatman's album was fun at the time too, fwiw. Could live without the U2 though.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 29 January 2009 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

coolio

I hope that somewhere back in the alt.music.alternative archives there are some quality posts featuring Geir getting very angry indeed about the Rednex's strangehold on the Norwegian charts.

There aren't many songs in the poll, some of these must have sat at the top for ages.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I believe I did my usenet debut in November 1995. :)

Didn't Butt-head tell Beavis, apropos the Murmurs, "Hey, they're singing a song for you"?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 2 February 2009 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

If that's Pancakes' YouTube embed, sorry.
