Danger (Been So Long)

jordy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 January 2009 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

i have vivid memories of washing dishes at my first job in '98 and the kid i worked with blasting "That's The Nigga" (aka the clean edit "That's The Rapper") and rapping along all the time, gotta give that the nostalgic vote.

some dude, Thursday, 29 January 2009 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

bouncin' back

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 29 January 2009 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

a while back i thought about doing a Mystikal poll that was just No Limit era vs. Neptunes/post-No Limit era but i guess this works just as good

and what, Thursday, 29 January 2009 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

my fave memory of 'bouncin' back' is seeing the Soul Rebels Brass Band for the first time (in '02) and the dj dropped it right as they finished their set, it was perfect.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

One time when I was a teenager my dad was driving me somewhere in his truck and "Shake Ya Ass" came on the radio. Every time the words "Shake Ya Ass" appeared, my dad would reach over and shake me, until I finally did it back to him. Both of us were dying of laughter.

The Reverend (rev), Thursday, 29 January 2009 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

lol.

also bouncin' back has a fake second line in the video.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

Remember when music critics totally overplayed this "He sounds like James Brown!" angle?

The Reverend (rev), Thursday, 29 January 2009 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

I think throughout the 80s and 90s the media just got used to constantly propping someone up as the next JB and having them perform with him at some awards show -- Michael Jackson, Hammer, Usher, etc.

some dude, Thursday, 29 January 2009 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

well he does sound exactly like james brown!

Shit, how'd I miss this? Would have voted for "Bouncin' Back" w/ "Danger" as my #2 so I guess it's fine.

"Bouncin' Back" is one of the great singles of the decade, IMO - kind of weird and off-kilter and not exactly a song that's touched my heart but the beat is just so great, still startles me to this day, so EMPTY in this way like some of the tracks got deleted at the last minute. And then you have this rap which covers all this great angry, paranoid ground that just happened to line up really well with 9/11 and so on ("Stuck inside, scared, watchin' C-N-N! [...] Tell my friends to call 'cause I ain't acCEPtin' no letters!") etc.

I knew one guy who thought the hook was:

'Til you seen me,
You ain't seen Bounce Attack

and another who thought it was

'Til you seen me,
You ain't seen Busta rap

(The latter thought this song was by Busta Rhymes, which would make this version kind of brilliant.)

This was a rarely OTM poll result but it always disappoints me that "Oooh Yeah" wasn't a single.

Tim F, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 22:00 (sixteen years ago)

I would've voted for Danger.

chap, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

this poll woulda been way more fun w/ guest verses and collabs, "Neck Uv Da Woodz"/"Stutter"/"Move"/"I Don't Give A Fuck" was a pretty incredible run.

has there ever been a rapper with as many or more hit singles that had as unique/weird of a rapping style?

waka shame (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 24 January 2010 05:54 (sixteen years ago)

the last two verses of "danger" are closer to slam poetry (no hooso) than rap

waka shame (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 24 January 2010 05:55 (sixteen years ago)

Eminem's style seemed pretty weird and unique when he first came out.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Sunday, 24 January 2010 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

I am really ignorant of post-breakdance era hip hop. But "Danger" and whichever one where he says "watch yourself!" a whole lot really caught my ear when they came out.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 24 January 2010 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

damn, tarantula (the album) is really amazing. why isn't this in southern 00s rap canon alongside like, trap muzik & stankonia?

waka shame (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

ha, proto-letz talk abt gucci mane in the middle of this thread This is the thread where you can talk about Mystikal

waka shame (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

for starters, it was kind of a flop compared to his previous albums. haven't heard it, but i love Let's Get Ready. (xpost)

^^^ Definitely. Only realised this when putting together a top 100 albums of the 00s list and thought "this must be on there!!"

Tim F, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

i keep meaning to go through the albums, but this might be my favorite hits comp ever:
