Lanegan one of all-time faves so him

Stylez G. White (Stormy Davis), Friday, 30 January 2009 06:26 (seventeen years ago)

MIRV Griffin (goole), Friday, 30 January 2009 06:47 (seventeen years ago)

It's weird how much I like the two of the singers most influenced by Morrison--Iggy and Laengan--but I can't stand the Doors.

thirdalternative, Friday, 30 January 2009 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

otm

Gukbe, Friday, 30 January 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

Haven't cared about Lanegan since Screaming Trees' Even If And Especially When in 1987. Still care about Morrison, to some extent, despite his blowhardiness. And he had a much better band. So him.

xhuxk, Friday, 30 January 2009 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

I will defend the Doors 'til the day I die.

QuantumNoise, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

Lanegan

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 30 January 2009 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

Tough. Not a huge Doors fan, was a huge Trees fan but not so much on Lanegan's solo stuff, and I beg to differ... a better band. I've had the opp to work with both Mark & Van, and Van's very gifted.

Mark's voice through a tube pre-amp, soloed up, is a deep dark valley w/much sonic space to explore. Of course so is Calvin Johnson's, but that''s a different argument.

Lanegan was a whiskey and Marlborough man, so I wonder what Morrison smoked, and is there's a textural difference between the Marlborough-men and the Camel-heads.

I'll also toss Kim Salmon's hat in the ring (Jameson, no smokes though).

factcheckr, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

Morrison smoked life itself.

QuantumNoise, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

Jim Morrison: JD & Marlboroughs. (Doors messageboard)

willem, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

Was just thinking about how perfect the Strange Days LP is, so Morrison.

Soukesian, Friday, 30 January 2009 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

Agreed. I think Strange Days is a stronger album than the debut, in part because it contains the better closing epic: "When the Music's Over."

QuantumNoise, Friday, 30 January 2009 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

also doesn't contain any filler tracks like "Take It As It Comes"

Am I the only one who sees this?

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Friday, 30 January 2009 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

Lanegan all the way

Wally West, Friday, 30 January 2009 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

Lanegan needs to go with either longhair or the super-short look. That middle-of-the-road thing is just no good.

QuantumNoise, Friday, 30 January 2009 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

Mark's least successful songs are the ones where he comes closest to outright aping Morrison's style, but it seems like he (mostly) got over his Doors obsession by the early '90s. I can't think of anything on his solo albums that's as blatantly Doorsy as stuff like "Before We Arise" and "Closer" from Uncle Anesthesia, at any rate. Tim Hardin seems like a much more obvious inspiration for Mark's rootsier work, although vocally the two aren't all that similar.

Lately I think Mark's been going for a Roger B. Taney look. Surely I'm not the only one who sees this:

Bless them both. What a lovely pair of singers they make.

ilxor, Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

I'll vote against Jim Morrison in ANY showdown.

Katy Perry v. Jim Morrison? Perry FTW.

Jim Morrison v. Leonard Nimoy? Beam me up.

etc.

I can remember more Morrison tunes off the top of my head, but Lanegan grips me more. Yet, I admit, I can only recall a handful of tunes, but maybe that's because my brain stopped absorbing things correctly sometime out of adolescence while everything I heard when I was 14 -- good and bad -- is stuck, stuck stuck...and won't leave...

smurfherder, Monday, 2 February 2009 06:02 (seventeen years ago)

Lanegan isn't a joke, so him. By a LOOOOOOOOOOONG way.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 2 February 2009 12:11 (seventeen years ago)

Hellboy looks more like Tom Waits to me.

Marco Damiani, Monday, 2 February 2009 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

Put the three of them together. Must be related.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 2 February 2009 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

Mark Lanegan looks like Will Ferrell's evil brother.

thirdalternative, Monday, 2 February 2009 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

Lanegan's flavor saver looks a little off in that more recent pic.

Lowell N. Behold'n, Monday, 2 February 2009 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

xpost: Can't find it right now, but there is a picture of Waits with a pair of welders goggles pushed up onto his forehead that HAS to be the inspiration for Hellboy.

Bozo Dionysus forever!

Wonder what Morrison would've made of Bangs' essay. Anyway, yeah: "I see the bathroom is clear," etc.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 5 February 2009 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

Close enough?
