Artists crying out for bootlegging

Having downloaded a track bootlegging The Streets and Electrelane today, it made me wonder why some artists have yet to be dragged aboard the splicey bandwagon. Cat Power, for instance, strikes me as one that is pretty obvious, as is Neko Case. 2Unlimited, perhaps, or Sinitta. The possibilities are endless and smashing...

Three factors - 1) Availability: it's profoundly easier to make a bootleg of something if there are pre-existing instrumental and/or a cappella versions of it out there. 2) Malleability: Certain artists/songs lend themselves to being bootlegged a lot more than others. One key to a good bootleg is seamlessness, and if you try to throw Chan Marshall vocals on top of an Outkast instrumental track (east Atlanta vs. south Atlanta), odds are it ain't gonna work. Sometime disjointedness can work in the bootlegs' favor - eg. the "I Will Always Love You" segment of "Intro Inspection". 3) Likeability: Bootleggers don't really listen to indierock.

I dunno about the no-indie rule - I mean, 2 Many DJs had stuff like Peaches on it, and that's pretty indie. Also it's easier to clear rights for indie than big stars, esp. if bootlegs continue to rise in popularity. However bootlegs seem to work better with harder edged, more beat-heavy or riff-heavy stuff that can hold itself up well in a mix - I don't think stuff like Cat Power would work for the same reasons jblount sez - also it would not be funny (I think). Neko Case I have not heard much from so I dunno. For me there is greater joy in listening to a bootleg if I know at least one of the songs in the remix, and if it's kind of jokey and danceable.

Clearing rights is not an issue; I really doubt Freelance Hellraiser (or Freelance Hairdresser for that matter) has a lawyer. A Cat Power bootleg would be really funny, if only because it would horrify so many of her fans.

eminem was obviously gagging for it...

Clearing rights is an issue, especially if you are intending mass release of your bootleg album. On 2 Many DJs, all rights did have to get cleared for each song used. Soulwax was not permitted to use Lou Reed's "Vicious" in a mix, for instance, because they couldn't get permission for it, but they did manage to get permission for VU's "I'm Waiting for the Man" because of the difference in how the rights are held for VU tracks vs Lou Reed tracks.

I'm waiting for someone to drop an uptempo hip-hop accapella (a'la "Without Me" or "Follow the Leader") on top of the theme from Bullitt.

this is me being lazy. anyone have a link to where i can get 2 many DJ's on vinyl?

My bad - I didn't know the 2 Many DJs cd was legit. Still, bootlegs are so far, as the name implies, primarily an illicit practice which is a big part of its charm. In many ways it's a throwback to sampling pre-Gilbert O'Sullivan vs. Biz Markie (which is a good idea for a bootleg, a hipper Dave Barry might say). The Avalanches mix of Madonna's "Holiday" and Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" would've been a (the) highlight of Since I Left You if it'd been released in 1989; in 2001, "Holiday" alone barely squeaks in, and sets a precedent doing so. As Deconstructing Beck somewhat heavyhandedly showed, sampling has become the reserve of those with a lot of money and lawyers. In this sense, bootlegging is revolutionary. Certainly more so than the blowhard culture jamming movement it's distantly related to. It's definitely more fun.

Spin once had some video of Chan doing karoke to Eminem.

I was told by the guy in the shop where I bought it that 2 Many DJs wasn't released on vinyl.

Why is Blue Monday called The Beach on 2 Many DJs?

Why isn't Billie Jean credited?

Does this mean Soulwax will be found out and have their Belgian asses sued?

Ronan, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1) "The Beach" is the instrumental b-side to "Blue Monday".

2) I think Soulwax sampled another record which sampled "Billie Jean" b/c it was easier to clear the rights.

Culture jamming="Let's cut up and detonate a bunch of Beck songs because we hate him and he's a rich bastard"
Bootlegging="Let's take the accapella of "Mixed Bizness" and lay it on top of a sped-up instro of AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" because it'd be a cool record*"

(*It is, you know)

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Louis Prima, especially when his vocals tend towards scat, might work beautifully with some modern house.

Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I already mentioned this on another thread. By sampling a record that used the original Billie Jean song, they don't get into legal hassles. So the rights are really cleared. If they get approached by lawyers, they simply shove the papers in the other guy's hands.
And it's 2Many DJs or Fucking DeWaele Bros. Soulwax is just the shitty band they play trashy guitar rock with.
They do mention the NewOrder sample on their website.

I know this is a cheap shot but; Metallica.

David Beckhouse, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does DJ Shadow's "The Number Song" count?

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen a few bootlegs that use "Enter Sandman" in some fashion, though I've yet to download any of them (because they use "Enter Sandman" in some fashion).

J Blount, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I shouldn't imagine it'd be difficult to get stuff off the Covers Album for Cat Power.

Failing that, her session version of Wonderwall would work rather well. I'm currently thinking it'd go alright over the backing of Beautiful Stranger...

Mr Swygart, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Enter The Bitch" (Missy vs Metallica) is a ker-lassic.

I've been pissing around with bootlegging on my PC. One that needs doing is "i Know You Got Soul" vs "Groovejet", as it works perfectly. I'd do it, if I didn't have a Pentium 1...

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I remain convinced that there is some way to graft the accapella to "Follow the Leader" onto "Block Rockin' Beats" even though my limited farting around in Goldwave may have proven otherwise. But come on, it's got the perfect title potential and everything ("Block Rakim Beats")!

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just did the Streets and TLC over Yellow by Coldplay. I've not heard of another bootleg using COldplay and to be honest it does sound a little indie...
