It's between "Killing Yorself to Live", "Looking for Today" and "Spiral Architect" for me. I can't choose! This is such a good album.

Pashmina, Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

this album is SO good. I hear it, even more than Vol. 4, as Sabbath's big bid for "legitimacy" - multi-part song structures, really different riffs from Iommi, just a real moment of growth for them as a band I feel. the opening number is so classic! but "Spiral Architect" is so cool.

listening to album to see where my vote actually is at 'cause it's a hard call.

Can't remember if this was my first Sabbath album or Live Evil but either way it storms. Voting for "Spiral Architect". Or maybe "Killing Yourself". I'm gonna go think about it.

title track. loads of good songs tho. art-rock Sabbath. CM to thread.

subatomic dawg (Ioannis), Saturday, 31 January 2009 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

check out the 'video' of the title track - Sabbath and dogs lost in the woods.

calstars, Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

When I first got it I just listened to the title track over and over for like a week and didn't even get to the others until much later. So that one.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

Title track, for the line "bog blast all of you" if nothing else. No duds on this one though. Shame they didn't really follow up the Moog approach after "Who Are You".

Matt #2, Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

immediate impulse was spiral architect, as i expect most votes will go to the title tack & killing yerself.

ian, Saturday, 31 January 2009 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

it's between "Looking For Today" and "Spiral Architect". Tending toward the latter.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Sunday, 1 February 2009 02:09 (seventeen years ago)

obv the lead track can't be touched

guess I'm the only one repping for "a national acrobat"? I don't know why I love that song so much. sabbath at their most resplendent, pompous + regal.

Edward III, Sunday, 1 February 2009 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

I like to wear a little crown when I listen to it

This album always kicked off one-two for me. The two always one-upping the one. A National Acrobat is pretty quintessential Sabbath. It really evokes the best qualities of the band - riff, plod and swagger. Add some hazy drug vibe, too. So serpentine.

Brooker Buckingham, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

In a band that was all about the huge cromagnon riff, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is real close to the top. Iommi did so many of those killer yet catchy power chord riffs, you cannot start messing with them without sounding like Sabbath.

Killing Yourself to Live is to Sabbath what That Smell is to Skynrd or Mr. Brownstone is to GnRs, a big riff orgy on getting screwed up and knowing your going down, which is always a great subject for rock and roll.

You really cannot fault much on the original Sabbath until their last two albums and even then they still have some good parts.

earlnash, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 05:04 (seventeen years ago)

"Killing Yourself To Live" has got the massive riff, the blues-prog changeups, and "Little Boy Blue's a big girl now", as weird a line as "Fairy boots are dancing with a dwarf".

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 06:47 (seventeen years ago)

title track!

Arghn, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

This one is damn near impossible, because this album is so consistently awesome front to back. I voted Spiral Architect, but almost went with Killing Yourself...

one year passes...

man, this album rules so hard

original bgm, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

"sabbath bloody sabbath," "a national acrobat," "killing yourself to live," "spiral architect" - all top-tier sabbath, imo

original bgm, Friday, 2 April 2010 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

Friggin' genius. I could play this thing on a continuous loop for a week and not get sick of it.

Bill Magill, Friday, 2 April 2010 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

It's my least fave of the original run of 6.

Stormy Davis, Friday, 2 April 2010 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

amazing record. so lame that the early Sabbath vinyl reissues are so overpriced

Kaleidoscope Funk Network (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 2 April 2010 19:04 (sixteen years ago)

It's my least fave of the original run of 6.

man, I love this album so much... but the original run of 6 is so great, that I can still where you're coming from w/that.

"killing yourself to live" has gotta be me fave. chorus is MASSIVELY heavy. solo rules. blues jam outro swings hard. also -

"SMOKE IT....... GET HIGH"

only thing about it that I don't like is that "who are you?" comes on when it ends.

original bgm, Friday, 2 April 2010 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

i cant really comment on that since i havent had a record player since 1986.

"man, I love this album so much... but the original run of 6 is so great, that I can still where you're coming from w/that."

My least favorite of those 6 (but its relative cuz I love them all) is Paranoid, probably just due to a ton of exposure of those songs.

Bill Magill, Friday, 2 April 2010 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah it's relative. They are all great. I just don't think the highs of SBS match the highs on the others. "Spiral Architect" is wicked tho

Stormy Davis, Friday, 2 April 2010 19:11 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, my least fave is probably paranoid for the same reasons.

but obviously, it also rules.

and I like the black box that got released a while ago. thought rhino did a good job with that one. that's what I play these days.

only thing about it is the dumb quotes from other bands peppered across the big booklet that comes w/the box. like sabbath really need a back-handed compliment from billy joe of green day to validate em. AS IF.

I had the most busted cd copy of master of reality growing up. I think I bought it for like $2 and the mastering job sure sounded like it.

For some reason the phrase "best number" has me imagining Murry Wilson starting this thread.

four years pass...

i would love to hear a defense of 'fluff' from one of its two voters

the part in the title track where the fuzz bass first comes in is sick as shit. one of ozzy's most uncanny vocals, that slide up the scale.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath -> Killing Yourself to Live -> A National Acrobat -> Spiral Architect -> Who Are You? -----> Looking for Today -> Sabbra Cadabra -> Fluff

dominance and transmission (Matt #2), Saturday, 6 June 2020 12:02 (five years ago)

Weird that "Who Are You" is the only track to get zero votes, especially when judged against "Fluff" and "Sabra Cadabra" (and "Living For Today," which I love, but it's clearly second tier Sab). "Who Are You" is great! I may prefer it to the overrated-in-this-thread "Killing Yourself To Live," though I agree this is an album without a weak track so it's all relative. Have we ever polled the first 6 albums?

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 6 June 2020 16:10 (five years ago)
