Outside of hip hop, have their been any two artists that have given us a bit of the ol' Jay-Z/Nas style back and forth dissing in songs? Has to have gone on for at least three songs. I'm sure the Tori hates Trent hates Marilyn hates Courtney hates Dave hates Fred hates blah blah axis must have managed it...

calypso, a hip-hop forerunner, had/has this in spades: many calypsonians feuded w/each other CONSTANTLY. part of the act etc.

early reggae deejays as well--cf. Prince Jazzbo's "Gal Boy I Roy"

John Lennon vs. Paul McCartney: "How Do You Sleep" vs. "Dear Friend"; cover of Ram made fun of on Imagine insert

Didn't you invert those, Michaelangelo? Insert of Imagine made fun of Ram cover (w/ Lennon & pig.)

Sex Pistols vs. (I think) New York Dolls. Johnny Thunders wrote a song called "London Boys" in response to the Pistols' "New York".

Lyrics here. It's one of the most vitriolic "response" records from the rock canon I've heard.

And it appears on an album featuring guest appearances by Steve Jones and Paul Cook, which weirds things up even more.

Pink doesn't diss Britney. She disses stupid record company execs who try to market her (/her character in the song) as another Britney. Unless you think the "She's so pretty" line is intended as sarcasm.
