50 - Flo Rida - Low
69.5 points, 7 votes
100 in P&J

Thoughts?

miss precious perfect (musically), Monday, 2 February 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

btw I am very happy that the 50th place track got 7 votes. IIRC for the 2006 poll the 50th place only received 2 votes.

miss precious perfect (musically), Monday, 2 February 2009 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

it begins

k3vin k., Monday, 2 February 2009 17:56 (sixteen years ago)

The one time I have fogiven Flo Rida his name.

Gukbe, Monday, 2 February 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

good title, good start

lex pretend, Monday, 2 February 2009 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

i already wish i could totally redo my list, but it was ordered anyway so the ones i would cut i didnt give much weight to anyway

k3vin k., Monday, 2 February 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

i forgot to do traxx tho

xp agree with lex on title

k3vin k., Monday, 2 February 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

^high heresy!

(a mess0 (Ioannis), Monday, 2 February 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

i like "low" fine, but i was already sick of it at the beginning of '08, nevermind the end.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Monday, 2 February 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

musically, you are a wonder for this. shame I gave up on the rap one, but the autogoons didn't want it in the first place.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 2 February 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I can imagine that for more niche polls that getting enough participation to make it worthwhile might be difficult.

miss precious perfect (musically), Monday, 2 February 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

one of my least fav t-pain productions ever - flo-rida's voice is crazy annoying and the flow he locks into is so ugh

jordy (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 February 2009 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

^^this

k3vin k., Monday, 2 February 2009 20:00 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think T-Pain produced that one, but yeah, not one of my favorite hits of his, although I liked it a bit at first.

some dude, Monday, 2 February 2009 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

yeah you're right, but i meant least favorite songs involving t-pain anyway. beat and stuff is actually aaaight

jordy (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 February 2009 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

I liked it enough to give it a vote. It's got an excellent intro, leaping all over the place thanks to my fancy new speakers. I can see what might be annoying about the delivery, but still a cracking pop tune nonetheless

Ismael Klata, Monday, 2 February 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

70 points, 5 votes, 1 #1 vote

No Excuses is just about the fizziest, trembliest, most joyful thing I've heard, smeary piano and cascading string riffs swirling around like ambient happy hardcore. ― Tim F

miss precious perfect (musically), Monday, 2 February 2009 20:36 (sixteen years ago)

obsessed with this song

jordy (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 February 2009 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

Something I'll have to listen to when I get home

The Reverend (rev), Monday, 2 February 2009 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

Less than forty seconds in, and already I wish I'd heard it in time

Ismael Klata, Monday, 2 February 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

yeah for some reason when i first heard that air france ep i didnt get into that much but just recently i've had it continuously on repeat. soooo nice

thirded! how did i miss this?

Gukbe, Monday, 2 February 2009 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

Seriously, what a fabulous record. The section from 0:20 onwards is just euphoric. I'm playing it over and over in the dark in the depths of winter, with a beautiful warm feeling and a big summery grin on my face.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 2 February 2009 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

maybe i should go back to the air france ep but i was really hyped about hearing it at the time, and just didn't feel it in the slightest :(

lex pretend, Monday, 2 February 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

That song would be better without the vocal bit, which is kinda bland and the tune doesn't really need it.

Tuomas, Monday, 2 February 2009 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

But quite nice otherwise.

Tuomas, Monday, 2 February 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)

just gave that EP another listen the other night, if I'd spent more time with it it would have placed in my list.

sleeve, Monday, 2 February 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

btw thanks for all your work Musically

sleeve, Monday, 2 February 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

The mood here (especially video, but also the music) reminds me a bit of 'Star Guitar' by the Chemical Brothers. The Chemicals' video is something else, but 'No Excuses' is by far the better tune

Ismael Klata, Monday, 2 February 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

49 - Air France - No Excuses

^would have voted for this if i did traxx. glad to see it place, my fav song of theirs

k3vin k., Monday, 2 February 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

No.48's pleasant enough (both versions), if a little dull. I just don't like that kind of treatment on the vocal either, singers should put themselves out there properly

Ismael Klata, Monday, 2 February 2009 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

until we bleed raised my expectations too high for the lykke li album.

Gukbe, Monday, 2 February 2009 22:44 (sixteen years ago)

47 - Kelley Polar - Entropy Reigns (In The Celestial City)
74 points, 7 votes
739 in P&J, 43 in p4k

i like the vocals on 'Entropy' with the duet dynamic (a bit Human League perhaps), and the "heroin, cocaaaine" line keeps getting stuck in my head

miss precious perfect (musically), Monday, 2 February 2009 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

I like this, but I like "Roseband" a bit better.

Maciej (maciej recognizing trill), Monday, 2 February 2009 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

I agree. Also, I would have voted for 3 A.M. from the Kleerup album if it had been option. Why I didn't nominate is beyond me.

A+ last two tracks, big ups!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

i stupidly left "poison dart" off my p&j list, so i was glad i got to vote for it here. (don't quite love that album like some do, but i do love that track.)

45 - Katy Perry - Hot N Cold
76 points, 7 votes
38 in P&J

Ten weeks on now, and this'll probably be up the business end of the charts for a little while yet. Heard it out last night, and the distinctly less-than-subtle boshing suggests it'll be a fixture on the mobile discos for some time to come.
-William Bloody Swygart

Hot N Cold has probably the best chorus I've heard this year.
― Matt Armstrong

miss precious perfect (musically), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 01:12 (sixteen years ago)

i hate how the chorus of that never takes off and i suspect it's cuz she can't really sing. i can remember the chorus even tho i've avoided it which i think says something but it's a very unsatisfying song imo

your infinity in you is mad lifted (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 01:16 (sixteen years ago)

first dud for me. my flatmate swears by it, but i got tired of it really fast. perhaps i was so disturbed by the bigotry of her previous singles that i've become a katie perry bigot myself. ooh, what a tangled web...

Gukbe, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 01:19 (sixteen years ago)

damn I placed Entropy Reigns much higher, like top 5.

1. Musically: huge, huge respect.

2. Anyone who said anything even remotely like "wau wau wau why can't everyone like the same music as me s'not fair" and has failed to appreciate that ILM is a broad church of sometimes impressively diverse opinion: respect withdrawn, at least temporarily.

eight points from me for "I Hate This Part". hopefully i'm gonna go see them live in a few weeks time!

they are GREAT live. nicole is a force of nature.

i definitely voted for "Look Back At Me," was really happy to see it got nominated

it was ages before i realised it was basically trina's 'a milli' - not consciously i don't think, but they work in exactly the same way, a sparse beat which is barely there and totally extra at the same time, which just magnifies trina/wayne spitting o_0 weirdness.

lex pretend, Saturday, 7 February 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

also regretting not voting for brandy's '1st & love' now

lex pretend, Saturday, 7 February 2009 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

the friendly fires aeroplane remix was a great recent revelation which i may well have voted for had i heard it in time - avoided it as hated the original but it's SO GOOOOD

lex pretend, Saturday, 7 February 2009 21:15 (sixteen years ago)

yeah luckily it's nothing like the original at all.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 7 February 2009 21:15 (sixteen years ago)

exactly. it really should have been voted as a separate track. best find due to this poll for me by far.

fhuck crank (Ioannis), Saturday, 7 February 2009 21:21 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i had not even heard of that track before this thread, and when i listened to it, i jsut thought "hm this is like a slightly above-average DFA track". then i found out it actually was a slightly above average (imo) DFA track. apparently there was more to/of the song though?

Yes, the whole song is 13 minutes long and has a couple whole distinct movements to it that aren't in the youtube video. If it didn't have those other parts it would just be a really good DFA track, but with them it is WAU.

Actually, no: there was one interesting bit towards the end when the bass got slightly evil. But, y'know, that still left 11'30" of tedium.

Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Saturday, 7 February 2009 22:14 (sixteen years ago)

I truly think most of Juan's debut album is better than "Happy House," which is nice but in no way exceptional or terrific.

ilxor, Saturday, 7 February 2009 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

I'd also take three or four songs on the Hercules album before I'd pick "Blind" as the go-to track. But that's Internet era consensus for you...

Listening to "Disturbia" now - had heard it 2-3 times before but now actually paying attention. It's pretty damn good except for the TITLE - "Disturbia"? It's just a corny word, and aligns badly with the the Marilyn Manson "gothy fast-motion spaz out" video imagery.

So, I just now on Youtube loaded the "Disturbia" video in one tab with the sound turned down, and Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People" in another tab with the sound turned up. It works really really well on the Rihanna vid - the lipsynching is maybe a little tighter when you do the opposite setup, but the moments when Rihanna and her dancers spazz out in time with Manson's guitars are just bliss.

two years pass...

2008 = worst year for singles that has ever existed.

I stand by this as well.

eight years pass...

I was the #1 for Ida Maria. I can see myself still listening to that song in 10 years.

Eleven and change as it turns out.

Didn't remember this landing at #26, ahead of Alphabeat's "Fascination" at #27. That's as strong a one-two punch for a ballot of mine for as long as I've been voting in these.
