HOLIDAY

lou, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

amazing album.

p-noid (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

Her most consistent album until Erotica. Voted for the "Burning Up" 12" (cheating, I know).

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

holiday was the 2nd madonna song i ever really loved. the 1st was material girl, of course.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, "Material Girl" was the first for me too. I will never forget listening to it in the backseat of my mom's car and then seeing that video on MTV.

lou, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 14:46 (sixteen years ago)

"Holiday" was the song for me, hit radio like that and it was kinda all over. The troika of that, "Borderline" and "Lucky Star" really was a perfect mainstream career introduction and then we all know what happened with the album after that.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

"Borderline", then "Lucky Star", then "Burnin' Up", "then "Holiday"

This is a fucking excellent album, I should get my copy of this back from my parents' house.

nosotros niggamos (HI DERE), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

I found a tape of this in storage a few weeks back. It really is solid all the way through.

lou, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

"Borderline" will always be #1 with me

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

from the very first note

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

"Borderline" > "Holiday" > "Lucky Star"

Ye Mad Puffin, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

Between "Holiday" and "Lucky Star" here. Went for "Holiday" in the long run.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 18:59 (sixteen years ago)

And, actually, how consistent it this? I think you will see most people going for one of the three hits here. Then, I will give some props to "Think Of Me" too. Those are all amazing, but it doesn't hold up one hundred per cent as an album. I will rank the next three all well behind this. Plus also several of her electro albums from "Ray Of Light" onwards.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

I will rank the next three all well behind ahead of this, I mean.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

I don't remember "I Know It" or "Think of Me" because my copy of this is on vinyl at my parents' house. I remember every other song and think they're all fantastic, and I remember buying this, Like A Virgin and True Blue all at the same time and loving this one and TB to death and really, really hating the non-singles on LAV.

nosotros niggamos (HI DERE), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

SHOO-BE-DO-BE DO OOH MY LOVE

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

haha. i actually love the non-singles on LAV, just cuz they're so fluffy, dense and silly.

I Know It is pretty amazing

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

This is definitely an amazing album - I'll vote for "Holiday" but I'd like to give abig warm shout out to "Everybody"

baaderonixx, Thursday, 5 February 2009 09:23 (sixteen years ago)

I think the Lucky Star 12" version pretty much beats everything else on this album (is that the same as the "New Mix"? I honestly don't know...I tend to think if it's a long version of Lucky Star, we're going in the right direction) , but there are a couple of really good ones on this besides that and it's the only Madonna album I give a shit about. I'd give it a 7/10. "Burning Up" is probably even better than "Borderline", in the end.

Ozzy Goth Beatles (Bimble), Friday, 6 February 2009 05:07 (sixteen years ago)

Voted "Everybody."

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Friday, 6 February 2009 06:40 (sixteen years ago)

you've stumped me, ramz

charles bronson reilly (donna rouge), Friday, 6 February 2009 06:51 (sixteen years ago)

"lucky star" because i was a rock kid obliged to hate madonna on principle but i was also a 14-year-old boy and i actually remember the first time i saw the video:

it wasn't til "material girl" that i admitted to any friends that i liked a madonna song, but "lucky star" was the turning point.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 6 February 2009 06:53 (sixteen years ago)

i love that she wrote lucky star.

Surmounter, Friday, 6 February 2009 07:57 (sixteen years ago)

I'm telling you, every self-respecting vinyl DJ should own that fucking 12".

Ozzy Goth Beatles (Bimble), Friday, 6 February 2009 08:41 (sixteen years ago)

I refused to vote for the 12" versions here as I feel extra tracks don't belong on the actual album. That said, the extra tracks on this CD and the "Like a Virgin" remaster are all great extended versions. I am particularly fond of the "Like a Virgin" 12 incher.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 February 2009 11:38 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 9 February 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

Is this worth a spin as a lover of 'Holiday' and an aspiring poptimist?

davek_00, Monday, 9 February 2009 00:04 (sixteen years ago)

It's worth more than a spin.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 February 2009 00:06 (sixteen years ago)

much, much more.

Surmounter, Monday, 9 February 2009 00:11 (sixteen years ago)

Would have definitely said Borderline until really recently, and its still what I voted for, but this video sways me somewhat somehow

Plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 9 February 2009 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

still no contest.

Surmounter, Monday, 9 February 2009 00:35 (sixteen years ago)

(you made the right decision)

Surmounter, Monday, 9 February 2009 00:35 (sixteen years ago)

Haha! Only madonna album I actually care about though

Plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 9 February 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

silly goose.

Surmounter, Monday, 9 February 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

Borderline is really perfect

Plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 9 February 2009 00:37 (sixteen years ago)

makes me shudder everytime!

Surmounter, Monday, 9 February 2009 00:38 (sixteen years ago)

You ever heard the Sonic Youth cover of Into the Groove? They have this bit where you hear blasts of Madonna during points and it sounds like this ghost transmission where she's taking over the song from inside.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 9 February 2009 00:44 (sixteen years ago)

lucky star

37 x 18 = (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 9 February 2009 02:47 (sixteen years ago)

I just voted for "Borderline" but this is a really strong album, could have gone for any of these (probably "Burning Up" next)

Euler, Monday, 9 February 2009 03:07 (sixteen years ago)

Holy shit! I've never heard this chunky, vaguely motoriky demo of "Burning Up":

It's more Disco Not Disco than I've ever heard her.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 9 February 2009 03:11 (sixteen years ago)

this album gets better with every listen

Surmounter, Monday, 9 February 2009 03:14 (sixteen years ago)

HOLY SHIT this sounds awesome!

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 February 2009 03:14 (sixteen years ago)

Shame on you Surmounter for pushing me into the world of Madonna demos (or for including those two remixes in the poll).

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 9 February 2009 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

Her vocal attack was so awesome then.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 February 2009 03:21 (sixteen years ago)

yup

Surmounter, Monday, 9 February 2009 03:26 (sixteen years ago)

It was. And I'm waaay with you re: her good singing, Soto. You can hear her reach in this, supposedly her first performance ever (caught on tape):

Check out the fabulous "go on girl!" immediately before the music starts. We were there!

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 9 February 2009 03:29 (sixteen years ago)

that's called mastery

Surmounter, Monday, 9 February 2009 04:06 (sixteen years ago)

Borderline.

moley, Monday, 9 February 2009 04:09 (sixteen years ago)

my good friend questioned my relinquishment of vogue in favor of borderline the other night in light of watching the epic vogue vma's performance, but i'm glad i stuck to my guns.

Surmounter, Monday, 9 February 2009 04:13 (sixteen years ago)

Lucky Star

double bird strike (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2009 04:15 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, "go on gawrl."

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2009 04:36 (sixteen years ago)

Borderline kicks the shit out of Vogue

Plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 9 February 2009 08:55 (sixteen years ago)

Whoa, do gays of a certain age just hate "Vogue" as a rule now?

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2009 12:19 (sixteen years ago)

Between the three I guess I expect to run this poll, I think "Lucky Star" is the best, for that clunky, dubby, plunging, Larry Levan-baiting bassline.

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2009 12:28 (sixteen years ago)

LOL Alfred is going by the "Screaming Lobster of Challops" now, I mean wow. That's what I call moving up in the world! Welcome to the world of screen names, Al! :)

Playing the Burning Up video now. Fantastic.

Get Unbanned (Bimble), Monday, 9 February 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

wow look at that video performance from 1982~~~ <3 <3

Thanks Kevin! :)

Get Unbanned (Bimble), Monday, 9 February 2009 13:16 (sixteen years ago)

They don't even fucking MAKE dance music like that anymore. They don't even fucking MAKE it. There's a Factory Records All-Stars video she's on, too. It's got New Order on stage and all these folks from Factory Records on it and Madonna is a backup singer, I'm serious. That's what my friend told me, anyway.

I swear, she's supposedly the girl in the middle of the three female backup singers:

Get Unbanned (Bimble), Monday, 9 February 2009 13:24 (sixteen years ago)

That's not her Bimble. She *was* there at the Hacienda that night though and it was her first performance in the UK. Right here:

Disco/Very (Roz), Monday, 9 February 2009 13:55 (sixteen years ago)

'everybody'

lex pretend, Monday, 9 February 2009 13:57 (sixteen years ago)

xpost

Roz! My lastfm friend! Good to hear from you. I'm actually glad to hear it wasn't her, I don't really believe it was. I just don't believe it. I have a problem with believing that is really Madonna in that video, despite what my friend said. I love this video you posted, though. God, I told you they don't fucking make dance music like that anymore!

All the girls in my school had to dress like her, you know. All the girls had to dress like her. It was a Madonna epidemic.

Ozzy Goth Beatles (Bimble), Monday, 9 February 2009 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

man that Burning Up demo is incredible!

went with Holiday btw.

Disco/Very (Roz), Monday, 9 February 2009 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

They don't even fucking MAKE dance music like that anymore.

True. In fact they haven't since a bunch of gay DJs in Chicago invented something called House Music a few years later ;)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 9 February 2009 15:06 (sixteen years ago)

the epic vogue vma's performance

One of my favorite moments from her. Down to the mini-binoculars at the end.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 February 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

True. In fact they haven't since a bunch of gay DJs in Chicago invented something called House Music a few years later ;)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

Wow, justice severely done!

Plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 00:04 (sixteen years ago)

and the two worst songs got no votes.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 00:06 (sixteen years ago)

Justice indeed!

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 00:11 (sixteen years ago)

awesomeness

Surmounter, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:03 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, "Borderline" rules so hard. I bought the 12" single of that last month, w/ the extended mix of "Lucky Star" on the flip. Sometimes that seems like all the Madonna I'll ever need (but only sometimes).

Mark, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:08 (sixteen years ago)

No way that's I'd rank "Think Of Me" among the worst songs. For me, it is the best of the non-singles here.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:35 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe I should've voted for "Lucky Star."

I think my elementary school gym teacher kinda ruined this album for me.

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 02:34 (sixteen years ago)

There's also that scene in Running on Empty.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 02:40 (sixteen years ago)

at the 2:30 mark:

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

"Borderline" is good and all, but I'd take "Lucky Star," "Burning Up," "Physical Attraction" and "Holiday" (in that order) before I'd vote for "Borderline."

ilxor, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 05:44 (sixteen years ago)

'physical attraction' deserves more love (tho admittedly i wouldn't have voted for it)

or something, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 06:57 (sixteen years ago)

Physical Attraction.

Coffee Table LP's Never Breathe! (Bimble), Saturday, 21 February 2009 05:13 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

this fucking album

born to darraghmac (The Reverend), Saturday, 24 July 2010 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

After listening to this yesterday I would've voted for Physical Attraction.

fidel castro clone (corey), Saturday, 24 July 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

right!?

janice (surm), Saturday, 24 July 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe we were meant to be together
Even though we never met before
We got to move before the sun is rising
And you'll be walking slowly out the door

janice (surm), Saturday, 24 July 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

This album is awesome and totally classic. Never gets old.

'holiday' is just so damn great

would have defo got my vote

prego, Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

Put this on for my daughter the other day and told her it was katy perry

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

i love her voice on this album so so much.

prolego, Thursday, 22 September 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

'burning up' 12" absolutely bangs at 33 (ie slowed down)!! as played by andy butler on beats in space a couple years back

spacemindy, Friday, 23 September 2011 05:48 (fourteen years ago)

'everybody'

― lex pretend, Monday, February 9, 2009 1:57 PM (2 years ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

kmt why did i vote for "everybody" when the answer is obviously "burning up", she sings it like she's scrawling lipstick on a club bathroom mirror. I'M NOT THE SAME I HAVE NO SHAME

lex pretend, Friday, 23 September 2011 06:55 (fourteen years ago)

The thought of her scrawling on a bathroom mirror made me think of Courtney covering "Burning Up." Even though I was just a kid when it came out, "Burning Up" made me tingle.

thinveneer, Friday, 23 September 2011 07:42 (fourteen years ago)

Courtney covering "Burning Up."

omg did this actually happen??? or is it just something that should obviously have happened

lex pretend, Friday, 23 September 2011 07:45 (fourteen years ago)

I wish it had happened - she could murder it. There's still time.

thinveneer, Friday, 23 September 2011 07:58 (fourteen years ago)

i love her voice on this album so so much.

Yeah I love her voice on this too. Her early voice just had a mid-western, earnest quality to it. She was a good belter for someone with a limited voice at the time. I could tell she was trying to capture some of that in Hard Candy.

Tired of these edcuated basic bitches. (lilsoulbrother), Friday, 23 September 2011 16:08 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

I just realized I love this album so much because it sounds more like an underground dance record that happens to have great pop songs in tow than something engineered to be huge.

The Reverend, Friday, 5 April 2013 23:55 (twelve years ago)

I agree totally, her best album by a country mile
