Ways in which popular E4 teen comedy-drama Skins has made music better - let us list them

1) If it weren't for the Skins soundtracks, there wouldn't be any Broadcast songs on Spotify.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

2) Lil Wayne threatened in 2004 to leave music unless "A suitable replacement for As If" made it to television

Limoncello Carlin (The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

3) It provides a handy catch-all moniker - "you know, Skins music/bands" to summarise stuff you wish to avoid

Henry Frog (Frogman Henry), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

4) Only television programme ever to use Laura Cantrell as incidental music (that I can remember, admittedly).

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:12 (sixteen years ago)

5) Brief bump in downloads of Sunflower by Low after Chris hospital 'death' scene

Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:13 (sixteen years ago)

6) Skunk Anansie reunion put on ice after lead singer's name deemed "too embarassing even for us"

Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:16 (sixteen years ago)

7) Whenever its mentioned, it always makes me think of the scene in About A Boy where he walks along singing Mystikal, so then I want to listen to anything with a pen and pixel cover and forget Skins exists.

sheeeeeeit foxes (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:18 (sixteen years ago)

8) You know that bit in the US version of The Office where Jim and Pam listen to Jim's iPod together in the car park and you're thinking "Oh, this is quite touching" and it turns out they're actually listening to "Sing" by Travis? The bit in Skins where Crystal Castles give Sid a nervous breakdown is definitely better than that.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:22 (sixteen years ago)

9) Also that episode where Jal gets on stage and nicks some singer's hat will hopefully discourage the wearing of trilbys onstage by members of shit indie bands. It might not necessarily discourage the formation of shit indie bands themselves, but it's a start.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:24 (sixteen years ago)

Is the theme tune Broadcast? Wow.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:25 (sixteen years ago)

10) Sad ageing indie pervs across the nation realise that sounding like Libertines/Razorlight is no longer the best way to get young girls to have sex with them.

Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:27 (sixteen years ago)

xpost - No, but they're on the soundtrack albums. I have no idea what the theme tune itself is.

11) Skins has yet to feature trendy teacher Andrew Lincoln riding his bicycle to work to the accompaniment of the recorder bit from "The Boy With The Arab Strap".

12) Really, Teachers was much worse.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:28 (sixteen years ago)

13) There's that scene when they're all raving to Original Nuttah by UK Apache & Shy FX which let's face it is much much better than Pendulum.

Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:31 (sixteen years ago)

14) At least none of the characters started their own band.

To be fair, tho, the series 2 soundtrack has "Kit & Holly" by Echoboy on, which is still pretty great. Sandwiches it between Feeder and Turin Brakes, though.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:35 (sixteen years ago)

The musical content does actually sound quite good (Original Nuttah and Laura Cantrell pretty much represents one month of my entire, admittedly very repetitive music listening last year), but I still hate Skins for all its bullshit youth propaganda. Give me a teenager standing forlornly at a rainy bus stop wondering whether the last bus is going to turn up, or hanging round a street drinking viborg watching the tvs in the rental shop, or sitting in their bedroom staring dully out of the window and give me AN HOUR OF IT EVERY WEEK. With Original Nuttah and Laura Cantrell.

Wasn't one of the characters wearing a Fall t-shirt in an early episode?

GamalielRatsey, Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:37 (sixteen years ago)

um, if it wasn't for Skins, The Gossip would have no hits.

Mark G, Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:40 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, such a publicity shy, PR-less woman as Beth Ditto would have really struggled for coverage.

Limoncello Carlin (The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:43 (sixteen years ago)

that teachers soundtrack is surprisingly inoffensive

carbonara not glue (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:45 (sixteen years ago)

er yeah right mark (dom otm xpost)

carbonara not glue (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:46 (sixteen years ago)

skins episodes usually have the most contrived endings. im not sure i ever buy half the shit that they play/listen to either.

p-noid (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:46 (sixteen years ago)

No, but they're on the soundtrack albums. I have no idea what the theme tune itself is.

whatever it is it's even gayer than the Queer As Folk title theme

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:46 (sixteen years ago)

"hanging round a street drinking viborg watching the tvs in the rental shop"

TV rental shop? Is this supposed to be set in the 80s?

Ozman Bin Laden (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:47 (sixteen years ago)

Skins soundtrack >>>>> Teachers soundtrack, mostly because one has dubstep and the other has The Thrills.

Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:55 (sixteen years ago)

was Teachers the first UK show to do this shit?

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 11:57 (sixteen years ago)

Dubstep very much the The Thrills of the late 2000s, tbh

xp

Amazon.co.uk Review
It has often been noted what a plum role Quantum Leap's Sam Beckett was since Scott Bakula got to play just about every kind of character there is--for both men and women! It was also an amazing series for a composer to work on, with plenty of episodes requiring song adaptations and stylistic pastiche. But someone necessarily had to make tough decisions about what could and couldn't fit on one disc representing five years of music. This album is pretty comprehensive, though, featuring essential highlights such as the "Medley from Man of La Mancha", where Bakula's singing talent is put to best use, and "Alphabet Rap" where Dean Stockwell's isn't (and is all the funnier). Ray Bunch plays in the western, horror and political thriller genres here with suites from "The Last Gunfighter", "Blood Moon" and "Leaping On A String" (a fine John Williams nod). After showing this much flexibility you're left wanting more. But what you get instead is a 12-minute interview with Bakula, the only thing that mars this otherwise excellent soundtrack. --Paul Tonks

6. Gritty Shaker - David Holmes

^^ most influential track of all time imo

special guest stars mark bronson, Thursday, 5 February 2009 12:07 (sixteen years ago)

I am re-listening to "Smash It!" now. I had forgotten quite how fond I am of it.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 5 February 2009 12:07 (sixteen years ago)

That Spaced soundtrack still gets played in my local barbers whenever they're trying to convey a funky-but-respectable image.

Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2009 12:09 (sixteen years ago)

shame it's missing Fader Gladiator 'Battle Of The Planets'

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2009 12:11 (sixteen years ago)

There aren't enough people in their early 30s still putting on Mr Scruff and Kruder & Dorfmeister albums in the background, I'm sure we can all agree.

Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2009 12:14 (sixteen years ago)

Trigger Happy TV was another one to have a flotilla of soundtrack albums, and they're a bit up and down, but nothing like as much as the soundtrack CD for one of Dom Joly's other series, World Shut Your Mouth (I can't even remember if that was on BBC Three or what - I presume it was, and I vaguely remember it, like, happening, but I have no recollection of any of the details) -

1. Julian Cope - World Shut Your Mouth
2. Snow Patrol - How To Be Dead
3. Bronski Beat - Small Town Boy
4. Minuteman - Gave You All The Blame
5. Furniture - Brilliant Mind
6. The Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes
7. Mazzy Star - Into Dust
8. Prefab Sprout - Cars & Girls
9. Tricky - Abbaon Fat Track
10. Alex Parks - Beautiful
11. The Cure - Lullaby
12. Lloyd Cole & Commotions - Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken
13. Black Sabbath - Changes
14. Public Image Ltd - Rise
15. Scott Walker - My Death
16. The Beloved - The Sun Rising
17. The Proclaimers - Sunshine Over Leith

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 5 February 2009 12:15 (sixteen years ago)

(Obviously the last one should be "Sunshine On Leith", but I'm C&p'ing and couldn't quite be bothered correcting)

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 5 February 2009 12:16 (sixteen years ago)

o_O @ that

special guest stars mark bronson, Thursday, 5 February 2009 12:17 (sixteen years ago)

Admittedly, I can imagine a lot of that being used to soundtrack a man in a dog suit having his knackers stamped on by a man in a different colour dog suit. But still.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 5 February 2009 12:20 (sixteen years ago)

shame it's missing Fader Gladiator 'Battle Of The Planets'

I always liked the fact that they used dubiously legit tracks on the soundtrack of the episodes.

As a bootleggy star-wars / noise mash up is almost the most spaced thing ever.

and comparing Skins to Teachers is like comparing the old grey whistle test to the tube.

Hamildan, Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

10/10 for use of Amo Bishop Roden in emo/mongy scene yesterday.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 20 February 2009 09:48 (sixteen years ago)
