Still a lot of Kylie & Jason. Not so much otherwise. They were slowly fading, but still having #1s as ever before.

And I guess I am not alone in going for Donna Summer here.

Have sort of a soft spot for "Too Many Broken Hearts", but the rest of the Kylie & Jason stuff wasn't all that impressive. The carbon copy of "Sealed With a Kiss" was particularly pointless.

This Time I Know It's For Real, then Hand On Your Heart. Don't remember any of the other Donna songs I'm afraid.

From Wikipedia:

Pat and Mick were a British vocal duo consisting of popular radio personalities Pat Sharp and Mick Brown. The royalties from their record sales were donated to Capital FM's Help A London Child charity. All their singles were produced by Stock Aitken & Waterman.

The pair were often portrayed as unintelligent in media coverage, but this served to boost record sales, providing money for the charity in the process.

Don't understand the logic in the last sentence at all.

Donna Summer, no contest. One of her greatest singles, period; and "I Don't Want To Get Hurt" is an excellent pseudo-Pet Shop Boys song,

Another predictable but highly understandable vote for "This Time I Know..."

I wanna vote "When You Come Back To Me" which is heterosexual Jason Donovan's best single but "I'd Rather Jack", the Donna Summer singles and "Hand On Your Heart" are all in the running too.

Neurotic in a Nuts Way (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 February 2009 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

TTIKIFR, despite being an ugly acronym, is my vote. TUUUUUUNE bah, also was the theme tune to a Irish fashion TV programme when I was young, so nostalgic resonances.

I'd Rather Jack motherfuckers.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 5 February 2009 13:46 (sixteen years ago)

I rarely react against lyrics, but "I'd Rather Jack" has a really terrible and ugly ageist thing to them. A bit like another song from the same year: "Hey DJ (I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing)" by Beatmasters and Betty Boo. I absolutely despise the ageism in those two!

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 5 February 2009 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

i'd rather jack towers above the rest of this list

"I'd Rather Jack" has a really terrible and ugly ageist thing to them.

This is spot on, and is perversely why it towers above the rest of the songs here: They were writing about something they really cared about.

Never mind the fact that the producers were twice the age of the DJs they mentioned were twice the age of the singers...

Shut it grandad.

"I'd Rather Jack" would have been better if Mel and Kim had been able to record it, as SAW had originally intended, but sadly Mel Appleby was too ill to do so (and indeed died in 1989) - Waterman himself has expressed regret about the rather sub-par Reynolds Girls performance and thinks that as a Mel and Kim single it would have gone to number one.

On the other hand, the member of Fleetwood Mac to whom I played this song a few years ago roared with laughter and loved it!

It does indeed sound like a Mel & Kim single, so I can surely imagine it was originally intended for them.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 February 2009 11:27 (sixteen years ago)

I thought it was them, first time I heard it.

Mark G, Friday, 6 February 2009 11:31 (sixteen years ago)

I'd rather bosh than Guru Josh.

mike t-diva, Friday, 6 February 2009 11:59 (sixteen years ago)

Ah yes, the now magically reborn Mr Nineteen Nine-teeeez, Time For John Major man.
