Where's a good place to start with Wilco?

This doesn't seem to be the sort of band that would be popular around here, from what little I know of Wilco, which isn't much. If I wanted to investigate, what would be a good place to start? Especially for someone who basically isn't too drawn to rock currently? (Or should I just not bother?) I like Neil Young, if that helps. I know there's some cross over from Young fans to Wilco.

I've heard a few tracks and wasn't impressed. I just think it falls down in the melodies to be honest. And last time I heard there wasn't much rock in Wilco.

Summerteeth is good. That's about it.

If you like young I'd start with Being There.

What do people like about the new album? Seeing that listed on so many best-of lists here is partly what made me want to ask this.

Anodyne.

Everybody knows "rock"=music with guitars that you can't dance to. It's so that simple.

The new album is the only one I can sit ALL THE WAY through. (tho I don't have the first one). I think it's a good POP album. This nonsense about its being "experimental" is just that. I like to sing and dance to it sometimes, that's its draw. I dislike the lyrical approach in theory, but I find it works for me.

they're excatly the type of band popular around here, haven't you seen the posts where people list their favourite records? totally classic rock lover population here.

Wilco is a competent rock band that are pleasant to listen to; I can't imagine getting overly excited about liking or disliking them. I happen to like them, in a mild kind of way.

Sean, hmmm, that doesn't sound too inspiring.

DeRayMi, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, sorry, I guess it's just that all the media attention surrounding their latest release builds them up to be more than they are. I'm actually listening to "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" as I write this. I'm feeling relaxed. It's nice, really.

"Being There" is an ok album in a retro-rawk way - solid rather than inspired. But enough that when I read a stack of reviews saying "Summerteeth" was a massive improvement, I was anticipating something good. But it was dreary and pedestrian. Killed my interest in Wilco stone dead. Frankly I'd recommend not bothering.

Listening to YHF in a shop at the weekend it occurred to me that they should make an instrumental version of the LP. It's the vocals and words that let things down rather badly. IMHO of course.

yeah - i can't say i'm a big fan of tweedy's singing style either.

I never expected to care about Wilco after hearing Being There, which was like Ryan Adams Gold with extra bloat. What brought me back was Mermaid Avenue. Whatever your feelings about Billy Bragg, Wilco's role in it will win you over.

Where's a good place to start with Wilco?

Taking the cd back to the record store to get your money back.

Eh, since I'm here, I figured I'd throw my two cents in. "Summerteeth" is a fantastic album. Really, I can't figure out why hipsters despise it so. Everyone I know loves it. After that, yeah, the new one is okay; bit of a disappointment, though for longtime fans. Jane magazine put it down as well, asking "what's up, guys?" I can't imagine why someone would say they fail with the harmonies or melodies, since that's what they absolutely rule at and is the basis for their music entirely. I would get, in this order, "Summerteeth", "AM", "Being There" 2xcd, Yankeehotelfoxtrot and you can take or leave those billy bragg things.

Start with Uncle Tupelo, No Depression, Still Feel Gone, March 16-20, 1992, Anodyne. All wonderful if you enjoy the no depression country sound, plus you get the voice of Jay Fararr part of the time, who's voice is much stronger than Tweedy's.

I've never heard any Wilco before YHF and I've been really into it these past few weeks. It's very nice and pleasant, but at the same time, it didn't really give me the urge to get into any more Wilco.
