Those first two tracks are freaking PERFECT and I love "All Over the World," too, which might be my favorite ELO song (I know, I know).

i'm shy (Abbott), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

"All Over the World" is a great song and the sequence it soundtracks in the movie might be the most insane (which given the conclusion is saying something).

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 February 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

Worst thing: ON-J's part in "Dancin'."

i'm shy (Abbott), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

Title track and "All Over the World" are so plugged into the movie, but "Suddenly" is great in and out. I think it has to be just about the most perfect karaoke song ever.

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

FOR EFFING REAL

i'm shy (Abbott), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

"I'M AAA-LIVE!"

"Xanadu" comes close, but "I'm Alive" may be my favorite ELO song ever.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

"Magic" gives me memory chills. (born in '79)

Trip Maker, Friday, 6 February 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

magic, tho it seems retard-obvious. 2 great 2 deny

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

Wait, you remember this song when you were months old?

I get memory chills too, but mainly because I was deep into AM-radio pop radio stations then, so I get memories of being in a car non-stop with my grandparents hearing Mighty 690 play "Magic" in this tinny AM car radio all the time, alongside "My Sharona" and Sheena Easton's "Morning Train"

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

xpost, obviously

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

let it run -- elo (geoff lynne) song on electric dreams sndtrk is also gr8, though the rest of that one more accurately sucks

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

Duet with Gene Kelly's the only obvious dud track for me.

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

I've got a surprisingly good memory. Also, I think my mom's aerobics instructor was really into ONJ so I heard it a lot while sitting and waiting for the class to be over. (to Mackro)

Trip Maker, Friday, 6 February 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

magic also seems real to me - captures the weird, delusional, glassy-eyed certainty (and goth doominess) of new lust/love. creepy, witchy undertones only make it more OTM.

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

Title Track, by a comfortable, kitchy distance. A great soundtrack, tho.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 6 February 2009 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

Very very tough. "Suspended in Time" for the sensitive ballade...

Joe, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:29 (sixteen years ago)

I like the ONJ & Gene Kelly song a lot, if one doesn't take it too seriously; the whistling middle grates puts it a bit over-the-top in kitsch, though. Also, I vastly prefer the ONJ "Andrew Sisters" pastiche section (say what you want, but her harmonies are spot on) over The Tubes section (which, weirdly, is probably the most dated-as-in-hasn't-worn-well sounding thing on the album) in "Dancin'".

Joe, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

I've gone from ELO child fan to ELO detractor to ELO zealot, it seems

All Over the World

PappaWheelie V, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I was telling a friend how ridiculously good the ELO songs on this are, even today.

Ozzy Goth Beatles (Bimble), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:30 (sixteen years ago)

The Tubes section (which, weirdly, is probably the most dated-as-in-hasn't-worn-well sounding thing on the album)

Tubes section is flat out awful! The BIM Band would have done that part a lot better.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

Voting for probably the least famous song on the entire album. "The Fall".

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 February 2009 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

First cassette I ever bought that wasn't a john Williams soundtrack, so this album holds some serious weight in my personal canon.

All over the world gets my vote.

Brooker Buckingham, Friday, 6 February 2009 23:30 (sixteen years ago)

Voting for probably the least famous song on the entire album. "The Fall".

The Fall always win. I voted Magic. My sister had this album, and Grease. I swear I thought "Don't Bring Me Down" was on this.

james k polk, Friday, 6 February 2009 23:43 (sixteen years ago)

I guess I never saw the movie, just heard the soundtrack, because I think I would have remembered this.

james k polk, Friday, 6 February 2009 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

Title track all the way!

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Saturday, 7 February 2009 01:10 (sixteen years ago)

That "All Over the World" clip justifies my decision never to watch this movie. It would ruin the music for me.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 7 February 2009 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

One of the ten greatest musicals of all-time and unquestionably the most magical ever made. If Song of Norway was made by trolls (see Pauline Kael), then Xanadu was forged by winged godz in glitz. Oh sure the mere mortal Robert Greenwald signed it. But we who are cocooned forever in leg warmers know better.

If we were going strictly by the song's appearance in the movie, I'd go with "Dancin'" - the two eras/genres interweaving at the end is the precise moment the 1980s begin. But seeing as how this is a soundtrack poll, I'm going with the title cut. For years, my friends and I rang in the new year with Olivia's run up to the camera timed precisely to occur at midnight. "A place...where nobody dared to go...the love that we came to know..." We ARE worthy!

If you're a true cultist, you'll adore every shift in this astonishing remix:

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 7 February 2009 04:33 (sixteen years ago)

"all over the world"? you craaaazy.

"i'm alive" DESTROYYYYYYYYSSSSSS everything else. "magic" and "xanadu" are in contention, but it ultimately is no contest!!

mikebee (BATTAGS), Saturday, 7 February 2009 08:12 (sixteen years ago)

Alright I'm gonna play the whole fucking soundtrack again because I don't know what the hell to vote for. What, I've got until March 3rd? Haha. So much time! I love it.

you could call it a "fan" club but a man I can only be a "fan" of a hot (Bimble), Saturday, 7 February 2009 08:32 (sixteen years ago)

I think I'm going to vote for The Fall...but just give me a few moments to mull this over...

you could call it a "fan" club but a man I can only be a "fan" of a hot (Bimble), Saturday, 7 February 2009 08:39 (sixteen years ago)

There's no wrong answer here, but "Suddenly" is soooooo right.

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Saturday, 7 February 2009 08:55 (sixteen years ago)

And we do know that not every song from the film is represented on the soundtrack, right? The pomo finale "Fool Country" is MIA, for instance.
