"That Was The Night EVERYTHING CHANGED": Best Film Dialogue Samples In Pop

Nothing to do with the tune, just shoved in because it's cool and atmospheric. I reckon this cropped up originally because drunk people can't sing along with hip-hop and dance tracks, so they needed a hook to encourage pissed-up punter to play them. Hence the film dialogue. All together now, "My father wasn't scared of the Shogun. But the Shogun was scared of him!"

Blimey, I never thought I'd live long enough to see the No-Man revival, but seeing as it's here I ought to mention their sampling of some 'Twin Peaks' dialogue on 'Days in the Trees (Reich)', a lovely, spooky synth arpeggio with Sherilyn Fenn (?) sighing over the top about skinny dipping with some rough lads. 'It was the first time I ever fell in love...'

Props to Big Audio Dynamite who probably invented this kind of thing, eh? "I like a bit of a cavort". Oh, and the Smiths 'Take me back to dear old Blighty' from 'The L-Shaped Room', naturally...

stevie t, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yep, Tom you're absolutely right. Although RZA has a knack for the right film-sample doens't he? Witness the "There's no coke! What? You heard me you dumb fuck: there's no fucking coke!" somewhere on Ghostface's 'Iron Man' album. The melancholic samples from 'The Killer' as used on 'Only Built for Cuban Linx'. DJ Shadow used some nice lines from 'Altered States' on 'What does your soul look like'. Anyway the first rave I went to, the DJ, at a crucial part of the night around 2 A:M, put on a record with the stunning sample from 2001: "My God it's full of stars!" Changed my life that moment.

Omar, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

... forgot to mention Tricky, esp. the 'Let me tell you about my mother' line, culled from Blade Runner, (subject of a brilliant rumination in Penman's article on the man)....

stevie t, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Silver Fox' - Depth Charge - invents whole Wu Tang stylee

At the weekend I was dancin' inna club to a cheesey house track that sampled tha TOFFO advert - 'I've come fer ma boy' - dancefloor almost implodes wif gigglin

Big Audio Dynamite - FIRST ALBUM CLASSIC

Georid onna Monday, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fun Lovin'Criminals sampling Tarantino's Pulp Fiction dialogue. Err no, skip that one.

Stevie Nixed, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

St Etienne, So Tough:

"Of course, London's a big place, Mr Shadrak. A very big place. A man could lose himself in London. Lose himself. Lose himself. LOSE HIMSELF IN LONDON!"

and

"Do you think a girl should go to bed with a feller, if he doesn't love her?" - "No. What's his name?"

Dunno where they're from though.

Jack Seale, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

isn't the 'lose himself in london' one from billy liar?

rza samples win hands down in this.

tho the man...or astroman? ones come pretty close. specially the 'eart vs flying saucers' one. great film too

gareth, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

when i was in college, my roommate, blessedly another hip-hop head, and i wanted to freak out this total hippie who lived on our floor. so like at 2 in the morning, we called him up and played *some* of the opening gza skit. actually, he wasn't in, so he only got it on his machine. and then we continued playing bits and pieces of the skit until his mailbox was full. he never did catch on.

fred solinger, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I heard it said somewhere that someday all good things come to an end... I was born the day I met you" etc Smithereens, A Lonely Place. BTW - Why weren't they bigger?

Geoff, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Even a Stopped Clock Gives the Right Time Twice a Day" from "Withnail & I" that kicks off the guitar blitz-out that was shoegazing Ride's "Cool Your Boots" off GOING BLANK AGAIN.

Pop Will Eat Itself were also very big on film samples, notably Gang Czar Cyrus's catchphrase "Can You Dig It?" from "The Warriors," used in, appropriatedly enough "Can You Dig It"

On Seal's first album, the final song features generous dollops of dialogue from some film, and I've never been able to pinpoint which it is.

Tears For Fears sampled bits of Sally Field's pschizophrenia opus, "Cybil" on SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR. The album title itself is a reference to the film (as Cybil's psychiatrist sat, purportedly, in a big chair).

The BEST sample dialogue: Revolting Cocks sampling the "Squeal like a Pig" rape scene out of "Deliverance" on their signature hymnn, "BEERS STEERS + QUEERS"

alex in nyc, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'but to have it happen to my own neck is...ridiculous! fgphakkkk...' (cue pointless killah priest song)

and i can't name any favorites except for tons of rza stuff from kung fu movies i've never seen (i like the intro to odb's 'snakes') and de la's 'patti dooke' is good. speaking of ghostface, anyone know what that sample is on 'wildflower'? uh, yeah, just asking.

ethan, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't that "even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day" sample also used on one of Orbital's early tracks?
One of my favourites is "No man with a good car needs to be justified, on Ministry's "Jesus Built My Hotrod", taken from Wiseblood.

For constant use of good samples, I'd say Skinny Puppy's gratuitous use of horror movie snippets. There are plenty of lists of these all over the net, so I'll skip them here.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's also GodSpeedYouBlackEmperor! sampling film-dialogue of course. Not that I know from which film they lifted the dialogue...

Stevie Nixed, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I must stop fear... Fear is the mindlkiller... I must control my fear" from Dune (I think) formed the basis of Eon's 'Mindkiller'. I love that record.

"Mr Kirk... You have a son named Robert? Robert Kirk aged 17"

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry Mr Kirk. You'd better come down to the station house. Your son is dead."

"D-d-dead? H-h-how?"

"He died of an overdose"

('Mr Kirk's Nightmare' - 4 Hero. Anyone know the film/TV show?)

'Bounty Killers' - Depth Charge (Fistful of Dollars?)

All great.

An early Staurt Murdoch demo has a sample from 'A Bout de Souffle'. The big ponce.

Worst sample: The end of 'Come Together' has Andie MacDowell simpering "That's beautiful... that's really beautiful" from 'Sex, Lies & Videotape'. It's a great film but out of context it just sounds totally yeach.

Nick, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"shadders? on me lungs? i've been eaten away oh god in heaven help me" from alfie on some god forsaken carter track i'll pretend i can't remember. see also "alfie" by divine comedy, or not...

plumbing the depths even further, various Highlander snippets throughout "a kind of magic"

must......get.....coat.......now....

carsmilesteve, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I couldn't agree more about the Tricky/Blade Runner sample. Haven't read Penman's comments, but I can imagine.

Not the greatest sample, but memorable none the less. One of the AIM tracks, has a wholesale 3 minute plus sample from Halloween, diologue between Donald Plesance, at his creepiest, and a cop "Yoouu let him ouutttt"

K-reg, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Clitus I'm BORRRRRED....what PLAYthing can you offer me today?"

"A small body in the S-K system your Majesty. The inhabitants refer to it as the planet.....EUUUURRRRRRTH."

"How PEACEful it looks."

Which is from Flash Gordon and used by of course the Orb but every time FG is on the TV I always miss the first bit. And then end up watching the rest of the film anyway.

Tom, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"My mind is going / there is no question about it" in New Order's 'Murder'. I think I may have heard this before I saw 2001 and then there was a moment when I suddenly clicked - that's HAL!

Nick, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
I'm still partial to a line you hear in a White Zombie track: "It is not heresy...and I will NOT recant!"
Does anyone know what movie that came from?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Upthread Omar mentioned an old rave track that began with a bit of 2001 dialogue

"My god...its full of stars"

Anyone tell me what that track is? Been trying to find out since 91!

blue, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm still partial to a line you hear in a White Zombie track: "It is not heresy...and I will NOT recant!""

Martin Luther said that, originally.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The John Carpenter samples (Lord of Darkness?) all throughout Endtroducing is what I love most.

There's also GodSpeedYouBlackEmperor! sampling film-dialogue of course. Not that I know from which film they lifted the dialogue...

Hate to dissappoint but I highly doubt its a film at all if your reffering to the first album.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

from what i understood back in the day the dead flag blues bit was a lee marvin monologue for a film by one of the godspeed guys was trying to put out.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Believe that started from an article saying it sounded like someone famous to later articles misquoting that as actually being said individual.
The band being a bunch of wankers when in band mode aren't exactly to be trusted to clear this up.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"We are the music makers... and we are the dreamers of dreams."

(All of Aphex's film samples are great. Particularly the ones from "Sound of Music," and the track on We Care with the murky, submerged loop of dialogue that's supposedly from a porno film. "A surprise party isn't my idea of a good time, Fantasia....")

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I know everybody hates Primal Scream around here, but they have great dialogue samples from some pretty weird films: Peter Fonda in Wild Angels on "Loaded" ("we wanna be free! to do what we wanna do!"), Cleavon Little from Vanishing Point on Kowalski, but best of all is the "Destroy! Kill all hippies!" line from "Out of the Blue" (a truly truly bizarre and harrowing movie - Neil Young and Dennis Hopper make nihilistic punk film and get most everything wrong, except for the nihilism). Dunno the actress on that one, unfortunately.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

PRML SCRM have there supporters. I hear Bobby G even stalks Kate.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Being 'merican, I suspect I would have a different take on PRML SCRM if I were subjected to their British press. They seem a lot more high profile over there (and thus backlash is expected).

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

what was the sample on the one instrumental from the Cha Cha Cohen album from? long story about a very stressed out man telling a joke about a cat dying.

mosurock (mosurock), Thursday, 15 May 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

There are two:

"I'll show you the life of the mind! AAAAAARGH! I'll show you the life of the mind!" from Barton Fink and Plug's "Life Of The Mind"

and

"Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day" from Withnail & I and Orbital's, er, whatever it was, and Ride's "Cool Your Boots".

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 May 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine used to love that one Pantera song that starts with the Carlito's Way quote: "You think you're big time? Well you gonna die... big time! You ready mother fucker!? Here come the pain!!!"

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 15 May 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Who loves you? And who do you Love?... It's time to start... running" from teh Running Man in that Messiah track
all the Name of the Rose samples on the Neph's second album specifically "Penitenziagite!"
"Wake Up, Time to Die" from Blade Runner in PWEI track obv

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Loup's "Downhill Racer" has some great dialogue from Robert Redford in, um, Downhill Racer.

http://a-brooklyn-mile.com/mp3/downhill.mp3

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

all the Name of the Rose samples on the Neph's second album specifically "Penitenziagite!"

! I'll have to listen for that more closely next time...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 May 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Primal Scream "just what is it that you want to do" sample from Wild Angels was originally sampled by Mudhoney, and they included more of it.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 16 May 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"You want my brain?"

"Only a portion of it."

I think this was Bassomatic, but I'm not sure on the film.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 16 May 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

any darkside/jungle track that samples predator 2/terminator/etc is usually great.

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 16 May 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"You're talking about things I haven't done yet."

metalheadz - terminator

gareth (gareth), Friday, 16 May 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Some stupid club song samples relentlessly from Mommie Dearest.

Also, doesn't Armand Van Helden make it a point to put a tiny snip of film dialogue before, like, every track on his albums?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to listen to endtroducing by dj shadow a lot a few years, but probably haven't heard it in about two years
then, when i was watching twin peaks for the first time and the giant said "its happening again" as sampled by shadow i was fucking terrified
i couldn't figure out where i had heard it before, the wierd deja vu combined with the eeire atmosphere in twin peaks freaked me out

the wu tang samples are great as well

robin (robin), Saturday, 17 May 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

also the
"-they gave you what?

-lsd"
bit from fear and loathing,as sampled in some acid techno track is quality

robin (robin), Saturday, 17 May 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

FUSE aka Ritchie Hawtin devoted a whole track to THX1138 called 'Theychx'---'I need something stronger' 'Take two red capsules...'

oops (Oops), Saturday, 17 May 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"you can turn your back on a person, but never turn your back on a drug"

another Fear & Loathing sample in a song by Twig (fierce panda drill'n'bass)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 18 May 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...

I haven't found the original movie yet, but 4Hero got that sample from a 1971 track called "Once you understand" by a group "Think".

Trauma, Friday, 13 August 2004 09:07 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
...REALLY..?
soz didnt mean to shout ,bit pist.

people were using sampled dialogue even in 1971..?
how bloody interesting

always imagined it was some kind of anti-drug propaganda film/summat
..."he died of an overdose" ,,,[and then, just before the riff comes in...:] "*oooww*" [a little anguished cry from the unfortunate bob's dad] [ check it out...]
...yes ,i'm not sure where the title of this thread came from ,but the first time i heard mr kirk's nightmare was one of those nights...

douglas e kipping[e], Saturday, 4 June 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

I always thought someone should use the "I never fuck for money, I only fuck for fun" line from "Shampoo."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 4 June 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

Always loved the "it's in the trees!... it's coming!!!" from Kate Bush' "Hounds Of Love"... don't remember the name of the movie ("Night Of The Devil" or so?) but the sequence it's taken from is also wonderful.

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Saturday, 4 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

those film samples throughout jay-z's "streets is watching".

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 4 June 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I just watched "Shaolin v. Lama" again, forgot how many WU-snippets pop up: "Allow me to demonstrate the skill of Shaolin...the special technique of shadow boxing". "weren't you just using the wu tang school metal against me?" "I know so many styles...forgive me!" Besides that, it's a classic, unfortunately had to buy it cos it's not in rental circulation anymore.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

that black star song that starts off with the 'style wars' quote and the mans like "all you see is crime in the city"

088b, Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

ministry's "jesus built my hotrod" has a blue velvet sample in addition to the sample sean mentioned above.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Guns 'n Roses, "Civil War":

"What we've got here is....failure....to communicate. Some men you just can't reach."

(Cool Hand Luke)

PB, Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

I love the Desperate Living sample at the end of Marilyn Manson's first album. Made my day.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Sunday, 5 June 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

"Just what is it that you want to do?"
"We wanna be free, we wanna be free ..to do what we wanna do. And we wanna get loaded, and we wanna have a good time. And that's what we're gonna do. We're gonna have a good time, we're gonna have a party."
-"Loaded," Primal Scream

The clip's from some 50s biker movie...The Wild Bunch or something similar. :p

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Sunday, 5 June 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

I love the sampled dialogue from The Matrix in M.R.I.'s "To Be Honest":

"Let me give you a piece of advice.... Be honest. He knows more than you could imagine-imagine-imagine-imagine-imagine....."

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 5 June 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

No, the Think song doesn't sample film dialogue. It's a mainly spoken-word track (sung chorus though) that was basically just an anti-drug PSA.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 5 June 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)
