Johnny Fever, Saturday, 7 February 2009 01:24 (sixteen years ago)

human is the winner here btw. prove my flatmate wrong!

Gukbe, Saturday, 7 February 2009 01:24 (sixteen years ago)

Better as in tolerable, or better as in complete absurdity? I was assuming tolerable.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 7 February 2009 01:26 (sixteen years ago)

SEX ON FIRE obviously.

danzig, Saturday, 7 February 2009 01:28 (sixteen years ago)

are we human or are we dancer is just stupid.

danzig, Saturday, 7 February 2009 01:28 (sixteen years ago)

I was reallly into Human for an afternoon, I will never be into the other one.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 7 February 2009 01:29 (sixteen years ago)

better as in tolerable, though certainly the absurdity makes it more tolerable?

Gukbe, Saturday, 7 February 2009 01:35 (sixteen years ago)

Hopefully the Killers track wins this handily. It's not terrible, just meh. The other track is fucking awful.

ilxor, Saturday, 7 February 2009 05:31 (sixteen years ago)

I find the KoL song is, as with many songs with "Sex" in the title, improved immeasurably by replacng the word "sex" with "dicking".

what you know about hat? I know all about hat. (edwardo), Saturday, 7 February 2009 05:36 (sixteen years ago)

i've never heard either song, but sex on fire obviously kills puny human

dagmar at full power (contenderizer), Saturday, 7 February 2009 07:01 (sixteen years ago)

I gave this some thought and arrived at the point of being too ashamed to vote for either.

Someone in that youtube clip's comment thread (ULTIMATE RESOURCE) thinks the Killers line is a reference to something Hunter S. Thompson said, about "America [..] raising a generation of dancers."

Hm.

Kyle Clewett (bassace), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 02:27 (sixteen years ago)

It's true! not that it makes it any better.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 02:39 (sixteen years ago)

The song doesn't do that much for me but how is "Sex On Fire" misogynist?

Sundar, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 02:55 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i was going to ask the same thing

lil waynes babymama (musically), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 02:57 (sixteen years ago)

i was being harsh.

but yeah, a song about having sex while 'kiddies' watch and then getting a blowjob while he's driving doesn't sound great. a lot has to do with his voice and the tone in which he sings the song.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:00 (sixteen years ago)

actually the 'kiddies' watching bit was misheard on my part, having checked out the lyrics just now.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:00 (sixteen years ago)

Lay where you're laying
Don't make a sound
I know they're watching
They're watching

All the commotion
The kiddie like play
Has people talking
Talking

You
Your sex is on fire

Dark of the alley
The breaking of day
Head while I'm driving
I'm driving

Soft lips are open
Them nuckles is pale
Feels like you're dying
Your dying

Is it really possible to have a misogynist voice?

Sundar, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:05 (sixteen years ago)

I was headed in that direction, but ultimately voted for KOL simply because they don't appear to be capable of anything of worth whereas most of the Killers' singles prior to "Human" were pretty good.

some dude, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:11 (sixteen years ago)

wrong tack some dude!!!

Is it really possible to have a misogynist voice?

The tone of his voice always sounds dead serious, like he really, really means it. The song is basically saying "yeah, you don't mean anything to me, but damn you give good head". Not misogynistic within itself (nothing wrong with a girl wanting to give head if she's so inclined), and again I was being harsh by using the term, but not in anyway seeing the possibilities of anything being wrong with it at all. Like a guy who would fuck a girl who was so drunk she could barely walk and think it was cool because she didn't say no.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:18 (sixteen years ago)

Last months SPIN "Seriously, though, how can we humans be 'dancer'?"

I never thought that line would get so much attention! It just makes such sense to me. It's hard to explain. There was something bionic about it, something extraterrestrial. I knew it wasn't perfect grammar.

that would have been a perfect moment to say something like "I read some book and the phrase stuck with me."

james k polk, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

from the website:

"Those familiar with the band's oeuvre will recognize their signature in the synth-heavy "Human," four minutes of sweeping, epic rock, on which Flowers sings: "My sign is vital/ My hands are cold/ And I'm on knees, looking for the answer/ Are we human, or are we dancer?" He says the lyrics were inspired by a disparaging comment made by Hunter S. Thompson about how America was raising a generation of dancers. But the song also had some help from album producer Stuart Price (aka Jacques LuCont), known for his work with Madonna and Missy Elliot, and who'd previously remixed "Mr. Brightside." "He was the icing on the cake," says Stoermer."

Gukbe, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:23 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, this seems pretty easy to me. 'human' isnt a good song by any means, but it's 1000x better than 'SoF'

jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

Wow, I completely forgot JLC existed.

You know what? Fuck Kings of Leon. I don't know why I have such a visceral reaction to them, but it has ever been thus.

Morley Timmons, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 07:23 (sixteen years ago)

THIS SEX IS ON FIRE!!!1

ilxor, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

'This sex is on fire' just sounds like something Alan Partridge would say at the moment of climax. It's actually an even worse lyric than 'are we human or are we dancer?'

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

Disagree, for precisely those reasons

Robin van Injury (country matters), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

saw a dirty white van a few weeks ago. In the dirt on the back someone had written, instead of the usual 'also available in white' or whatever, "SEX IS ON FIRE".

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

I went out to the pub for an hour and there was a guy in there doing THIS SEX IS ON FIRE with just a piano. It was horrible.
