Tuned into Resonance FM yet?

Heard this yet? It's a FM radio station based in Soho, London, that actually has been given a year's licence. Resonance FM is so leftfield and experimental it makes Mixing It sound like Radio One's morning show. It can be heard via their internet site or within a 4-mile radius of their transmitter in Dean Street (further if you're lucky).

It's 104.4 FM, right next to XFM - just tuned in and they seem to be playing cut-up collages of radio static, analogue synth noise and plunderphonics. I met one of the producers at the Damo Suzuki gig, she mentioned that they played two hours of The Boredoms last week. The Kosmiche club does evenings of Krautrock etc. Great!

marinecreature, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They started this just as I was abt to leave to canada! I know I can hear it over the web but I'm busy over here. But will have to tune in once I get back.

Julio Desouza, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

does it play spam?

Queen There Will Be No Talk of Eating People in this House G, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just can't imagine wanting to hear this stuff on the radio - there's something about experimental music that makes having an active control over what you listen to and where and on what very important to me, whereas the random and passive and crappy-transistor factors are what makes radio appealing.

Tom, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

philT to thread!

Jeff W, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom- you can't listen to this stuff on the radio for too long I suppose but it is time we had some alternative to either a) pop music or b) 'alternative' radio stations like XFM. Radio 3 has 'Mixing it' but I don't like robert sandall and I am not into classical music.

''there's something about experimental music that makes having an active control over what you listen to and where and on what very important to me''

I wouldn't want to listen to experimental music in the car or on the train but as long as I can listen to this in my room in peace and quiet at 10 pm its OK. Can you explain the 'what' here. Surely listen to something you don't expect is the point of radio in general!

Julio Desouza, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, it's kind of easy on the ear (well, mine andyway)... excellent programme today of bizarre and obscure film soundtracks. Listings on the Resonance FM web site.

marinecreature, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if they have the license for a year then with luck they will be bored with wacky "plunderphonics" in a few weeks and actually start thinking about things like intelligent programming => in a few months their own attitudes to their own records will have changed, under pressure of repetition-slog, which might be interesting (at last haha)

mark s, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ed b*xter is a nice fellow and admirably dedicated to the cause yadda yadda, but sweet god he can be a terrible writer (i just read the webpage: "experimental" does not extend to that press release, that's for sure...)

mark s, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark, so they are repeating programmes. Oh, no man, thats awful!

And why plunderphonics? why not John tilbury playing FOR BUNITA MARCUS for 75+ minutes? Now thats my idea of radio!

Julio Desouza, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...

Clear Spot Marcello Carlin

A rare enactment of public grief as writer and journalist Marcello Carlin presents with a tribute to his late partner Laura on the third anniversary of her death.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

it's started....

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Won't be able to hear it but I hope it is going well. Will there be an archive?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, thanks for the reminder Martian!

I've always loved this Small Faces song...

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

probably not, however some programs get repeated overnite [it's a long shot]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello the new Ivor Cutler?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he has a very good voice for radio.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, he does.

also we need a flamenco primer thread.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yuk, can't believe my comments upthread, love classical music now.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Now...Arab Strap

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the flamenco bit was great! He should write about it somewhere. a primer would be ace, I need a way in to that music.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Excellent stuff there... particularly the Elgar and the Pulp at the end. You did good, Marcello.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah you did great -- held yourself really well.

Hope you'll sleep a bit easier tonight marcello.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Friend of mine, Art Terry does a "non-black-sounding" show of Black Music (can't remember the name, at the moment). It's not on at a time when I can usually tune in though.

I don't think everything on there could be classified as "experimental".

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to listen to Resonance FM on the internet using iTunes and I liked it very much. But lately it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone using iTunes on Mac help me?

f*lippo, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for all the kind comments.

As I suspected, the actual physical business of cueing up music, sorting out timings, etc., kept me busy enough to stop me from getting over-emotional. Also unlike last time I had an engineer in the studio with me who helped me out with all the technical stuff, particularly when I was concentrating on doing the readings, so having company in the studio was also therapeutic and kept my mind on the job. The final sequence was difficult but I kept my countenance.

Here is the playlist:

FRANK WILSON: "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" (from the Virgin 2CD compilation "The Best Northern Soul Album In The World...Ever!")

BOBBY PARIS: "Night Owl" (from the CamPark CD compilation "CamPark - On The Northern Side Vol 2")

THE ACTION: "I'll Keep On Holding On" (from the Edsel compilation "The Ultimate Action")

THE SMALL FACES: "The Autumn Stone" (from the Sanctuary 2CD compilation "Ultimate Collection")

PAUL WELLER: "Picking Up Sticks" (from the Island CD "Heliocentric")

Soundtrack for recitation from Alan Clark's Diaries - BOARDS OF CANADA: "Kid For Today" (from the Warp EP "In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country")

YO LA TENGO: "You Can Have It All" (from the Matador CD "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out")

DICK POWELL: "Young And Healthy" (from the Turner/EMI 2CD compilation "The Best Of Busby Berkeley At Warner Bros: Motion Picture Soundtrack Anthology")

THE DUFAY COLLECTIVE featuring VIVIEN ELLIS: "Eno Pouco E No Muito" (from the Chandos CD "Miracles: 13th Century Songs In Praise Of The Virgin Mary")

PACO PENA and his FLAMENCO DANCE COMPANY featuring THE LOSADA BROTHERS: "El Patio" (from the Nimbus 2CD album "Arte Y Pasion: Live In Concert")

JACK KEROUAC with STEVE ALLEN (piano): "The Sounds Of The Universe Coming In My Window" (from the EMI CD "Poetry Of The Beat Generation")

ARAB STRAP: "The Girls Of Summer" (from the Go! Beat CD "Mad For Sadness")

LO-FIDELITY ALL STARS: "How To Operate With A Blown Mind" (Skint CD title track)

ELGAR/SIR MALCOLM SARGENT/LIVERPOOL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA/HUDDERSFIELD CHORAL SOCIETY/GLADYS RIPLEY (contralto) et al: closing section of "The Dream Of Gerontius" (1945 recording) (from Testament 2CD album)

PULP: "Sunrise" (from the Island CD "We Love Life")

Sadly there wasn't any time to put in something by Al Bowlly, so to make up for that the next programme I plan to do for Resonance will be a special on British dance bands and crooners of the '30s and '40s, in a couple of months' time (in particular, how a particular strain of the British dance band scene ended up giving birth to the likes of Derek Bailey and Basil Kirchin, so there's a perspective you don't normally get on Radio 2).

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 26 August 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The programme's being repeated at some point next Wednesday morning (not quite sure of the exact time). Also Knut and Chris at Resonance agreed to make an MP3 copy of the show for me, which I'll pick up when I get back from holiday, so it will be preserved.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 26 August 2004 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello, the show was wonderful. It was a sterling example of everything radio can and should be.

thanks fer posting the whole track listing, friend. I will definitely be seeking some of these tracks!!

(and, god, do I share love love for "Autumn Stone" by Steve and the faces. So brilliant)

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 26 August 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck, I missed this. Shall try to catch the re-run!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 26 August 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

are these guys looking for DJs? or is too late? this station sounds really great.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Not at all, Resonance are always happy to take more DJs on, provided you've got an interesting idea for a programme and aren't just going to come in and play your favourite records (or if you are, then have an interesting take on doing so). Email them at info@resonancefm.com and ask whether you can get a Clear Spot slot.

BTW, my Clear Spot programme will be on again next Wednesday between 9:30-11:00 am.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 26 August 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the info marcello. ill check out your show next wednesday.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
Thought I'd revive, just to say (someone has to innit) that mark s will be on this tomorrow 2-3 pm (GMT).

The London Ear Ben Thompson
In this week's Halloween Special, Ben Thompson talks to visionary former Wire editor Mark Sinker about "the fear of music". It is just possible that Soweto Kinch's jazz/hip-hop/spoken word fusion landmark about a trip to the dole office will also get an airing.

They need 60 grand.

ewmy, Thursday, 22 February 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

Why don't they go on Dragons' Den and ask for it there?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 22 February 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone ever heard 'Epistaxis Time' or its predecessor 'The Exciting Hellebore Shew'? Absolutely brilliant manic-depressive comedy (if that makes sense), made by a dude who can't decide whether he's going to pretend to attempt suicide or mix some fucked-up hardcore electro.

unfished business, Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Is it as good as Dirty Surprise?

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Well, Dom, put it this way, if I had half his mixing abilities and free time I'd like to think it'd be getting somewhere...

unfished business, Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Yes I totally love Resonance FM's Epistaxis Time and the Hellebore Show! I listen to some episodes over and over and over. Sheer boundary-pushing amazingness that you won't find anywhere on commercial radio- if you ask me. Inspiring...

ravaged cabbage, Sunday, 25 February 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

'Traffic Poetry' being the tormented highlight...

unfished business, Sunday, 25 February 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)
