heard an interview on the radio a few weeks ago, talking about how Grazin in the Grass was created, about hanging out with the hippie elite in 60's San Fran. very likeable dude.

masekela was a great arranger/producer. some of the miriam makeba stuff he produced just has phenomenal arrangements.

masekela is a little jazzier iirc? i dont know enough about "early" masekela--i have grrr but i just dont know jazz that well. the mid-to-late-70s, when hed really developed that "grazin in the grass" cool-afro-jazz shit is some of my favorite music of all time, though. "i am not afraid" and "the boy's doing it" are the two best i think.

Will check that one out! My store has Americanization and a live one that didn't excite me too much.
Masekela is kind of all over the place - short songs, some are straight jazzy, some have vocals and are a little more funk/afro in sound. I'm totally not a jazz expert.
This is the first song:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMcmJJJix5s

Vinyl version of that album also has a weird 1 minute goof on "Grazing" after the runout groove.

Finally saw him live. A duet jazzy show with pianist Larry Willis whom he met in 1960 at the Manhattan School of Music. He covered Louis Armstrong, Miriam Makeba, the Stylistics "You Make Me Feel Brand New,"and did Grazin in the Grass and Stimela/Coal Train, and they closed with "Cottage for Sale." Plus a number of great stories about New York in the early '60s. I have seen the 2 of them do these numbers on Youtube, and even a same story, but it still felt sincere and passionate.

Saw them a few years ago at the Jazz Standard and was considering going again this past time through. Great music, great storytelling.

It's included in full on the 3cd set called Masekela 66-78 or similar as well as the other lp they cut together. I also have their lp without him which is pretty great too. But that 3cd set is most of what I know him for apart from.the Monterey appearance, him being a sideman on The Byrd So You Want To Be A Rock& Roll Star and the much later Coal Train which I heard a bit in the 80s . There is an earlier version on that set.

66-76 & all pretty great.
― Stevolende, Friday, 3 December 2021 07:51 (three years ago)
i got to see him play a couple of times and had a picture taken with him after the show by a pro photographer friend. He asked, "Is that your father? Do you want him in the shot?" I said "No, that's just a friend. But you can be my father if you want!"He laughed and said "I would be your grandfather. So I will be your grandfather" and then we took the shot. Hugh Masekela is my grandfather.
