Can anyone settle a long controversy involving the drum machinethat was used in Phil Collins "Sussudio". The original albumcover say it was a tr-909, some internet publishings say it was a LinnDrum and the Phil Collins ...Hits CD cover says it was a DMX. can anyone settle this.
Heres the song if you are not familiar, if you were in cryo status since the mid-80s or if you have had anmesia since them

Whatever it as, it was strongly augmented and made unrecognizeable by an extreme gate effect.

i have no official information to offer, but it doesn't really sound much at all like a lynndrum or a 909. good points of reference: blue monday & rockit both use the DMX, and they sound pretty close to the break at the beginning of sussudio (except with less reverb) the snare on rockit has more treble but the clap from blue monday and the one blended in with the snare sound on sussudio are clearly the same.
sorry if giving a straight answer is buzzkill - if it makes you feel any better i REALLY hate this song and now i've had to listen to the intro 4 times in a row.

How are your heartless and unprovoked attacks on poor Phil Collins supposed to make anyone feel better?

Heartless and unprovoked attacks on Phil Collins brighten my day.

I guess this is the closest you can get to Phil Collins' version:http://www.philcollins.co.uk/jacket1a.htm
I agree it doesn't sound like a 909 though. A 909 is the typical 90s dance/techno drum machine, isn't it? Not exactly sounding like "Pump Up The Jam" this one.

And btw. Is "There is no Fairlight on this record" supposed to be an 80s equivalent of Queen's (in)famous "No Synthesizers!"? :)
― Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 10:39 (sixteen years ago)
mmm, I say no:
Queen were trying to stick to 'old fashioned' production values. Whereas "there is no fairlight" was trying to put the fairlight in the past.
possibly.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 10:49 (sixteen years ago)
The Fairlight was very much the Present in 1985 though.
― Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 10:56 (sixteen years ago)
Sounds more like a DMX than a Linn or 909 to me.
― moley, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 11:00 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, a DMX for the basic beat (kick/snare/hihat), I think. David Frank (of The System, who used the DMX a lot, eg on 'You Are In My System') is credited with it on the site Geir linked to above. I note that Collins is credited with the 909, so I assume they used that as well (for example the handclaps sound like the 909 ones).

More fuel, taken from a gearheads forum.
Back to Emu, they came out with another model called the SP-12. You could actually sample your own sounds! If you wanted to save them, you could, provided you had some paint on the wall to watch dry.... then came the Hip-Hop ESSENTIAL Emu SP-1200! Public Enemy loved this box! It sounded really cool if you half-plugged a 1/4" plug into certain outputs... did weird filter things! It had one really cool signature kick sample that you can hear on the into of "Sussudio".
― MaresNest, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 14:13 (sixteen years ago)
It's not a drum machine or even a gated drum. The sound is Benny Hill auditioning Collins after diminutive Irish slaphead Jackie Wright left the show through ill health. Sadly despite a satifying 'thwock' Collins failed the audition due to his instance in replacing 'Yakety Sax' with 'Watcher of the Skies'.
