the use of piano in dance music, rfi, s/d, taxonomize

the europhonic house piano thred is just too small for how good the combination of killer piano + dancing is--plus dr. ronan, esq., professor emeritus of house music, thinks that all the dfa piano revival is not 'house piano' as such and more 'disco piano'

heres the thing: house piano, disco piano, trance piano, whatever, i dont care, i just want to dance to a fuckin piano. hit me up. recommendations, multi-post histories, graphs, liveblogging: if it has to do with pianos, and dance music, it belongs here

max, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 01:23 (seventeen years ago)

sti... ahem, betty botox's extended edit of 'going back to my roots' by richie havens is pretty crucial on the more disco-flavoured side of things.

'happy house' is a live band trying to play 'do it now' by dubtribe more than it's 'disco piano', imo.

if we are including electric piano, "everything is love" by mighty clouds of joy is a must (the black cock edit too)

er, that's meant to be "weekend" by phreek. maybe too obvious, but it's always the first thing that comes into mind when someone says the words "piano" and "breakdown". pisses on every single tasteful weak ass dfa endorsed £145-designer-t-shirt pianodisco track from a very great height

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

^^^kdjizzle. maybe a little too RAW for your thread

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 09:53 (seventeen years ago)

i almost posted that phreek track too, but realized that the piano part is emphasized a lot more in phantom slasher's edits "skull volley" and "tripod" (which i think are the same)

soul capsule law of grace

only youtube of it i can find is from efdemin playin it at sonar, i imagine sound quality may be gash. He played it i saw him at weekend over the summer at about 9am on a friday morning (god bless you berlin) and i nearly burst into tears on the dancefloor. Spent ages trying to get hold of it but about £100 any time i saw it. i was absolutely ecstatic earlier on this year when i realised all the soul capsule tracks were collected on a CD which comes with the special edition of the first melchior productions album

favourite new(ish) piano track is wookies gallium which got a pretty shady vocal cut this year

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

was law of grace a crazy short run? or is it so expensive just because its fantastic and on that villalobos takataka comp?

Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

If we're talking Henrik Schwarz then surely we should be talking about (the second half of) his remix of Alton Miller's "Clouds Are Gone" (sadly not on youtube)!

more of that raw shit ya'll:

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 10:51 (seventeen years ago)

Obv. there's lot of UK funky that sounds like a ruffer version of "La Esquina" - stuff like D-Malice's "Visions", Seany B's "Stomper" etc. This is the vocal version of Wookie's "Gallium", "Fallin' Again" (nothing "shady" about it at all BTW!):

winstonian (winston), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

i wanted to start this same thread but for guitar solos after listening to harvey's ministry of sound mix almost every day in 2007 (on a shitty real audio rip natch, if anyone has mp3s i would be eternally grateful!)

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

Haha I was in a band for about five minutes at university and we did a live version of Get Get Down, that piano really brings back memories. I think this came out of drunkenly trying to count the number of times he says 'down' in that record.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 12:58 (seventeen years ago)

Also following on from Tim's post, I am a big fan of this:

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

Heard this (and this specific version of it too) at about 9am at a totally debaucherous dance party about nine years ago, and on a pill. It changed my life:

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah that Maleka tune is fabulous. I refrained from suggesting Crazy Cousinz tracks only because they're actually very subtle in their use of piano - more tinkly than stabby. Even in this one it's only the breakdown that really pushes that sound. But it's not a flaw: it's more like, we've got tricks to spare!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 13:13 (seventeen years ago)

there's another great "down down down down down" house tune from maybe 92 or so that got remixed a million times, with harmonies on the chorus going "doooowwn" and a male singer going "ya got ta be! down down down down down down! (down down down down down down)"

it's an electric piano on the song, but hey

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 13:13 (seventeen years ago)

I never much liked Kylie's "Spinning Around", but when I saw her live she added the piano from CeCe Peniston's "Finally" and it was instant fabulousness. This isn't even quite as amazing as the version I saw but you should still check it:

lex pretend, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

So happy I decided to work from home today!

This is still the definitive piano house tune for me.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

laughing light of plenty - "the rose" has some pretty great piano.. as a taxonomic matter i'd say it falls into the category of "mood setter" though, a la "love love love" by low motion disco, rather than "this is the part where you jump around"

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 13:24 (seventeen years ago)
