cracklin' rosie

PappaWheelie V, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 07:15 (seventeen years ago)

It's a very deep catalogue, and a very difficult choice.

jkfu (libcrypt), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 07:19 (seventeen years ago)

I love how Neil is holding his monster air penis ready for self-fellating on the cover of HAN, tho.

jkfu (libcrypt), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 07:20 (seventeen years ago)

"Cracklin' Rosie" too but...um...I don't think this poll was thought through very well. He simply has too many singles to justify a poll. Also, is the omitted "Cherry, Cherry (Live)" the same as the included one?

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 07:28 (seventeen years ago)

P.S. Lester Bangs wrote a great review of Hot August Night for Rolling Stone (I think).

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 07:30 (seventeen years ago)

I would have made this a 60s-70s ND poll, but I want to hear what folks have to say about his later output.

jkfu (libcrypt), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 07:32 (seventeen years ago)

Cherry Cherry would be my runner up.

PappaWheelie V, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 07:54 (seventeen years ago)

You omitted "Love on the Rocks"?

Mark G, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 07:57 (seventeen years ago)

(and yet, you have a fair few "a and B sides reversed", e.g. "Done too soon")

Mark G, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 07:58 (seventeen years ago)

keep reading this as Neil Diamond: The Shingles

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 08:41 (seventeen years ago)

Among the choices: "Shilo."

Among the nonchoices: "Love on the Rocks."

Joseph McCombs, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 09:39 (seventeen years ago)

"The American Popular Song" is another omission, yes?

I'd probably have voted for "Pretty Amazing Grace" or the Brian Wilson version of "Delirious Love". As it is... hmm... March 31st deadline, you say? Good.

Greatest live performer I've ever seen, BTW.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

"Cherry Cherry" a no-brainer here, but yeah, hard decision nevertheless.

2for25, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

always wondered wtf was up with that cover

goole, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

I have a guilt-ridden fondness for supermarket favorite "Yesterday's Songs" and regret it's not on the list.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

"Cherry Cherry" without a nanosecond's hesitation

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

So many choices, and yet it's "Cracklin' Rosie"

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

I just love Brother Love so much...

JtM Is Ruled By A Black Man (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

I just used Wikipedia's list of the singles for the poll options, FYI.

jkfu (libcrypt), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

Baby TONIGHT by the FIRE all ALONE you and I

Eazy, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

Impossible.

I voted for "Solitary Man" because I think it'll end up under-represented. But the karaoke singer in me cries out for "Forever in Blue Jeans".

Bad Banana On Broadway (kenan), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

The "Maybe tonight" part, you can really ham it up. Good shit.

Bad Banana On Broadway (kenan), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

I did "Forever in Blue Jeans" at a karaoke outing the other night, and at that bridge part there wasn't any clue where that note was supposed to be, and I just got lost.

Whereas someone else did "Love on the Rocks", and it was a case of getting to read the lyrics up close and see how weird and great a song that is. It's like the creepiest and most pathetic voice-mail message ever, but moving too.

"Solitary Man", that's a great one.

Eazy, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

"Walk On Water" - doo wop, bad Irish accents, gospel and more in 3 minutes of bliss. Dear Lord, ain't it right.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

Ooh, forgot about Reverend Bluejeans - that's a good'un! Not gonna change my vote though.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

Too difficult to chose. But, in terms of a-side AND b-side, I Am...I Said/Done Too Soon or, failing that, Done Too Soon/I Am...I Said

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 10:52 (seventeen years ago)

Two claim to be Rosie fans, yet one vote. Exactly WHO is the hypocrite here?

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 02:36 (sixteen years ago)

JtM Is Ruled By A Black Man (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 04:34 (sixteen years ago)

the city of boston ruines sweet caroline for the rest of us

I (still) have never encountered that phenomenon you're alluding to. But I do recall the thread all about it...

Is "Sweet Caroline" An Anomaly In That...

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 06:47 (sixteen years ago)

Strange result. "I'll Come Running" is a very good b-side though.

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Thursday, 2 April 2009 10:19 (sixteen years ago)

three years pass...

man nobody voted in this poll. this guy has one of the most limited songwriting ranges but damn if he isn't awesome anyway.

i may have voted for red, red wine. love that song.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 10:57 (thirteen years ago)

1. "Solitary Man"
2. "Cherry, Cherry"
3. "Sweet Caroline"
4. "You Got to Me"
5. "The Boat That I Row"

clemenza, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 11:20 (thirteen years ago)

"Longfellow Serenade" is a delirious delight.

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)
