Snapshot : Clubbing in Brasilia

I went clubbing here in Brasilia for the first time last night. The venue "Gates Pub" probably the most famous pub / club in the city. It was rock / pop / electronic night.

When I got there it was mainly blandish R'n'B / electro-soul. Rhythms were late 80s / early 90s. The big tune that got everyone dancing was Ace of Bass's "All that She Wants". Then some reggaefied stuff. Unfortunately leading to straight reggae (cool) then rocky reggae (??) then rock indie session. Madchester well represented. EMF's Unbelievable got the crowd going.

Some more indie / rock I couldn't recognise but could have been Boo Radleys mid 90s UK, or US. Then we moved via a Ricky Martinesque latin rock, something skanky (reminded me of Lionrock, but probably was what Lionrock samples) into some hard housey stuff, then house remixes of latin pop. Suddenly the hard housey version of Billie Jean.

Then it got seriously early 90s pop. A hard, fastish mix of "Groove is in the Heart" which I hadn't heard. (At one point I suspected it of being a bootleg.) Then Connected era Stereo MCs; Snap(!); a dirgey remix of "Another Brick in the Wall" which was new to me; something that nicked "Staying Alive" and rapped all over it, but wasn't as good as Wyclef's version; House of Pain's "Jump Around" ... I jumped around, then I went home.

So, I can't say how typical, deliberately retro this set was. Some pleasurable fun. Some moments when I was forced to sit down in disgust.

That Pink Floyd remix is by Hot Coffee (no, me neither). The radio version is a clever collage of elements from Pt.1, "The Happiest Days of Our Lives?" and Pt.2 - I'm surprised nobody thought of doing a dance version of this before. It is a bit "safe" tho' - sort of in the same vein as Jakatta's cover versions. Ha ha I bet Anna Rose would hate it.

Reminiscent of my experiences of going to 'alternative' clubs in Brazil!
