First & Last & Always

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 13 February 2009 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

Floodland

baaderonixx, Friday, 13 February 2009 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

I say this every time the subject comes up so sorry for that but: all suck compared to the EPs

J0hn D., Friday, 13 February 2009 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

Hello J0hn, this is for you:

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

ps: Floodland

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

write-in:
Some Girls Wander by Mistake

ducking kiosk monkey (onimo), Friday, 13 February 2009 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

no - we're talking albums here

baaderonixx, Friday, 13 February 2009 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

Some Girls Wander By Mistake is by far and away the best Sisters album. But if not allowed then Floodland.

Doran, Friday, 13 February 2009 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

The debut, for "Black Planet," but I don't feel all that strongly about it, either way.

xhuxk, Friday, 13 February 2009 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

we're talking albums here

I'd take any EP from Reptile House, Temple of Love, Alice, Body and Soul above any Sisters album but if I have to choose a studio album I'd go for the stupidly huge Steinman inspired Floodland, though the best song on any of them is possibly 'Ribbons' on Vision Thing.

ducking kiosk monkey (onimo), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

^^^^^^ otm

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

(eliminating everything pre-FALAA means they've no chance in the "best goth" poll this is supposed to narrow down to).

ducking kiosk monkey (onimo), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

I'd take any EP from Reptile House, Temple of Love, Alice

Used to own these forever ago, and may well agree with this, too (though still not all that strongly.)

xhuxk, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

I don't see why "Some Girls Wander" doesn't count as an album – that's like cutting "Louder than Bombs" out of a Smiths poll.

i'm shy (Abbott), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

I said this on the other thread, but for me the "Temple of Love" 12" is the definitive SoM object.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

ditto on write in for some girl wander! Otherwise, I'll be contrarian and vote for Vision Thing, which merits a "defend the indefensible" thread ...

sarahel, Friday, 13 February 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

Vision Thing is totally defensible! Even the silly songs like "More" and "Doctor Jeep" are awesome.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

Vision Thing is totally defensible! Even the silly songs like "More" and "Doctor Jeep" are awesome

I think they're awesome, too, partly out of nostalgia - I think I got the album shortly before I got my drivers license and was one of my first driving soundtracks - but it always does the worst in these polls.

sarahel, Friday, 13 February 2009 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

Bahaha those songs were one of my first driving soundtracks too (though I had A Slight Case of Overbombing).

i'm shy (Abbott), Friday, 13 February 2009 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

Another write in, I abstain, etc.

Coffee Table LP's Never Breathe! (Bimble), Friday, 13 February 2009 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

okay, I relistened to some girls wander, and with the exception of temple of love, it isn't as great as I remember it.

candy corn for lunch and dinner (sarahel), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 February 2009 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

"Alice", "Floorshow", "Gimme Shelter", "Heartland" and "Kiss The Carpet" are all great IIRC

honestly, if Some Girls... was included, I would have voted for it, but this "their proper albums are crap" nonsense can just fuck off

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I'm a bit tired of all this jumping the shark biz. 'Some Girls' is cool, but come on - at the end of the day 'Driven Like the Snow' is their best song and the album it's on ain't bad either.

baaderonixx, Friday, 13 February 2009 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

Some girls wander could have been remastered better, it all sounds so thin next to the real vinyl EPs :-/

But yeah, Floodland all the way.

StanM, Saturday, 14 February 2009 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

Some girls wander could have been remastered better, it all sounds so thin next to the real vinyl EPs :-

I think that was my problem with it. I had those songs on vinyl when I first heard them, and the sound quality was significantly different. Thin! Yes, that's it.

candy corn for lunch and dinner (sarahel), Saturday, 14 February 2009 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

hey look dan a huge shock for you i am voting for floodland

From Rax to Rich's (jjjusten), Saturday, 14 February 2009 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

"Floodland"

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 15 February 2009 04:03 (seventeen years ago)

You can probably guess what I voted for.

Vulgar Display of Flowers (J3ff T.), Sunday, 15 February 2009 05:06 (seventeen years ago)

You know, I've been revisiting my collection since this poll was started and Vision Thing isn't half as bad as I remembered it.

StanM, Sunday, 15 February 2009 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

F&L&A always felt a little monochromatic for me, mostly because of the unwavering march of that damn drum machine. Floodland has more interesting beats, "This Corrosion", that piano ballad, some pseudo-guitar solos, and all those synths to help keep monotony at bay.

OffensiveBeard, Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

I BELIEVE is name is Doktor Avalanche.

SUGGEST BAN

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Sunday, 15 February 2009 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

yeah tbh - I always skip Dominion and Corrosion these days

baaderonixx, Sunday, 15 February 2009 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

I've always loved Dominion. This Corrosion, sometimes it's a bit too long, other times I can handle it.

StanM, Sunday, 15 February 2009 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

On the other hand, sometimes I listen to Afterhours four times in a row, so what do I know.

StanM, Sunday, 15 February 2009 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

haha yeah - Afterhours has been rocking my week

baaderonixx, Sunday, 15 February 2009 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

my friends used to listen to Afterhours at 33rpm.
now THATS what i call Goth.

zappi, Sunday, 15 February 2009 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

I still don't really understand how to parse "the kill to show for" in Black Planet: can I has explanation, plz?

StanM, Monday, 16 February 2009 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

my friends used to listen to Afterhours at 33rpm.
now THATS what i call Goth.

Yeah, man. I'm feeling you on this.

Coffee Table LP's Never Breathe! (Bimble), Monday, 16 February 2009 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

I listened to this Bangles single at 33 once and it sounded like Sisters of Mercy!

i'm shy (Abbott), Monday, 16 February 2009 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

I listened to Joy Division's Atmosphere at 33 RPM and I'm still alive somehow!

StanM, Monday, 16 February 2009 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

Floodland. The lyrics got a lot better after FL&A (so many puns and references) and you can feel the influence of the Sisterhood album - all that mechanical repetition and those huge, cold synthesizers. I just love the whole loony grandeur of it - there's a lot of knowing humour in there. Great videos too.

Dorianlynskey, Monday, 16 February 2009 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

System of Mercy

StanM, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

Used to have a copy of Vision Thing on cassette, the only thing of theirs I ever owned/heard (apart from ToL and Corrosion singles on the radio). Downloaded it yesterday and listened to it while cooking - nice! Love the riff on the titletrack, simple and effective. The vocals are very 80/90's Bowie on a lot of the tracks. Which I don't mind a bit.

willem, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

"Ribbons" is so great

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah that one too. When "More" came on I was like "mmmm maybe i should put something else on now" but I let it run and ended up singing "I need all the love I can get" all through the fade-out :)

willem, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

THAT I CAN'T GET TO!!

willem, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

Ribbons is the only vision thing track that i really like. but i love it.

From Rax to Rich's (jjjusten), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

OTM, although I also really like "I Was Wrong", but yeah I need to be in the proper mood for the rest of it. I always thought of Vision Thing as an ironic concept album, the point of which escaped me.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha that is a great description

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

I always thought it was a concept album about American cultural imperialism - all the political/pop-cult references in Doctor Jeep, the devouring excess of More, the Bush Snr quote that supplies the album title, and the raised-eyebrow take on LA hair-metal. Ribbons is obv the best but I have a soft spot for the power ballad, Something Fast. I imagine Eldritch throwing goth shapes late at night in the middle of Sunset Boulevard. I seem to remember Detonation Boulevard sounding a bit crap but I like it as a gasoline-huffing Dylan spoof. It's not a great album but it's conceptually watertight and I respect that.

Dorianlynskey, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

oh man I forgot that I also love "Detonation Boulevard"

srsly I don't know why some bands bypass all of my critical faculties but Sisters of Mercy are definitely one of those bands

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

xp wow I'd never made the connection with Dylan!! wtf boy am I stupid

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

"Detonation bd" and "Dr. Jeep" are for me the two real clunkers on this, which sometimes blur my vision of this album.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

First & Last & Always is neither First nor Last.

Some one else voted for Vision Thing besides me!
