I liked The Crane Wife a lot, at the time. Can't remember much about it now. Proggy, I think.

as someone who used to be a decemberists stan...I'm not sure I am going to make it all the way through.

Huh. Back before my beard I was told by three different people that I looked like Colin Meloy, I never saw it until that picture.

I'm having a hard time with this album. I'm on track 15/17 and still waiting for it to do something to make me like it.

WTF? I just went on pitchfork and the review sounds like they made this album up, it sounds so ridiculous. I hate this band. also thx p4k for ruining wavves for me:( "These aren't shouts from a house party, but from a solitary bedroom." oh shut up already

Guess what? You don't have to read pitchfork. Know what else? You really don't have to read reviews of bands you hate in the first place. Makes life a little easier not to force yourself to sit through things you hate doing. You're welcome.

kk thx pal. i actually love pitchfork now, they have all these live performances of the aformentioned wavves and a bunch of awesome stuff. i really just wanted to hate on decemberists, pitchfork is love/hate for me

"the wanting comes in waves" is actually a good song! but i cant imagine myself wanting to sit through this entire record again

I wasn't really trying to single you out, just never understood why people would force themselves through a review of something they already hate. And yeah, I haven't read the review nor heard the album, but I'm curious to hear how trainwreck-y it is.

i heard a long song off that new decemberists and frankly it sounded more like 5 indie rock songs stitched together...way more "band on the run" than "foxtrot" IMO...or the pussy version of that long song on "american idiot"

Crazy talk on this thread. This is a gem. Caveat: I know nothing about this lot's previous form; they've never interested me remotely. But The Rake's Song hooked me spectacularly, and the discovery of an hour or so of folk-riff craziness going on around it pleases me immensely.

Put it this way: there haven't been many albums of late where I've actually thought, right, I need to sit down and try to work out what the fuck the narrative running through this is all about. And, you know, accordions + riffs = joy.

I still really like this album. The narrative thing doesn't really take off for me until the final third, but theres enough good stuff going on that I could really care less about the "story". I think this is growing into my favorite Decemberists album yet. They played Grant Park in Chicago a couple years ago with an orchestra, I now kinda wished they'd have saved that setting for this album. Would be very cool.

i like this album and will listen to it more.
