xhuxk, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

(and actually, that might be the case with a few side-ending tracks on these tapes. i crossed lots of things out when i retaped songs, then retaped over retaped songs and occasionally scotch-taped changed song titles -- and occasionally you can hear former songs bleeding through, which can sound often pretty cool years later! -- then ran out of room on tape cards, then wound up putting words wherever they'd fit. so none of these are 100% guaranteed accurate.)

Xhuxk, might the Bobby Radcliff song be "Devil In Disguise"?

Frank Kogan, Monday, 23 February 2009 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

If you're lucky, the track that says "Bailando" is, indeed, "Bailando," by Paradisio. If you're only somewhat lucky, the track that says "Bailando" is "Bailando" by Angelina; the former has a shot at my top ten for the Nineties, whereas the latter does not.

Paradisio were a Belgian group, but they sang in Spanish to signal their discontent with the Peace Of Westphalia. I think Angelina is Mexican, but I don't know this for sure.

Only Angelina "Bailando" I could find is this live English-language version in San Antonio.

meisenfek, Monday, 23 February 2009 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know. Which one destroyed more passersby?

might the Bobby Radcliff song be "Devil In Disguise"?

Seeing how that's the only Bobby Radcliff song I've ever heard, I'd say definitely. (Frank knew what the song was because he's the person who taped it for me in the first place -- along with several of these other songs, since a few of these tapes cannibalize tapes that came from Frank; a couple more cannibalize old Scott Seward tapes.)

only putting this here because I had pulled this out recently somewhere else as how I used to use random mixes as a way to find connections. (this mix isn't about choosing the next song, as much as it was about forcing mathematical choices into the collection I had at the time)

xhuxk, Friday, 17 April 2009 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

Loved "Wax Ecstatic" when i was younger, but for the life of me couldn't remember the name of the song or the band. Just listened to it & i'm not really feeling it anymore but it's a relief to not have that eating away at a little corner of my brain anymore.

myndbloom, Friday, 17 April 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

Loved that D Generation album, but never felt the need to get the second, nor to listen to Jesse Malin.

bendy, Friday, 17 April 2009 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

That was on their second album, actually -- No Lunch, from '96. I liked the self-titled debut from '94 at the time (though I was really overrating it), and didn't like much from the two subsequent ones. Malin's solo stuff, inasmuch as I've heard it, has been even duller, though people who have more use for solo Westerberg than I do might like some of it. (Playing that mixtape this morning, though, the D Generation song sounded pretty mediocre. The song that really jumped out at me was the Hoodoo Gurus one, which has a killer hard rock riff, and sounds almost like a missing link between Alice Cooper and White Stripes. Now I'm curious if they did any other songs that good, but as I recall that was the only track I liked off an album that seemed meh to me.)

xhuxk, Friday, 17 April 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

In the 90s, I was happy for anyone who sounded like the Dead Boys- D Generation, Devil Dogs, Dwarves. Dwarves hold up, but the others I haven't re-listened to much.

bendy, Friday, 17 April 2009 19:26 (sixteen years ago)

They all start with D, too!

xhuxk, Friday, 17 April 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

sea train - i'm willin/sally goodin (excerpt)
sea train - orange blossom special (excerpt)

Wow, two Seatrain songs! And edits!!

Such A Hilbily (Dan Peterson), Friday, 17 April 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

Listening to Hoodoo Gurus Blue Cave for "Mind the Spider" I don't remember ever hearing it before, and I've never heard a Hoodoo Gurus song that even remotely resembles this. I love all their earlier work, but never got around to the '90s stuff. There is no indication in the booklet that that isn't Dave Faulkner on vocals either.

Good song though. Sampling the rest of the cd sounds like their typical jangle guitar rock, maybe a little more heartlandy.
