I was kinda reaching by the end there. Having now heard GGD and half of Erykah, regretting Elbow in spadefuls.

(oh and mine's ordered, obv)

awww you should keep posting at the main thread, it was almost reaching "Dave Matthews Band : Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad & Hated." numbers!

lil waynes babymama (musically), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

After my top 5, the order's all really pretty arbitrary. And changes would be made if compiling it now.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

People had browser probs on it.
The full list should have been posted here 1st before individual lists I think so there's easy access to it.

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 01:21 (seventeen years ago)

w/mine, GGD and lil' wayne were shoved down the list deliberately in a vague concession to strategy

we have 2 albums in common

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 01:40 (seventeen years ago)

link to post w/ Foreign Exchange vids. Their sound, as I put it there: ntimate/introspective electronic r&b w/ lots of duet vocals. Sounds kind of like a cross between Air's Pocket Symphony and Aaliyah's self-titled.

I was v. happy with the amount of arguing in the thread. A lot of the past results threads have been rather passive.

i second the encouragement to check out the foreign exchange, especially the gorgeously aqueous 'daykeeper' - i think i heard it way too late for it to sink in before voting time, but it's a v.g. album

Dear everybody, sorry for being occasionally a bit snarky and bitchy, there have been some real discoveries here, especially within the top 6, and perhaps further down (when I get round to checking them) and I mean you no ill feeling. Perhaps I will even grow to love The-Dream, whoever he is. At least, I think it's a he. Don't wanna repeat my Danity Kane faux-pas.

:)

Given a do-over, I'd have The-Dream in there -- probably in my top ten or even five -- and from what I've heard (which isn't a lot yet) the GGD would probably have featured too. But I'm still mostly happy with my list.

Lostandfound, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

where is the LOVE for u.s. girls LP, guys?

i totally spaced on the nominations for this, but I think both Pigeons "Virgin Spectacle" and D Charles Speer & The Helix "After Hours" are really great LPs. Different. The latter is a psychedelicized country rock LP that doesn't play like an alt.country snoozer.

ian, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

Los Campesinos are totally unbearable. What is it with indie pop and cramming everything into the mid-range?

I would much rather listen to hard bop jazz and stfu (The Reverend), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 09:07 (seventeen years ago)

the production doesn't bother me, you can still make out what all the instruments are doing. it makes me appreciate spoon more i guess but it's not a huge deal to me personally

Yeah, something like Spoon I can deal with because there's actually some highs and lows and most of all space and it doesn't sound like total ass.

Ioannis, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

would place Kanye 3rd, Franco 4th and T.I. down a couple in retrospect. also, would cut out the last three to make space for METAL.

Gas is one of my favorite things ever, but I wasn't going to vote for it because it's a reissue. But then I couldn't find a full 20 albums on the noms list that I was crazy about, so I stuck it at #10.

That's Gutter Twins votes there, and it wouldn't even have got that if I'd heard a lot of other stuff before voting (Grouper, Torche, Lindstrom, School of Seven Bells should really have got something from me).

Cure, The - 4:13 Dream

* This was disallowed, obviously: Musically was kind enough to e-mail and see if I had a sub, but I didn't have time to think about it.

Notes, comments etc: I know nobody loved the Fuck Buttons album even half as much as I did, so I'm actually delighted it bubbled under where it did. Johann Johannson was more of a surprise -- really thought that would place.

Hermann: did DeSalvo make an appearance in the metal poll at all? (Yes, I'm too lazy to look.) Great little album, that.

I know A Hoy Hoy suggested the Roots Manuva album "wasn't loved" but I thought it had been well acclaimed enough round these parts to garner a lot more than 38 paltry points.

The ones I'd really urge people to check out are RememberRemember (sample-driven pastoral pop meandering) and Errors (it sounds like Errors, only over the course of an album).

Glenn: to my shame, I've not heard that second FR album yet (I'm sure this is the second time I've typed almost exactly those words in the past month or so) and I'm pretty sure that, if I had, I'd have placed it very highly indeed.

Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

(Also: I'd sort-of forgotten including The Cure on there. I guess it goes to show that your state of mind when you submit your poll counts for a lot. Although not in terms of the Cure's total points, obviously.)

Let's see. In order:

Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull
Gang Gang Dance - Saint Dymphna
Torche - Meanderthal
Zomby - Where Were U In 92?
Harvey Milk - Life... The Best Game In Town
High Places - High Places

Runhild Gammelsaeter - Amplicon
Deerhunter - Microcastle
Atavist / Nadja - Ii: Points At Infinity
Gavin Bryars/Philip Jeck/Alter Ego - The Sinking Of The Titanic
Porn And Merzbow - And The Devil Makes Three

I would have put Sunn0))) in there somewhere if I had heard it before I submitted the ballot. Not sure why Grails is so high - not into that so much on reflection. Can't believe more people didn't vote for Zomby (maybe it came out too late in the year?).

ears are wounds, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Ordered, but still pretty slapdash:
Lindstrom - Where You Go I Go Too
M83 - Saturdays=Youth
Hercules & Love Affair - S/T
Quiet Village - Silent Movie
Studio - Yearbook 2
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
David Byrne/Brian Eno - Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
Kleerup - S/T
Half Man Half Biscuit - Csi: Ambleside
Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak
Arthur Russell - Love Is Overtaking Me
Remember Remember - Remember Remember
D. Lissvik - 7 Trx + Intermission
Betty Botox - Mmm… Betty
Sebastien Tellier - Sexuality
Gang Gang Dance - Saint Dymphna
Âme - Fabric 42
Sun Kil Moon - April

If I were to do it again now, Fleet Foxes would be way lower or gone completely (that album was the constant salvation at work, but on it's own, it gets really dull after about 5 songs). Obviously would have put stuff I just heard on the list (i.e. Grouper) as well Zomby (which I didn't notice on the list...thought it was 2009 actually, I don't know why other than that is when I first heard it).

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

Hey someone else liked the Runhild Gammelsaeter record! It sounded so unlike anything else I've heard I had to put it in somewhere. I really need to hear that Caretaker record.

xpost

I'm pretty sure the Zomby record came out in December as I have a distinct memory of being out record shopping for Christmas and seeing a big stack of them in Rough Trade.

ears are wounds, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

The mister *really* likes the Runhild Gammelsaeter record, but I just can't get into it. There are glimpses of something I'd like here and there, and glimpses of things I'd enjoy just because they're funny, but overall it just doesn't work for me.

Can't remember if Zomby was on my list, think I only listened to it a couple of times before (failing to meet) the deadline.

emil.y, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

It's definitely a weird record; I don't think it will be an all-time classic or anything, but it's interesting when it works.

ears are wounds, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

I love 'Amplicon'. I don't know if it will every be a classic - probably not - but it should be! Despite what you may experience first time around - especially after the first track, which is the most Diamanda Galas-y one - the disorientating sounds slowly make room for something 'united'. Towards the end of the record it suddenly all makes sense.

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

Runhild Gammelsaeter
album is good, but it's no Thorrs' Hammer or Khlyst.

my ordered ballot. Surprised there were so few votes for Marit Larsen; to me the new album is right up there w/ her first, which I thought was pretty popular around here.

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)

Mountain Goats, The - Heretic Pride
Randy Newman - Harps And Angels
Lindstrom - Where You Go I Go Too
Marit Larsen - The Chase
Lil Mama - Vyp: Voice Of The Young People

David Byrne/Brian Eno - Everything That Happens Will Happen Today

Dolly Parton - Backwoods Barbie
Solange - Sol Angel & The Hadley Street Dreams

Ari (whenuweremine), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

I think this was the ballot I sent. Looks like I ran out of steam halfway through.

Portishead - Third
School Of Seven Bells - Alpinisms
Headless Heroes - The Silence Of Love
Hold Steady, The - Stay Positive
Q-Tip - The Renaissance
Half Man Half Biscuit - CSI: Ambleside
Air France - No Way Down

Lykke Li - Youth Novels
Ladyhawke - Ladyhawke

Good to see at least a couple of others voted for Q-Tip.

Can't believe more people didn't vote for Zomby (maybe it came out too late in the year?).

i think the hype for this record came around early this year, even if it was released before then. also, there were some people visibly hating on this record and recommending old hardcore records on the dubstep and bobbins threads. still it's nice to see other people voted for it

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

brainless popcorn (some dude), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

zomby may be gimmicky but there are very few electronic records last year that sound even remotely that fun.

Syclops - I've Got My Eye On You - 15.5

also why is ilm so anti-syclops? i thought everyone loved maurice fulton around here, and he goes and makes an incredible solo album and people aren't into it. i remember reading that some people found it sorta boring, but the album is a total grower.

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

It is sorta boring. I gave it several chances, but it never took.

The Reverend (rev), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

some of the singles are pretty old, so maybe that had something to do with it as well

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, the record isn't littered with his wife shrieking about art and violence this time. which was great, don't get me wrong, but this one's just much smoother. and certainly no more boring than that lindstrom album (which i also dug)

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

The only thing I'd heard by him coming in was "Where's Jason's K?" so I didn't really have much in the way of expectations not to be lived up to. And yeah, more boring than the Lindstrom album, although I don't quite love that one either.

I would much rather listen to hard bop jazz and stfu (The Reverend), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

I really like the Syclops record.
