Split Enz "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" vs. XTC "All You Pretty Girls"

Nautically themed sea-shanty-ish 80s new wave tunes. I loved the xtc song at the time but maybe the production lets it down a bit, the split enz one goes on too long but i think it holds up better than most of that band's stuff.

the song was "discouraged from airplay" in Britain during the Falklands crisis by the BBC for reasons of morale

ffs

Aside from the pretty introduction, "All You Pretty Girls" is annoying as hell.

it's that relatively rare 80s song featuring a mellotron

love XTC, but six months. "when i was a yoooouuuung man, i wanted to sail round the world..." = so beautiful

Best Enz song or middling XTC? Hmmm…

"Six Months." Is that where Ted Leo got the title "The Tyranny of Distance" from? I know he's covered that song in the past.

Mitigating factor: Andy P's Oscar-nomination worthy performance in the All You Pretty Girls vid.

I love both XTC and Split Enz, but neither of these songs are their best ones... perhaps 'Six Months' a bit better.

Not so keen on the "Time & Tide" album in general, but love "Six Months In a Leaky Boat". So I pick that one over the highlight on one of XTC's generally weaker albums.

I love XTC, but I've always thought this song was just plain daft and I'm voting against it. I'd never heard the Split Enz song before, it's alright I guess.

Although XTC are my favourite band, it's like their 100th best song vs one of two or three greatest Split Enz moments. No real contest.
