maps in a fucking landslide

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 04:32 (seventeen years ago)

i love all the singles from show your bones (probably rate them 1. gold lion 2. turn into 3. cheated hearts) and y-control is great too but maps is single of the decade type shit

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 04:34 (seventeen years ago)

I have to agree on Maps being the best they'll ever do but I'll vote Y Control because it was the single that finally made me interested in them (mainly for the kickass video).

Moka, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 04:36 (seventeen years ago)

Couldnt resist the urge to post it here to see it everytime I visit this poll

Moka, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 04:38 (seventeen years ago)

uhhhh where is 'bang'?

'date with the night' surprisingly easily - it just kicks so much ass. i wish more rock music was like that. second place probably 'turn into', that's just gorgeous. 'maps' is so overrated, "oh here is this kick-ass chick whose persona is touch and crazy, and here she is having a cry" - exactly what indie boy critics want to hear

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:19 (seventeen years ago)

*tough, lol

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:19 (seventeen years ago)

that's an odd looking band...

i stopped listening to these guys after a couple of years, but 'maps' and 'pin' really stick with me.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:20 (seventeen years ago)

Maps, though Pin was a close second.

Josh L, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

'maps' is so overrated, "oh here is this kick-ass chick whose persona is touch and crazy, and here she is having a cry"

No Maps is mostly great because of the bit where the enormous guitars crash in. That said I'm voting for Turn Into.

Ein Herz für Briten (Trackpants Tree), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

uhhhh where is 'bang'?
Wasn't a single, but it would have gotten my vote. Went with Maps.

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

Not that this is nearly the best reason to vote for it, but "Maps" also has the excellent "Countdown" and a Peel Session of "Miles Away" on the b-side.

bang was as much of a single as machine!

69, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

it was the lead track of their debut ep, right? that is a single in my book

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

well i mean according to wiki, both are EPs, but "machine" from the machine EP is also a single. i mean, i guess ill go with "y-control"

69, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

Maps by itself.

Date With the Night if it can be assisted by its video.

(I secretly like Turn Into a whole lot, though.)

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

pin. first track i ever heard by them

gman, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

had no idea there was a new single

Comic Book Morbius (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

"Y Control"!

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

'maps' is so overrated, "oh here is this kick-ass chick whose persona is touch and crazy, and here she is having a cry" - exactly what indie boy critics want to hear

This is ridiculously wrong.

"Maps" is great because of:

a) The simplicity of the melodic lines and how they intertwine.
b) The guitar tone of both the drone line and the lead line.
c) The massive, thundering drums.
d) The shimmering guitar arpeggios leading into the final statement of the chorus.

Parsing the song as "lol indieboys watch crazy girl cry" is not only insulting, it's wholly reactionary, unthinking and far more adolescent than the attitude it's decrying.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

"Y Control", but I like The Faint remix better. It's dancier and poppier.

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

(my rant should say "Parsing the appeal of the song...", ugh)

I mean between Maps and that Y Control video (ehich was Spike but still) Yeah Yeah Yeahs might be way cooler/better than the Strokes, Stripes & Hives COMBINED....

I kind of agree with you lex. They are most fun when they rock hard, and prove that an indie band can actually do that. When they do the indie band as indie band thing (guitars set to 'ning ning ning ning', vocalist getting all sensitive on our arses) they could be anyindieband.

moley, Friday, 20 February 2009 04:57 (seventeen years ago)

hi dere super otm in making the post i wld had made if not 4 hangover

johnny crunch, Friday, 20 February 2009 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

also that ada remix of maps is prob my fav song of the last 10 yrs

johnny crunch, Friday, 20 February 2009 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

haha this poll has been running for some time. anyway, i'm pretty sure i've never heard anything from yyy that compared to the majesty of maps (which i'm listening to now), so there's my vote.

phantompenguin, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 00:25 (sixteen years ago)

Maps.

But I considered Cheated Hearts, Y Control and Zero. If they release Heads Will Roll as a single that could be a contender too.

DJ Mr. Face Stabba, M.D. (Whitey on the Moon), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 00:37 (sixteen years ago)

They look so dorky in that photo

DJ Mr. Face Stabba, M.D. (Whitey on the Moon), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 00:37 (sixteen years ago)

I think I voted Pin when this poll was made because I loved it to death and it's the first YYYs song I ever heard, but in reality, I think it's Cheated Hearts.

― k3vin k., Thursday, February 19, 2009 11:51 PM (1 month ago)

OFFTM, completely necessary, because I am voting "turn into" now and probably would have voted "maps" a month ago. love the absolute shit out of both though

k3vin k., Wednesday, 8 April 2009 00:57 (sixteen years ago)

"hysteric" should be the next single, though i suppose "heads will roll" makes a bit more sense

k3vin k., Wednesday, 8 April 2009 00:57 (sixteen years ago)

Hand over heart, "Zero" is a motherfucking monster, as is "Heads Will Roll" when it gets a Hot Chip or Matthew Herbert remix.

I'm crossing over into enterprise (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 00:58 (sixteen years ago)

i'm really considering voting for zero, what a goddamn song.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 01:03 (sixteen years ago)

then again, I love It's Blitz! more than anything they've ever done.

I'm crossing over into enterprise (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 01:03 (sixteen years ago)

Y Control, but it's not an easy choice. Zero, Date With The Night and Down Boy are total killer as well. Maps is a bit overrated in my book. Still a good tune though.
