Byterock: Pop Eats Itself Again?

First off, head to the Village Voice and if you've not already read Jane Dark's piece on 'byterock', the cut-and-paste parody/remix genre sweeping the Napsterised internet ("Oops...The Real Slim Shady Did It Again" etc.) Then come back here and answer the question: is this a silly diversion, or 2000's most important new 'genre'? (And should the likes of Negativland just retire happy now?)

Oh, and what are your favourite byterock raves?

Unfortunately, given that 'byterock' is an even stupider name than 'post-rock,' I must declare the genre already dead by executive fiat.

I quite like 'byterock' - it reminds me of retro computer games where every second company/game/feature name was a crappy pun on 'byte', eg. Bug-Byte, The Byter Bit etc. etc.

To me it sounds like the latest thing dreamed up by the _Rolling Stone_/_Q_ crowd after they foisted 'electronica' on us. BASTARDS!

As to favorite songs, the descriptions have all been enough for me so that I've never needed to seek out the tunes themselves. Which I guess makes it brilliant, since that means it's the only music you don't actually have to listen to to make a judgment on. ;-)

All taken to it's logical conclusion here - http://remixed.overclocked.org

Personally, the jungle take on Bubble Bobble does it for me.

Hmmm... I think "byterock" is a really crap name, and especially inappropriate when applied to "N Sync vs Britney feat Eminem" type songs! ;)

Anyway, what about music done using soundtrackers, which has been going on for years, and includes loads of "unofficial" remixes? There's now even some putting their stuff onto CD... (eg http://www.mp3.com/asm/ ;) )

Michael.

...the more I'm glad 'byterock' as a term never took off. Success!

the real question here is what can we do to ensure that negativland retire UNhappy? haha someone shd release a john oswald record unmixed with anything else and then NO ONE SHOULD BUY IT! oh wait a minute...

is byterock what they foolishly once called bastard pop in the less enlightened days of the past?

byterock wow ok! was this the pre-history word for mash up?

acrobat, Sunday, 24 June 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

It's an annoying term, but not as annoying as "mash-up" (which always sounds to my ears like a British breakfast food)

Hurting 2, Sunday, 24 June 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

Not to mention that it doesn't really involve "mashing up" the tracks as all - it's more like a "slap-together"

Hurting 2, Sunday, 24 June 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

"slap-together" doesn't sound like a British breakfast food?

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 24 June 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

"slap-together" sounds like a British public school activity

Hurting 2, Sunday, 24 June 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

not as good as "plunderphonics"
