Lil Kim vs. Foxy Brown

i don't think either would be in the top 10 female MCs of all time and they both probably set a bad precedent for all the artists that came after them, but still, i'm curious what the results will be here. use any criteria -- best records, best ghostwri- um lyrics, would blap, etc.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
Foxy Brown 13
Lil Kim 12

MC Lyte?
Roxanne Shante?

I wouldn't even consider myself a big hip-hop head and all of these names came to mind without resorting to Google (granted, I am old)

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

ok, kim might be grandfathered into the top 10 just based on how many classic and semi-classic records she's been on, but i dunno, i just hate her voice and even the dope early B.I.G.-penned verses would prolly sound better with his flow.

i'm not saying there's a ton of girl G.O.A.T.s, i just think it's a shame these 2 kinda loom over better MCs who never got established in the same way.

LMA.O. Scott (some dude), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

trina, remy ma, missy elliott, bahamadia, the lady of rage...

In terms of impact/success, I don't see how you CAN'T put both Foxy Brown and Lil Kim in a top 10 female MC list.

Kid Rock's the third biggest selling rapper of all-time, behind 2Pac and Eminem.

^^^this has him down as selling 20 million in the US alone, before the release of "Rock N Roll Jesus" is taken into consideration. So he must be, globally, hitting around 30/35 mill.

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious xkcd comics), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

There was an article online once that listed the 100 biggest selling artists of all-time with references and cross-references (sales figures for artists in India and Russia are obviously harder to come across and verify than the West), but I remember from that it went 2Pac, Mathers, (TLC and Linkin Park techncially both are "rap" acts of a stripe and come here), Kid Rock, Jay-Z.

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious xkcd comics), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

linkin park is more "rap" than kid rock imo

harry s tfuman (and what), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

I think maybe you're right but that Kid Rock has had more "rap" coverage attributed to him over the years?

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious xkcd comics), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

tho i gotta say i didnt know til just now he got signed by d-nice from bdp

paulhw, Thursday, 19 February 2009 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Kid Rock has criticized celebrities for becoming overly involved in politics[21], but he himself endorsed George W. Bush for president in 2004[22], campaigned for Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Mike Bouchard in 2006, and appeared at events with Republican presidential candidate John McCain in 2008.[23]

no Kid Rock here (list is not fully ranked but 2Pac, Eminem and Jay-Z all appear, as does Linkin Park; also no TLC)

Now I'm really curious to know who the top ten selling hip-hop artists of all time are!

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 February 2009 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious xkcd comics), Thursday, 19 February 2009 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

1. Eminem (33 million)

2. 2Pac (31.8 million)

3. Jay-Z (28.8 million)

4. Nelly (20.9 million)

5. Beastie Boys (18.9 million)

6. Outkast (17.3 million)

7. DMX (16.5 million)

8. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (16.4 million)

9. 50 Cent (15.4 million)

10. Dr. Dre (13.3 million)

I honestly don't remember which one; I just remember the timeline as follows:

- cousin moves back to Cleveland after high school
- cousin meets Bone Thugs
- cousin gets promised a record deal
- cousin sings a line on "Mo Thug Family Tree" (starting around 3:15)
- cousin gets pregnant
- cousin moves back home

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious xkcd comics), Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

I rate them about equally as rappers so voted Foxy on basis of ws.

The Reverend (rev), Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

what i most love about kim's flow is her versatility - she's willing to go pretty far in adapting herself to the beat, other rappers &c. she's also a tremendous mimic. what i most love about foxy's flow is probably when she slips into patois.

lex pretend, Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

yeah foxy probably has the best track record of reggae/dancehall crossover shit of any popular rapper ever

LMA.O. Scott (some dude), Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

that's also why i'm kinda extra-excited about nicki minaj - she seems like she can really pick up this badly neglected baton

lex pretend, Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

"yeah foxy probably has the best track record of reggae/dancehall crossover shit of any popular rapper ever'

^^^^^ YES.

I think Kim and Foxy's greatest albums (The Notorious K.I.M. and Broken Silence respectively) are both pretty amazing, especially the latter. I'm sure a lot of their success is tied up in their willingness to expose flesh, but I'm also sure that a lot of the critical dismissals they get are tied up in the same thing.

Tim F, Thursday, 19 February 2009 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

The Notorious K.I.M is not her greatest album....

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 19 February 2009 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

anyway I voted for Kim though I love both of them, Kim has been my favorite FOREVER... Hardcore is a 10/10 classic, La Bella Mafia great album... best female rapper imo even if she doesn't write her shit....

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 19 February 2009 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

la bella mafia > hardcore > naked truth > notorious k.i.m.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

Voted Foxy, mostly for Broken Silence which is the best thing either of them ever did. . . pity her career got kind of derailed after that.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

I think I agree with Lex's ordering of Lil Kim albums. I haven't listened to Hardcore in a while either but it always seemed like she's less there than on her subsequent albums. Sure The Notorious K.I.M. is her most tawdry, garishly technicolour effort, but I think that's how i like Kim.

Agreed that Broken Silence is the best album of any by these two though.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

I got a used copy of Broken Silence off the hype here and a couple other places and liking the singles, but turned out the singles were the only things on it I liked. I ended up fast-forwarding through the first listen and never playing it again.
