And by "ends at Kick" I mean of course "ends at Never Tear Us Apart"

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

"The Stairs" was one of my high school graduation theme songs (the other: Paula Abdul's "Promise of a New Day").

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

"What you need" doesn't get much play now, but that was the breakthrough in the UK.

Mark G, Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

Here too!

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

They kind of had two breakthroughs, didn't they? I have very clear memories of "The One Thing" and "Don't Change" being all over the radio.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I heard "The One Thing" too (and it was their first Top 40 hit), but "What You Need" was a Top Fiver, and it sounded like a real breakthrough. I would hear it sandwiched between "West End Girls," "Let's Go All The Way," and "Rock Me, Amadeus."

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

"What You Need" was a Top Fiver

Everyhit doesn't have it!

If that's a mistake, it's the first one I've found there.

Mark G, Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

"What You Need" was the first song I remember on the radio, but the first time I heard/saw them was the Australian part of the Live Aid broadcast.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

wiki has:

UK Singles Chart 58

Well, I never.

Mark G, Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

Everyhit doesn't have it!

in Amerikay.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Sure, but I'd have guessed top twenty at least, here.

Mark G, Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

lol at wikipedia for teaching me that they released a single called "Dream On Black Girl"

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

Feel sorry for the second disc, it doesn't really stand a chance here.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

(even though large swaths of it are really good as well)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

No shame in Disc Two's game. Disc One could go head to head with Sgt. Pepper in a Rolling Stone poll.

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha what???????

Mr. Que, Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

Okay I love this album to death and even I'm not willing to go that far.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

lol I thought this was the Cure thread

still stand by what I said tho

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

aw do we not do lulz anymore? sorry guys :-(

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

I've never heard "Kiss The Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain)." Is it as good as that title?

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

if i had a choice between putting disc one on and putting on seargeant pepper's it would be inxs no contest!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

Same here.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

I'm with Tracer!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

Well I don't know about anyone else, but when I fall down a mountain, I always kiss the dirt. I don't remember how that song goes, though.

Coffee Table LP's Never Breathe! (Bimble), Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

maybe "good" means something different from "i want to listen to it more"

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

Had Bono died of an OD, Michael Hutchence woulda composed a better elegy than "Stuck In a Song You Can't Wait Till It Ends."

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

fuck, "Kiss The Dirt" is here

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

I've never heard "Kiss The Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain)." Is it as good as that title?

Awesome do-do-dos, not quite "This Time"/"Listen Like Thieves"/"Shine Like It Does" - whole LLT rekd's worth a spin

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

also voted "kiss the dirt," which was my favorite song evah when I was like 11. Also would takes disc 1 (and possible disc 2) of this over sgt. peppers (though this is partially because I really dislike sgt. peppers).

Dr. Johnson (askance johnson), Thursday, 19 February 2009 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

Don't know if I'd go as far as voting for it, but I like 'Heaven Sent' a lot. It was weirdly unsuccessful - first thing from their new album at a time when they seemed like the biggest band in the world, fashionably murky sound, loads of airplay - but only just scraped the top 40

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 19 February 2009 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

Heaven Sent was the kind of "rock" song they hadn't done since Red Red Sun or Don't Change, uptempo straight 4/4 with lots of cymbals and big moments, and by 1993 that wasn't what the public at large wanted from INXS (although I found it refreshing).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 February 2009 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

Full Moon, Dirty Hearts, like Songs of Faith and Devotion, is the sound of a band too in love with Achtung Baby.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2009 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

Though admittedly Songs had the advantage of improving on its model. But I could go on...

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 February 2009 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

I like every song on this up to "Not Enough Time". "Beautiful Girl" is my pick, their last great single, and their best.

what you know about hat? I know all about hat. (edwardo), Friday, 20 February 2009 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

on the locked poll i said i'd vote for "don't change," but actually i'm conflicted. "don't change" sounds like some great new wave one-hit wonder, but not particularly like inxs per se (i.e. not the quasi-funky dance-rock stuff that really made them big). excluding "don't change," i'm down to the two "need" songs. will ponder it.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 20 February 2009 02:21 (seventeen years ago)

or possibly "devil inside." hmm.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 20 February 2009 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

hmm... it's still a monster though...

"To Look At You" might get my vote it if not for the weak (but quasi-funky) bridge. Torn also on "Shine Like It Does" and "Not Enough Time." Strangely unmoved by all the monster stuff off Kick, except maybe "Need You Tonight" - WITHOUT "Mediate"...

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 20 February 2009 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

"Suicide Blonde" seems to have reversed the riff of "Need You Tonight."

i'm shy (Abbott), Saturday, 21 February 2009 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

All these years later I still don't know whether I like "Suicide Blonde." I love the harmonica and riff, but the lyrics don't GO anywhere.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 21 February 2009 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

I find "Suicide Blonde" guilty of faking the funk.

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Saturday, 21 February 2009 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

This Time. Killer tune, dude.

I actually saw them at the Meadowlands in 1990. they were great.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 21 February 2009 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

on the locked poll i said i'd vote for "don't change," but actually i'm conflicted.

I'm not: Don't Change, in a walk. Far more good songs by this band than I remembered, tho.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 21 February 2009 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

eventually went for 'Never Tear Us Apart', because of this^

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 21 February 2009 10:31 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 28 February 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

This Time. Killer tune, dude.

Indeed. Also tempted to vote for Shine Like It Does and To Look At You, because they're also killer tunes that no one will vote for.

But I'll probably vote for Don't Change...

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Saturday, 28 February 2009 00:48 (sixteen years ago)

Woulda voted for "The Stairs" if it were the studio version.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 28 February 2009 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

a cd (or 2 probably) of the first 25 tracks here would be a pretty darn good listen (tho i'd skip a few of the later tracks)

w/ sax (electricsound), Saturday, 28 February 2009 02:49 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 1 March 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

well, the best man won... but not one vote for "shine like it does" ;_;
