_The Altogether_: Classic or Dud?

I just downloaded some audio clips off of Loopz.co.uk because I needed an Orbital fix at work. I got a minute blast of "Illuminate" and suddenly realized that it was FUCKING INCREDIBLE song. I need to get back home and listen to disc 1 of _The Altogether_ because I'm thinking that time and lack of exposure has allowed that album to sink in to the point where I love it as much as I love their other albums.

Anyone else have a change of opinion on this album? Is it a slow-grower?

With the exception of the first and last songs, it's awful, boring tripe. But rather than retype my entire opinion ...

If you can't hear the melodic loveliness inherent in "Illuminate" you are letting David Grey hate plug your ears.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought it was great from day 1. i mean it certainly isn't their best offering, but still

dyson, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's dreadful, Illuminate is the worst song Orbital has ever done and this record is a (bad) joke. And I used to be an Orbital fan. The only good thing about it is the Plump DJs remix of Funny Break, which isn't on the album (obviously).

JoB, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, WHY is "Illuminate" a dreadful song?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't understand the animosity toward this album, really I don't. I agree with Dan, Illuminate is a great pop song....as is Funny Break, those are the two most obvious tracks, but I find that the rest has grown on me as well. As I've said before, I find it a very concise, punchy album.

patrick, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

illuminate is a bad example of what orbital can do. "waving not drowning" for some reason, i can't get enough of.

dyson, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's manly chest-hair singing, a forceful vocal that is totally unfitting for Orbital's music. They used to do great thiings with Kirsty Hawkshaw and Alison Goldfrapp, where the vocals are swept up in the sound.

JoB, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"manly chest-hair singing"????? David Grey sounds so fey on that song he's practically in a dress!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wuv Dan because he likes Orbital and Underworld and all else that is good.

DAN SEE THE LAYO AND BUSHWACKA THREAD.

(also have you heard the new Underworld, it's very dubnobasswithmyheadman meets muzikizum, not as fantabulous as their past work but still going to be very good from what I've heard, obviously without Darren Emersons holy touch they can never be quite the same)

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the most exciting Underworld news I have ever heard. *drool*

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, realise: DAVID GREY IS A STUPID TWAT. Whys and wherefores don't really come into it.

Tim, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, listen to wisdom: get this album! I did the same as you: downloaded "Illuminate" early last year, loved it and wanted more. So, when I was still solvent, I splurged and got the 2 disc "limited edition". (The second disc is a fair mix of Bsides and remixes, but still cool.)

Faves on this CD, so far: 1) "Tootled": The fact that it samples Tool had no sway on my preference;>; 2)"Doctor?": old "Doc Who" memories...;3) "Funny Break (One Is Enough): sweetest chill-out song I'd heard in ages.

If you don't like it, at least I can't be found. Heh;>

[Another recommendation from them: "Belfast". Had to go on Audiogalaxy to hunt this down, but an absolute gem.]

Nichole: I already have it! I just hadn't listened to it in months and I didn't have it with me at work when I was jonesing for some Orbital.

Tim: Morrissey is also a twat, yet I love most of the stuff that The Smiths have put out. Maxwell is King Twat XXXI, yet his version of "This Woman's Work" is incredible. I don't think that "Illuminate" would work half as well without Grey's vocal cutting through those lovely synth burbles.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"pay per veiw" is yet another great track on the altogether that no one's mentioned yet. the second disc, i feel, is just as good too.

dyson, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Pay Per View" goes without saying, I think. I knew I was going to go out and buy the album after I heard "Funny Break" and "Doctor ?", but hearing "Pay Per View" made me leave work early to pick it up.

The second disc is great, but I already had all of the tracks on it between singles and MP3s.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Grrr, you all are making me want to get this album which I swore I wouldn't get. How annoying when people come around on albums.

New Underworld?! Where, where?

Vinnie, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud. It was a very disappointing album for me. I pretty much like their other records. This one sounded very forced, the rhythms are real clunky and the production sounded way overdone.

I traded off my copy a few weeks back.

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic and Dud in almost equal measure. Funny Break and Meltdown in particular are classic (and the 30 minute DVD version of the latter is BEYOND classic), and a few other tracks have their moments (notably Last Thing, Oi! and Dr?) but at other times it's terrible. The jokes just aren't very funny after a couple of listens (see Waving Not Drowning) and Pay Per View is just plain boring. I would love to be able to expunge Illuminate from the Orbital catalogue - it just doesn't work - David Gray's vocals seem grafted on and completely unecessary, although the live vocodered version is kind of cool. As a whole I think the album is cool if you use the skip button liberally, but I never listen from start to finish. And it's not a patch on any of their previous material.

But The Altogether era is over now - take a listen to Technologiski Park, a new track that'll appear on the XXX soundtrack... proper STORMING old-school Orbital Brown Album/Middle of Nowhere stuff. A real return to form that everyone should listen to as soon as possible.

nine years pass...

Revive.

This review of Wonky - http://www.fmvmagazine.com/?p=6627 - posits The Altogether as "known for its raw, challenging edge". I've not listened to it in probably a decade; is it due a reevaluation?

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 30 March 2012 10:16 (thirteen years ago)

"raw" as in undercooked, "challenging" as in challenging to like, "edge" as in borderline.

Tim F, Friday, 30 March 2012 10:30 (thirteen years ago)

I seem to recall Funny Break (One Is Enough) being very pleasant in a focus-group-designs-an-Orbital-single way.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 30 March 2012 10:33 (thirteen years ago)

I seem to recall thinking the vocals were rubbish.

ledge, Friday, 30 March 2012 10:35 (thirteen years ago)

I mean I love - who doesn't - the inventive and wonderful wordless or at least impenetrable vocals in Halcyon and Sad but True. Funny Break was just some shit rhyming couplet repeated ad nauseam, with some wailing in the background.

yep - I always loved that track. not as immersive as their past attempts in that vein but it's a lot catchier. the Altogether isn't really a terrible album. if you combine the two discs there's probably a solid hour of good material. and "Tension" is pretty damn amazing.

There shouldn't be any words on Orbital tracks but Funny Break does better than most. The only other tracks I have any interest in going back to are Meltdown, which is fantastic, the Doctor Who thing and Last Thing.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 30 March 2012 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

the tracks on disc 2 that aren't remixes are all pretty good. wish they were on the actual album.
