This ends quite nicely on the last Fontana single.

A bunch of hitbound tracks? I think so...

Have only heard about half of these, and don't know a lot of the B-sides, but of the ones I know I'd go with "Free Range."

thunda lightning (clotpoll), Friday, 20 February 2009 09:57 (seventeen years ago)

'Telephone Thing'.

I'm utterly powerless when that bassline drops.

Millsner, Friday, 20 February 2009 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

White Lightning, for Blood Outta Stone.

woofwoofwoof, Friday, 20 February 2009 10:54 (seventeen years ago)

haven't heard all of these, but I like Jerusalem and Wrong Place, Right Time, so I voted that.

Dr. Johnson (askance johnson), Friday, 20 February 2009 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

they had not counted on ...

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Friday, 20 February 2009 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

I'd like to hear Telephone Thing again. It's been way too long and I do remember that bassline. Still, I'm going for High Tension Line as "Don't Take The Pizza" was mega classic Fall (complete with a nice gothicness as well) and worth the price of the Shiftwork expanded CD alone. The A-side of that single was pretty strong, too.

The Blood Is Black (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Friday, 20 February 2009 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

its hit the north

because it goes; 'hit the north'

and thats amazing

Sandy Blair, Friday, 20 February 2009 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I'm going "telephone thing"

when do we get to "birmingham school of business school"?

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 20 February 2009 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

telephone thing just beats hit the north, but just barely

akm, Friday, 20 February 2009 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

Man, they really went downhill. The best tracks here are barely as good as the worst ones in the last poll. But anyway...."Hit The North," I guess.

xhuxk, Friday, 20 February 2009 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

when do we get to "birmingham school of business school"?

I don't think that was ever a single. It is, however, stupendously awesome.

chuck sadly otm...the second disc of 50000 Fall Fans is kinduva drag compared to the first one...High Tension Line (my vote) is good, and I've grown to love Feeling Numb and Free Range, but its not until Touch Sensitive that that disc begins to pay dividends...

still the Fall's Trouser Press article makes The Knight The Devil and Death out to be one of the greatest songs ever written by a member of the homo genus, and Guest Informant is a barrelful of awesomeness...

God, "Twister" is fucking me up right now. I haven't heard these b-sides in a long ass time. When I left my parents' house in 1995 I did take a fair amount of Fall, but any 12" b-sides got left behind.

Coffee Table LP's Never Breathe! (Bimble), Saturday, 21 February 2009 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

I can't remember what the hell was on that damn Domesday Payoff Triad thing, either and it's really bugging me.

Coffee Table LP's Never Breathe! (Bimble), Saturday, 21 February 2009 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

I agree about '50,000 Fall Fans' being a bit of a drag for stretches of Disc 2. Oddly enough, the Peel Sessions box doesn't seem to suffer in the same way, despite having an even greater preponderance of post-'87 material. On a 14-hr flight back around the new year, I remember listening to the whole set straight through for the first time and being pretty impressed with how well the '90s stuff held up.

Millsner, Saturday, 21 February 2009 03:47 (seventeen years ago)

Free Range is my favourite Fall single of all time, from my favourite Fall album of all time, so ... that.

sonofstan, Saturday, 21 February 2009 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

Ed's Babe is just so strange. Every time I listen to it. And The Knight, The Devil, The Death is great as well. So I'm going for that even thought it should really be Jerusalem.

Acid Priest 2080 is fucked up little clockword gem of a temporal box puzzle, as well. Actually should really have voted for that, but it's Ed's Babe.

Hit The North, but Victoria and White Lightening have the best B-sides.

I do like -

I am desolate. I live the black and blue of the night.
Friend depression comes now and again,
Once in a blue moon, it points backwards THUS.

All Night Party Of Goth (Bimble), Monday, 23 February 2009 12:08 (seventeen years ago)

This is the thread where I learn that the lyrics are not "talking like a thesaurus" but "talking like I've got Tourette's / and everything hurtz". Which makes more sense, but is less pleasing somehow.

a passing spacecadet, Monday, 23 February 2009 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

I've alwiz heard it as Tourette's. Sorry.

Abbe Black Tentacle (GamalielRatsey), Monday, 23 February 2009 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

My comment makes more sense if you read the lyric quote in MESish

Sandy Blair, Monday, 23 February 2009 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

passing on this one, cuz too many of these are unfamiliar. would vote for "cab it up" or "jerusalem", but that seems unfair, somehow. fall requires troo dedication

Gothy McGoth (Bimble), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

was just listening to the peel session of New Puritan on BBC6 last night from 1980 (except the presenter insisted on calling it new face in hell). Fucking hell. It reminded me some of their best stuff was done for peel. The version of Hip Priest is particularly devastating.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

There was a period when everything they did for Peel was better than the released versions, IMO

Queueing For Latchstrings (Tom D.), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

The version of Hip Priest is particularly devastating.

It is. The early versions of Hip Priest, especially the one on the Leeds dvd that came with the Perverted by Language bis reissue, are so sparse and primal. It doesn't even really sound like music. Incredibly powerful.

Abbe Black Tentacle (GamalielRatsey), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

I just love scanlan's guitar on that one

Still More Goth Than Your Cat's Asshole (Bimble), Monday, 2 March 2009 01:07 (sixteen years ago)

The weird thing about their cover of "Victoria" is that they chop off the first line of the first verse. Instead of "long ago, grass was green, sex was bad, called obscene" they just start off with "It was bad, called obscene." I'm guessing MES made a special point of not listening to the original recording, so they wouldn't be influenced by it.

Maltodextrin, Monday, 2 March 2009 05:11 (sixteen years ago)

That's apparently what happened with their remarkable cover of War. They had the Henry Cow sleeve with the lyrics but no record. So they just made the music up. To great effect.

Abbe Black Tentacle (GamalielRatsey), Monday, 2 March 2009 07:25 (sixteen years ago)

And the single version of "I can hear the grass grow" has it as "I hear rainbows in the evening", even though they get it right more often on the Peel Sessions version.

(i.e. "I see rainbows in my arp faust"

Mark G, Monday, 2 March 2009 08:25 (sixteen years ago)

Hit The North gives me goosebumps, it really does. But if you put it up against Cruiser's Creek then the universe might explode.
