Yanni vs Kitaro

Let's quit fucking around. The 800 pound gorilla in the ILX room is Yanni vs Kitaro. Both make completely unnecessary and histrionic cues to their fellow musicians. Neither one can read music. Both are unfathomably wealthy. Choose wisely. Here is some vital info:

Yanni, whose real name is John Y. Christopher, was arrested on a first-degree misdemeanor charge of domestic battery after girlfriend Silvia Barthes, 33, called 911 from a bathroom during an argument. When authorities arrived, she said the musician had shaken and slapped her, then threw her on a bed and jumped on her when he ordered her to move out of his $7.7 million oceanfront home, according to the police report. Her lip was swollen and bloody, according to the report, but she told officers she thought she might have hit herself when Yanni shook her. Yanni admitted arguing with his girlfriend but denied striking her. He claimed Barthes kicked him during the scuffle.

Kitaro is very modest. "Nature inspires me. I am only a messenger," he has said. "To me, some songs are like clouds, some are like water".On the day of the full moon of August he beats on the Taiko drum from dusk to dawn. Frequently his hands become bloodied, but he continues to pound. From 1983 until 1990 Kitaro was married to Yuki Taoka. Yuki is a daughter of Kazuo Taoka, godfather of Yamaguchi-gumi, the largest Yakuza syndicate.

Bump for new Yanni vs Kitaro answers

Yanni is the Kenny G of New Age, Kitaro is the Zen Master, AND he has ties to the Yakuza. Is the answer in any fucking doubt?

I'm hoping for a Coppola vs. Pizza style washout here.

Yanni just looks like an... ugh...

I've not heard any solo Kitaro, but he gets my vote for being on the amazing Far East Family Band records. Love those swooshy synths, twangy sitars-guitars and chant-along lyrics.

Serious, non-snarky question re: "Neither one can read music.": why does this matter particularly?

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 16:04 (ten years ago)

I seriously can't believe Yanni garnered 3 votes -- these guys are not even in the same class; better to do a vote of Yanni vs John Tesh
