I chose not to include "Into The Groove", as it wasn't on the original and isn't on the recent remastered edition either.

Although I do have a soft spot for "Material Girl", I voted for "Pretender" instead. A great underrated track that maybe sounded more like something from the debut album than from this one.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 23 February 2009 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

I listened to this last night. I voted for "Angel" -- it's rarely mentioned as one of her great singles, but, wow, pizzicato Nile Rodgers guitar + pre-opera lessons undersinging = yum.

The second side is neither here nor there.

The "Over and Over" remix on You Can't Danceis fuckin' great too.

'dress you up'!

Leaving off "Into the Groove" is far, seeing as how that's what would've gotten my vote. In its absence, I'm torn between "Material Girl" and "Dress You Up."

Teenage Fanclub ruined me on the original "Like a Virgin," making me prefer their cover.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 February 2009 08:39 (seventeen years ago)

xp- yeah "into the groove" is bar none my favorite madonna song, didn't know it was ever included in this album??

i haven't heard the non-singles from this album, but i highly doubt there is anything as powerful and energizing as "material girl", so it obv gets my vote...

Tracer Hand, Monday, 23 February 2009 10:19 (seventeen years ago)

Angel a close second, though.

All Night Party Of Goth (Bimble), Monday, 23 February 2009 10:20 (seventeen years ago)

I second the greatness of the Teenage Fanclub cover of LaV.

Cunga, Monday, 23 February 2009 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

"material girl" almost shouldn't count as an option -- it's on such a totally other level of greatness

i think i remember it being popular at the same time as "break my stride" by matthew wilder

Tracer Hand, Monday, 23 February 2009 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

i love "dress you up," but "material girl" was so many things at once -- a great, smart, funny pop song; the first full flowering of maddy's self-mythologizing ambitions, especially in the video; and perfectly, cynically emblematic of the reagan junk-bond boom years. it drove liberals sort of crazy, but as social commentary i think it stands up as well as "pink houses" or "my hometown" or whatever.

"My Hometown" and "Material Girl" = great double-sided single.

sorry to clutter madonna's thread with that, i just seem to remember somebody at the time doing an imitation of "my hometown" in their standup comedy act which at the time i thought was delightful, can't remember who it was now though

Tracer Hand, Monday, 23 February 2009 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

xp- yeah "into the groove" is bar none my favorite madonna song, didn't know it was ever included in this album??

Because it had yet to be written/recorded at the time of the album's release. :)

When they chose to include bonus tracks on the remaster, they could have included it at the end as a bonus track though.

Speaking of bonus tracks, I love the 12 inch mix of "Like a Virgin". It makes it much better to me than the original. That pling-plong tune in the background of the chorus is sooo great!

Geir Hongro, Monday, 23 February 2009 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

I went with "Dress You Up". "Material Girl" is epic of course, but it's not particularly sexy, there's too much irony going on (the video's a somewhat different story). But "Dress You Up": yeah, the salvation she offers is just a remake of your style, but it's your style, she wants to remake you rather than someone else. So maybe you're nothing but your style, but at least you're the one getting those velvet kisses.

"Dress You Up" vs "Angel"

I hated the non-singles on this album so much when I first heard them that I actually never played them again and couldn't tell you how any of them went to save my life.

i got confused and humped the nachos (kenan), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 05:39 (seventeen years ago)

yes, definitely either Dress You Up or Love Don't Live Here Anymore. Prolly Dress You Up.

still obsessed with this album cover. just look at her.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

plz elaborate

kenan, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

the HAIR. the gorgeous sultry face and eye makeup. the DRESS. the curves on her body.

who could hold a candle to that?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 08:59 (seventeen years ago)

it's just such a huge perfectly elegant monstrosity of woman, set in that lovely Basic Instinct shade of champagne.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:02 (seventeen years ago)

I guess. I still keep noticing the baseboards in the background. So it's Madonna laying on the floor in a sea of organza.

kenan, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:04 (seventeen years ago)

lol. well what about that doesn't sound perfect?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

You have your Madonna, I have mine.

kenan, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

PS madonna's face at the vanity fair oscar party looked younger than mine

Surmounter, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

now i'm second-guessing myself tho. material girl over dress you up?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:10 (seventeen years ago)

that was definitely what broke my madonna virginity, in a huuge way.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:11 (seventeen years ago)

geir can i just say thank you for "polled for the very first time"

its gotta be HOOSy para steen (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:28 (seventeen years ago)

yea that was good, sounds like a mid-joint epiphany

Surmounter, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:40 (seventeen years ago)

now i'm thinking i have to go for like a virgin, for the synths alone. this is very difficult. very.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

weird I've had 'material girl' in my head all week

akm, Friday, 26 February 2010 22:00 (sixteen years ago)

yea def like a virgin

Surprised it didn't win, or rather that Material Girl did. The top four are all fantastic though.

DavidM, Friday, 26 February 2010 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

as a guy who thinks "Dress You Up" >>>all other early Madonna, I am totally outraged by the results here

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Friday, 26 February 2010 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

ditto

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Friday, 26 February 2010 22:18 (sixteen years ago)

“She’s fantastic, I knew she’d be a star.”
“She could be, she could be great, she could be a major star.”
“She is a star, George.”
“The biggest star in the universe, right now as we speak…”

Madonna has such fucking balls back then, and wit. fewer pop songs are more downright sinister/camp than this. and it was so much more endearing than the etheral girl/material mom crap we've been laboured with since '98.
