Soul Jazz Dynamite! series poll

100% was pretty much my intro to reggae deeper than marley and burning spear but aside from "armagideon time" and "rock steady" not that much memorable any more.

200% had so many great tracks on it - "no no no", "ring the alarm", "heatwave", "funky kingston", "herb man dub" - deffo in the running

300% somehow got more diverse without getting better - "make it reggae" next to "sleng teng" next to "bam bam"

400% was the killer for me. EVERY TRACK was killer. "dreader than dread", "no no no" remix, "under mi sensi", "54-46", "chairman of the board", "cuss cuss" ... so many INDISPENSIBLE tracks, trakc sthat became part of my life after i heard them - esp the ones named above.

everyone agrees 500% was a drop in quality and 600% a slight recovery.

dynamite style doesn't really belong here, it belongs on t/s: "dynamite style" vs "dancehall!" vs "nice up the dance" vs "england story" vs "box of dub" etc etc

OTM on this, plus 400% was the first one I stumbled upon, so it gets my vote pretty handily. We Are Not the Same by The Cimarons is the great, lost Motown hit that never was. I really love that track.

voted 300% - first reggae cd i ever bought and it's still excellent. So diverse, the other comps pail in comparison.

why did they stop making these?!?!

500% was good, but way too short!

i have to go for 300% for introducing me to "under me sleng teng".. i also love love love "sister nancy"'s "bam bam" off of that...

winstonian (winston), Monday, 23 February 2009 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

they stopped because they got a sweet licensing deal with studio one, so it made more sense for them to do the "studio one" series

they are coming out with 100% NYC Dynamite soon, it is all raggamuffin hip-hop stuff. there's a cover of "informer" on it.

i also love love love "sister nancy"'s "bam bam" off of that...

Yeah me too - 300% was the 1st one I listened to and remains a fave.

100% NYC Dynamite is awesome.

400% is my vote on this (300% would be second.)

Someone pointed this out on a different thread, but I'll reiterate: The sound on these comps is SO much better than the Trojans. They really thunder from the speakers.
I prefer 200% myself. Hopeton Lewis' "Sounds & Pressure" is killer.

Trojan doesn't do a very good job at remastering :(

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

voted for 200%

is there a thread on the fly girls comp. yet?

eman, Friday, 27 February 2009 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

No! Is it worth it? It's on sale at Ernie B's and I've been debating whether the stuff I have on it outweighs the stuff I've not heard at all.

Alex in SF, Friday, 27 February 2009 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

depends on what you've heard on it
