Did I miss the new Bowie album thread? If not, this is it. It's missing that Reeves Gabrels touch, but it has the Tony Visconti touch back. I'm not sure what to think about it yet, It sounds pretty good so far.

This is the best news I've heard in a long time.

and here is doomie's thread about the new record. I'd still like to know what Pixies fans think of "Cactus".

Where does Heathen stand now? Because I rather like it.

three weeks pass...

Listening to Heathen this afternoon and while it's a little heavy on cover tunes the original tracks are surprisingly great. This album always gets grouped with Reality which always struck me a little more tossed off than Heathen. Sounds like Bowie spent awhile working on it.

Everyone Says Hi is so lovely and sweet and melancholy, it makes me grin like an ELO song. "And your big fat dog."

Heathen was the first CD of his I bought new, and 5:15 Angels Have Gone is a sentimental favorite. I heard a radio interview w/ Bowie at the time (along with Moby? I guess they were touring together), and it did indeed seem like he had put a lot of time and thought into that record. I seem to remember it being somewhat heralded (in a low-key way) as a return to form at the time. Somewhat covers-heavy, yeah, but the songs work well together imo.

'Afraid' is so good. I like how a lot of these songs feel like ballads with double-time beats.

yeah, one of my favorite bowie albums certainly. I like it much more than Reality. REgret missing his live show for this which also featured all of Low.

Very interesting choice to cover "I've Been Waiting for You" off the first Neil Young album. I actually thought this was an original when I first picked up Heathen. This was also my first current Bowie purchase and I dare say a good album get a nice sampling of everything Bowie.

five months pass...

While many people deservedly love Blackstar's "I Can't Give Everything Away," I may prefer "Heathen (The Rays)" as Bowie envoi to the world.

Add in "Heat" from The Next Day and you've got three album closers in a row that could also be some kind of farewell.
