I miss them a lot

hom, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I kinda miss that Ethan dude posting on ILM. How's it going?

bleh, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they don't need to, Sum 41 will do it for them.

jk, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, because "Fat Lip" = "Integalactic". Pft, jeez.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And to answer the question, I think they're busy (a) sort of recouping from the Grand Royal collapse and (b) building a new studio (note: originally typed this reflexively as 'building a new stupid'- a return to the Licensed to Ill roots?). Just so long as their new album doesn't have Chali 2na on it I guess I'll be happy.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seeing as how their albums get worse and worse, i can hardly wait

Ron, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

their albums don't get progressively worse! they go: licensed to ill (crap. but i haven't heard it) - paul's boutique (good) - check your head (haven't heard) - ill communication (good.ish) - hello nasty (crap). if check your head is crap, then the next album will be good!

minna, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

geez, c'mon minna don't dismiss records you've never even heard! I think their releases (eps included here) *have* been getting progressively worse, and frankly, they really dropped the ball over the last 10 years. Grand Royal was a disaster - releasing crap records by their friends that *no one* wanted to hear, while the magazine was neglected and turned into a joke after only a couple issues - their entire MO of rap/rock has been completely co-opted and subsumed by bands who are much MUCH worse than them, no one wants to hear about MCA's stupid buddhist shit, etc. I would rate the albums: Licensed to Ill (great - this record is on a par with anything else Def Jam was putting out at the time, and is classic old school shit), Paul's Boutique (their masterpiece), Check Your Head (great - totally came out of left field), Ill Communication (more of Check Your Head and thus way more boring), and Hello Nasty (blah - a last ditch grasping for credibility). In between there were totally pointless "hardcore" records, ill-advised remixes and reissues, and silly side-projects. They've blown it. I think they've lost their focus (and relevance) entirely...

Shaky Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I'd buy any of their full-lengths, but the best- of/outtake compilation, Sounds of Science, is a fun listen with a fairly high hit-to-miss ratio.

o. nate, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Mike D's solo record ever come out?

What about the Latch Brothers?

Steve K, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't the boffo greatest-hits package universally understood as an admission (possibly unconscious) that they are over.

Lee G, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

considering all their albums are still in print and they already had another collection (the totally unnecessary all-instrumental collection "The In Sound From Way Out"), I'd say that yeah, putting out the Sounds of Science was like carving their own headstone.

And has anyone SEEN Mike D nowadays? Dude looks fucking scary! All gaunt and raspy...

Shaky Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

c'mon minna don't dismiss records you've never even heard!

Amen. Not only is this practice indefensible, but "Liscensed to Ill" is a fantastic record.

Sean, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's harsh ... I never heard Paul's Boutique so I can't comment. "Check your Head" was excellent. I agree about "Ill Communication". "Hello Nasty" has brilliant material. Intergalactic, Remote Control etc. rock. I say it's the best Big Beat album of the late 90s. Also I like when they get all Buddhist and write bossa nova songs. I think a non-hip-hop Beastie's album would be really interesting. What they could do with is either writing more interesting raps, or doing more instrumentals. The old skool lyrics have been wheeled out once too often. But they have it in them to surprise us all again.

phil, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The first two are classic - what was Eric B's remark after hearing Paul's Boutique - "we could steal like five albums off of this". The others have undeniable highpoints and undeniable filler. Hello Nasty is no better or worse than Check Your Head.

J Blount, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Intergalactic" only works when the vocals are bootlegged and put over other beats.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why bother with Licensed to Ill when you can just put on "Goin Back to Cali"? It saves a good 30 minutes or so.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

put me on record as liking Ill Communication better than Check Your Head--same concept, better songs, and I HATE "Pass the" friggin' "Mic"

M Matos, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ill Communication has better singles, but Check Your Head is a better album. It stills feels really fresh, it makes the whole "hey, we can play hip-hop but use live instruments and toss in a hardcore song and it all works" thing still seem exciting.

Jordan, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't listen to Ill Communication all the way through. With your Check Your Head, I don't have that problem. Paul's Boutique though - I cannot stress how great this album is to me. Surely it's some sort of peak in hip-hop sampling production - it's just so fucking DENSE, it takes the po-mo aspect of hip-hop's cross-cultural re- appropriation to ridiculous extremes, and not just in the musical production, but in the lyrics and the rhymes as well. This album just expanded the vocabulary of hip-hop so much - it was less of an expansion and more of an explosion. The only other albums in its league in that respect were the early Native Tongue albums and PE's "Nation of Millions". It's a smart, funny, kaleidoscopic record that's solid from beginning to end. Anyone whose a Beasties fan who hasn't heard this record is cheating themselves of a large piece of the puzzle...

Shaky Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry folk, obviously i was being stupid :)

what i trooly rooly think: beastie boys should only be allowed to release singles from now on. hopefully they can drop all the 'uplifting' nonsense that made 'alive' so boring, and be returned to their witty nasty selves. but i'm afraid they might just be getting too old and mellow. why did they call their last album 'hello nasty'? it should have been called 'goodbye nasty' because it was very nice.

minna, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, that's very odd...
I could never rate Check Your Head due to the amount of stupid fillers it had throughout. I guess it's because I got "The In Sound..." before CYH so it kindof ruined bits of it for me. I still think Ill Communication is a far superior album and probably their best.
Licensed to Ill can fuck off and die in my opinion. Irritating trebly beats and "only funny the first time round" rhymes.
And am I the only person who hought "Hello Nasty" was one of their more inventive and entertaining albums of their career? Maybe the actual rap songs ("Body Movin", "Just A Test") were a bit poor, but I loved all those bits where they branched off into bossa-nova ("I Don't Know") and IDM ("And Me"), it just reminds you that the Beasties aren't just a rap band.
I don't think it's possible to argue with "Paul's Boutique". For me it's the references and samples that entertain. You always spot something new with that record.
However, I am dreading an album of new material. To succeed it's going to have to push a big boundary as the last few albums have been conceptually similar. Much as I liked the preceding albums, I think that four years is too long a wait to be greeted with the feeling of "oh no, not this again".

dog latin, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

The Beasties were just on Charlie Rose a couple of nights back -- Pretty boring stuff from both sides of the table. Thing is, if Rose would have had some more informed questions it could have been a really interesting interview.

They were kind of lame on Terry Gross when I heard them -- not completely dull, but disappointingly childish and embarrassed about their backgrounds (one of them being the son of a big art dealer, another of a famous playwrite). They did say some pretty funny stuff about their unexpected transition from being sort of a hip-hop novelty to becoming frat-boy heroes.

I heard the new instrumental disc - it's aight.

Hurting 2, Friday, 31 August 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

> their unexpected transition from being sort of a hip-hop novelty to becoming frat-boy heroes.

Exactly when were they NOT fratboy heroes, post "Fight for Your Right To Party" at least?

Oilyrags, Friday, 31 August 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Cookie Puss = hip hop novelty

Ms Misery, Friday, 31 August 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

I think there was a good bit of time before Licensed to Ill came out that Beasties were signed with Def Jam and getting put on hip-hop bills. Not that I actually remember - I was like five years old.

Hurting 2, Friday, 31 August 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. Their only hip hop records pre-LTI were Cookie Puss (put out on Rat Cage) and the She's On It 12" put out by Def Jam. They did tour with Public Enemy and some other hip hop artists (and Madonna) before LTI was released.

Although I was only 11-13 at this time, I was following them and do remember. :)

Also Ethan, PR is one of only a handful of songs that all three aren't credited with writing. Are you saying their music is much worse when all of them have a hand in it?

Ms Misery, Friday, 31 August 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

The Beastie Boys are usually a bad interview, Mike D (sometimes) excepted.

mike a, Friday, 31 August 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

Back in the day they weren't. Over the years I have lost my VHS recording of them on the Joan Rivers . Haven't been able to find it on the internets either. It was hilarious.

I love "NY State of Mind". Still listen to it regularly.

It was the soundtrack for my and my brother's 18-hour straight drive to see them in Detroit on the last tour. Perfect.

Ms Misery, Friday, 31 August 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

i just learned recently what a cookie puss is.

These pussy crumbs are making me itch. . .

Ethan do you know who is talking on that bit where the guy asks "Who the fuck are the uh Beastie Boys?" I searched long and hard to ID that with no luck.

Ms Misery, Friday, 31 August 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I need that Green Lantern thing.

Oilyrags, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

actually hold up is there an instrumental pauls boutique??

ETHAN WHAT IF JIMI HENDRIX WAS ON LED ZEP IV you dick?!?!!

chaki, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

I played Check Your Head last Thursday and realized I was no longer 24.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

Austin, I can send it to you. Email and remind me if I don't do it tonight.

actually hold up is there an instrumental pauls boutique??

I have a bootleg/demo that has some tracks which were cut from PB but I don't remember about instrumentals. There are instrumentals of a couple of tracks on the Love American Style EP that came out before PB.

I have a CD somewhere I bought off a DJ which was their backing track for one of their tours era '92. Not all PB but there were a few on there.

Never seen an entire instrumental of the album but I'm not a super-huge collector nerd.

Ms Misery, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

steve shasta went to a backyard party and the dust bros performed instrumental pb in full. there are copies out there somewhere.

chaki, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

"actually hold up is there an instrumental pauls boutique??"

i just asked this question on the noize board. someone put up a link to an ultra-pricey promo tape that actually exists of the whole album.

scott seward, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

I should find that demo I got years ago. It could be all instrumental and I just forgot. This was well before The Grey Album so I doubt such a thing would've made much of an impression on me.

Ms Misery, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

You're a gentleman and a scholar, Sam.

Although if that isn't the named rappers on the Boutiqque Beats, what is it? Beasties on other artists beats? That still sounds cool.

Oilyrags, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

It's all other rappers on Beastie beats.

Ms Misery, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

dude i just made up that tracklist

and what, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't read ethan's tracklist. Nor the following Wikipedia one very carefully so caveats apply:
