unaustralian (jabba hands), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

the bliss = yaaaaaaaaaaawn

sam500, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 00:44 (seventeen years ago)

this bliss = bliss

i remember not thinking much of it beyond 'saturn strobe' at the time but i go back to it a hell of a lot, mostly when i need soothing or calming, it's such a restorative sound.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

first track espesh... i could listen to it on repeat

s1ocki, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 00:54 (seventeen years ago)

Chromophobia sounds dated already!

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 01:25 (seventeen years ago)

Re this thread: you've got to be fucking kidding.

mehlt, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

Pantha Du Prince is the techno equivalent of Brightblack Morning Light. One note and stupor inducing. I don't get it.

sam500, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 02:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'll elaborate: This Bliss is surely one of my favourite albums of the decade (whereas Gui Boratto, 'though I do like him, I think much more so as much making a sound at a certain moment - cf. Durrr's comment - that doesn't nearly stick with you the same very Pantha does. Pantha has that ability to reach into me and bring out emotions I very rarely feel when I listen to music; he made me remember why I like music in the first place, and it's that ability to move me, to be lost in the sublime richness of sound, that's both admirable and a rare pleasure.

mehlt, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

In other words, I wouldn't even compare the two.

mehlt, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

i think pantha du prince's emotional payload misses me or something because it's slightly idmish emo techno is pretty cool but it's no classic as far as I'm concerned. Better than Chromophobia slightly, because it's more consistent.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

for some reason i group these albums together as well. i think they were released at the same time.

cutty, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

I also resent how IDM'ness is (which admittedly aren't that strong here) so often regarded pejorative. Just saying.

mehlt, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 04:42 (seventeen years ago)

the concept of IDM is pejorative to all other dance music.

Both albums have a fair bit of dead weight but i listened to them both so much at the same time at th. toughy! Id have to say Pantha though as it makes more sense as an album, theres too many stylistic changes in chromophobia for it to be enjoyed as a piece. But on the dancefloor it slays.

straightola, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 10:36 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't wanted to go back to either album for a year but I think This Bliss is the one that may stand up better now. I preferred Chromophobia at the time that's the important thing, so going for that.

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 11:59 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, ive always thought of these two as being of a piece -- they were released at around the same time (i think, & more imp. i got them at about the same time), and they seemed like they both crossed over to a similar extent, got an equally positive crossover reception, it seemed. also, i played them both enough simultaneously that i never really got a strong sense of each one discretely.

anyway ive gone back to them over the last week and have been surprised by how distinct they are from each other. pantha obviously has it over boratto in terms of depth, and sculpting every sound to be a unique little monument in this vast field of sound. he's definitely a more dextrous craftsman. boratto is glitchier and thinner, but also has more hooks and high points, and more cool rhythmic weirdness. i love this bliss, but i never really listen to the whole thing. chromophobia isn't the flawless execution of an idea, like maybe you could see TB being, but i still don't know if i wouldn't take its inconsistencies over TB's relative monotony (i do love it though). so i vote GB in case it gets steamrolled. though i'll probably regret it if i go listen to pantha again now.

This Bliss is too long.

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

oh wow that was poorly written

little bobby jingles (rent), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

i really didn't like the gui boratto album. too many crappy sine-wave synths playing boring melodies. this bliss was much better.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

the detail on this bliss is kind of mindblowing

I love Chromophobia (yay emusic), so maybe I'll give the other a try too (though it's not on emusic, boo).

Euler, Saturday, 7 March 2009 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

haven't heard 'this bliss,' but 'chromophobia' is fantastic! so so so gorgeous

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Saturday, 7 March 2009 02:07 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know if this is going to sound really bold or challopsy or whatever but there are times I think Pantha took what Lawrence was doing in the early 00's but never took further and did it for him.

mehlt, Saturday, 7 March 2009 02:46 (seventeen years ago)

always found lawrence didn't quite live up to the expectations i had when i read what peepz had to say abt his music. maybe that's just me tho. fave lawrence thing is his remix of superpitcher happiness tho and that is all-time kompakt top 5 for me so fair enough. anybody else think asha is as good if not better than saturn strobe?

or something, Saturday, 7 March 2009 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, asha is the bidness

This is where I stand. I hadn't seen the poll in time to vote, though.

Not enough attention given to Florac if you ask me.
