Cowboy Junkies - The Trinity Session

A serious thread for a seriously great record. It's not a trick likely to be duplicated: take a very good band, a very good vocalist, a single microphone, and a DAT recorder into a unique acoustic space. Bring along a few traditional songs, a few standards, country and otherwise, a few originals, and one Lou Reed song. Stay up all night, play, sing, actually improve on the Lou Reed song, leave a noticeable stamp on Rodgers and Hart and Hank Williams, then go home and sleep. It all seems so... casual. But what a haunting night's work.

I can't think of many of my favorite records that age better than this, or that are harder to identify by the year or even decade they came out in.

are there any connections between Jarmusch' 'Mystery Train' and the Junkies 'Blue Moon'?

One-off masterpiece.

Yep. Every other thing they did is instantly forgettable.

It is a deeply fine record indeed, though a trifle somnolent in places.

Quibble: while the whole mix was famously captured by the one mic, Ms. T. was singing through a PA. And one track (I think it was "Mining for Gold") was done on a different day.

While some of their other work is samey, not all is forgettable. Not "This Street..." Nor most of Crescent Moon.

If you like this and haven't heard "whites off earth now" carve out a late night, a pack of smokes, and a pint of jack for yourself

is Whites Off Earth Now! the first instance of "that thing white people do when they complain about white people"

I was about to post something then realized I'd already said it 8 years ago. I still love "Trinity" beyond measure.

Currently forcing my acoustic 80s band to do "Misguided Angel."

This and Lou Reed's New York, released within two months of each other, were such a refreshing break from 80s recording styles: completely unified albums, mics and everything in the same place throughout.

I think there are still unreleased songs from Sharon, the Sharon Temple sessions album that was scrapped and then partly turned into The Caution Horses.

Windows open on a cool, rainy October morning and this album plus hot coffee is a magic combination.
