i vote we destroy the CD with a sledgehammer for the song choices being so jaw-droppingly dull

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, Editors did a cover of "Lullaby"???????

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

King Boy Pato did a cover of "Inbetween Days"??????????

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

The only two I'd be even remotely interested in are BSP's Forest and TDW's Primary, mostly because those songs, while by far the most popular on their respective albums, aren't quite such predictable choices as the others. And I don't mind the bands involved.

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

was "just like heaven" a predictable choice in 1989?

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

um I don't know which Cure cover compilations you've seen lj but let me assure you that every single song on here is an incredibly predictable choice except for "Cut Here"; "Catch" is probably the 2nd-least-predictable but still, predictable as shit.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

It's majoring on the "dead poppy" stuff.

Mark G, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

I don't actually know anything about "Cut Here"* or The Alkaline Trio so I kinda glossed over that one, but you've got a good point

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.coversproject.com/artist/cure/

oh shit, A Forest has been covered by like 15 different bands

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

was "just like heaven" a predictable choice in 1989?

Dunno if that's rhetorical, but Dinosaur doing JLH seemed pretty weird at the time and people weren't quite sure if they were just taking the piss or what. Even J seemed a bit ambivalent about the Cure - think his quote was something like 'they right nice songs, but then you see this faggy dude in make-up and um uh...'

Frank Sumatra (NickB), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

I'm, ashamedly, an Alkaline Trio stan, so "Cut Here" is about the only one I'm curious to hear of those I haven't already.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

"Cold," from the The Cure album "Pornography" , was covered on the Autumnblaze album "Mute Boy Sad Girl."

The Dinosaur Jr track for the win. Great in '89, great now.

Bernard's Butler (Raw Patrick), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

lol I got the Dino Jr 12" EP even though I already had it on the Fossils CD just to make sure my CD wasn't defective (with the cut off ending and that)

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

King Boy Pato did a cover of "Inbetween Days"??????????

lol

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

never heard any of these except for dino jr (which I love) and don't care to either

akm, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

We got it in the UK on a free flexi with a magazine!

Then the single came out.

One day, they'll find that ending somewhere. And add it to the deluxe issue of "Bug"

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 07:45 (seventeen years ago)

would quite like to hear art brut version

Or there was that one where they got every cure track ever, covered by contributors, into a 10 CD set.

Made a deluxe package, made one per contributor, plus some additional ones.

They presented RobSmith with one, and he was all "Oh, right. Thanks.." (there's a pic somewhere on the site that originated the project)

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

Where is the love for carnage visors

Ye Mad Puffin, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, I'm much more interested in the full comp. When did that come out?

I'm really really intrigued by the idea of the Dandys doing Primary, TBH.

But Jesu doing The Funeral Party would... ohmigod, that would... that would be SO HEAVY I might die from the heaviness.

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

You know what, Kate? I'm about to agree with you again. :-O

Reflex Gaffe (country matters), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

we talked about it a few montsh ago - that Jesus version is streaming on myspace somewhere

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

Jesu, I meant!

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

It's here

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

oooooooooo

Reflex Gaffe (country matters), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

or it's free with this weeks NME.

There, I said it.

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

oh shit this is awesome

Reflex Gaffe (country matters), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

My fave is actually Bat for Lashes' 'Forest'

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

Soulja Boy should cover "Just Like Heaven":

"YOUUUUU!!!! Soft and only YOOOOUUUUUU!!!! Lost and lonely YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!" &c.

Bernard Braden Misreads Stephen Leacock (Marcello Carlin), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

I'm getting the Teenagers to rip me the good tracks on it. They are very useful for some things. They seem to agree that the Esser track is the best. (I am learning to trust Teenagers' musical opinions - at least these ones.)

Oh god, streaming Jesu now... LOVELY. 118 bpm A+++++++

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

wtf why did I sleep on this, this Jesu cover is fucking wow

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Hang on, carry on and listen to Bat For Lashes going A Forest - holy sheeeeeet. Nice. OK, I know there's loads of hate for BFL on this board, but it's a bloody good version, really spooky and atmospheric.

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

The "Let's Get Dan Into Metal" campaign starts here, folks

Reflex Gaffe (country matters), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

There are bits of metal I already like (Opeth and Therion, for example)!

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

Awesome! Opeth are pretty damn good when they're on their game. If you like them (and I haven't actually HEARD Therion yet), then there's plenty of other stuff I reckon you'd dig.

Reflex Gaffe (country matters), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah the Jesu cover = godlike. Inspired choice of song to start with.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

now I want to hear Jesu cover everything, starting with "A Milli"

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

It's a good cover but I never liked the original to begin with (I know, I know...) so I can't entirely get behind it.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

"A Milli" OTOH...

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

Pretty much everything on that MySpace has been awesome so far. Who are Xu Xu Fang and what else have they done?

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

The Dinosaur Jr track for the win. Great in '89, great now.

Yes.

ilxor, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

While we're talking about all these covers, a recent interview with the guy behind it all.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

xxp: Hah! that 'Fascination st.' cover by Xu Xu Fang is indeed amazing

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

Artists seem to feel an everlasting need to pay tribute to their influences by making cover albums. They have now discovered nobody is interested in actually buying those. So that is why they do it in mags like Uncut instead.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, in short.

It sort of started with a 'tribute to Syd Barrett' where the bands made fully fleshed out versions of Barrett songs. How successful it was, artistically, I don't know. The same label went on to do Beefheart and Velvet Underground ones.
