A selected poll of follow-up singles to breakthrough albums by 21st century alt-rock bands

I'm always interested to see the first thing a band puts out after they get their first plaque and how it compares to the song(s) that made them famous, especially in these last few years where the terms of 'success' for modern rock bands have become kind of harder to define.

The Reverend (rev), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

1 1251
2 seven nation army
3 when you were young
4 dirty little secret
5 walk idiot walk

^^solid 5 imo

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

1251 is an interesting one cuz it was kind of a break from the strokes sound esp when ppl were freaking out over whether or not they were using keyboards or not

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

boring answer, but 7NA

My first thought as well.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

little sister is good too but it sounds too much like the strokes

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

the thought for this started with Killers/FOB/MCR and then I kept expanding and eventually included the 2001 "the" bands, kinda wishing I hadn't since the White Stripes will probably soak up a lot of votes and make it less interesting.

pour some suggban on me (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

the answer should be 'gold lion'

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

obviously "The Black Parade" is the only sensible # 2 choice to 7NA though

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

pour some suggban on me (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:01 (seventeen years ago)

meh:
Seven Nation Army

really dude?

Lord Infamous Epsilon (and what), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

actually

Walk Idiot Walk
12:51

really dude?

Lord Infamous Epsilon (and what), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

yeah if I kept widening the field I totally could've included "Gold Lion," "Dashboard," and "I Will Possess Your Heart"

pour some suggban on me (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

i think walk idiot walk was pretty good but i was glad to see that band disappear

goole, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

is this some kind of n/l frontin thing saying you prefer the killers to "seven nation army" or youre for real

Lord Infamous Epsilon (and what), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

actually last time i heard "Walk Idiot Walk" i kinda liked it, never really had listened to it closely. kinda not a fan of the Hives or the White Stripes' whole steez, though. liked all the singles from the first Strokes album, though.

pour some suggban on me (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

not frontin', "When You Were Young" is the shit.

pour some suggban on me (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

"I Will Possess Your Heart"

Should be "Soul Meets Body"; Transatlanticism was their breakthrough album.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

not frontin', "When You Were Young" is the shit.

a song completely saved by its "Jacques Lu Cont Thin White Duke" remix

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

I think this is between "When You Were Young, "Little Sister," and "Seven Nation Army" for me.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

I'm framing this in terms of U.S. radio play and sales certifications. Plans had 2 top 10 Modern Rock hits and went platinum, Transatlanticism did not.

pour some suggban on me (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

i've never heard the "Young" remix, but i didn't really understand the hype over his "Mr. Brightside" mix and don't like the JLC-produced new stuff.

pour some suggban on me (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

little sister is a total jam

4. "Do You Want To"
5. "Walk Idiot Walk"

The Reverend (rev), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

whither "Nine in the Afternoon"?

The Reverend (rev), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

A bunch of pretty good tracks in here - "Walk Idiot Walk" is probably my favorite. But I'm voting based on "most improved," which means I'm giving it to..."Ride."

"Gold Lion" would have trumped that, though, if only for the "Play That Funky Music"-quoting guitar solo. Also I'm kind of attached to it b/c all last summer I was borrowing a phone to use as an alarm clock and the only plausible wake-up ringtones she had were "Blitzkrieg Bop," some Euro thing called "You Take Me Higher," and the aforementioned Yeah Yeah Yeahs song.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

all shitty but walk idiot walk i guess

dag, i was racking my brain that there was at least one other big emo pop band i was forgetting.

pour some suggban on me (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

7 nation army

but quotsa are slighted by this poll. rated r was their commercial breakthrough, though a modest one (strong sales, minor hit with "lost art of keeping a secret", radio & video play for "monsters in the parasol" & "feel good hit of the summer")

songs for the deaf was the follow up, and like elephant, the bigger hit

welcome little swetty (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

You're probably right. Transatlanticism did go gold, though, which was kind of a big deal for an album on Barsuk, and I heard "The Sound of Settling" on the radio at the time. (Plus, they played a couple of songs from the record on The O.C.)

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

7NA is the best song here, yeah (though QOTSA are the best band).

chap, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

obviously "The Black Parade" is the only sensible # 2 choice to 7NA though

^^^

white stripes were at bonnaroo when i was there a few years ago. i was back at my tent when "seven nation army" started and the riff was actually vibrating through the earth. it's a monster.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

re US attention & sales: rated r was a bigger deal in the UK. so fair play

welcome little swetty (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

yah QOTSA were one of those gray area bands i had second thoughts about including, was thinking more about bands that made a big impact all at once with one album.

The Killers – “When You Were Young”

fyi i just listened to this on u-tube and it sucks dick

it's darn and ielle is hot (and what), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

i hated it at first, but it's a real grower. do u like "Mr. Brightside" or any other Killers songs?

pour some suggban on me (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

i dont think so

i think this is one of those things where like jaymc thinks "what you know" is the greatest rap shit he'll ever hear

it's darn and ielle is hot (and what), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

thats like me n rock music i mean

i dont bump shit enough to appreciate the subtle shit that makes it good 2u im just down 4 novelty like white stripes joint has a big fkn bassline i dig

it's darn and ielle is hot (and what), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

let's be clear than I would never ever call The Killers "subtle"

kumquat millionaire (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

I agree that "When You Were Young is a total grower; I don't think I actually liked it until I got Rock Band.

I'm picking Franz Ferdinand here.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

i voted This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race but in my heart i am probably voting for the kanye remix

temple of butts (cankles), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

also lol at Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco trading places with their followups

you mean success-wise or what? cause Cork Tree outsold A Fever You Can't Sweat Out and had more hits, just as Infinity On High outsold Pretty. Odd. and had more hits.

kumquat millionaire (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

I think I like the QOTSA song more than anything else here but like the OP semi-suggested earlier it seems somehow cheap voting for it... tho i'm not sure why. Franz song would come closeish but that rhyme of party and arty made me want to stab every time

Luka ModReq (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

you mean success-wise or what?

I meant stylistically; FOB became full-on quirk-rock and P!ATD became conventional-sounding uptempo rock (both with dubious singers)

meme economist (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

i stan for the killers regardless but "when you were young" is awesome. i mean the huge guitar refrain

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

btw yall are underrating "dirty little secret", it has the best pure hook out of any of these songs

lol @ post secret rip-off video

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

hmm i dunno, i don't really understand the FOB/PATD thing, Panic definitely went through a transition from A to B but I would describe those respective points as "quirk" and "conventional," although they definitely leaned more classic rock/sophistipop.

kumquat millionaire (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

I agree with that, and I'm saying FOB went from "conventional" to "quirk" at the same time.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

AAR like one of the only successful modern rock bands that reminds me of what successful modern rock was like when i was a kid. str8 hooky and fun punk-pop, none of this nickelback or whatever half-grunge sludge or the 34th offspring single

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

Why didn't these guys blow up?:

and yeah Jordon OTM about AAR, whenever their video comes on I don't change the channel which is more than I can say for like 99% of rock bands

lol "Jordon"

Graduate of the Fantasia Barrino Instatoot of Fine Literature (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

oh dude, i love that first rooney cd. funny, they did kind of blow up when metro station stole the hook from "i'm shakin" for "shake it"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

AAR are cool but "Dirty Little Secret" is not my fav. "Gives You Hell" is actually growing on me, which I did not expect.

"Is It Any Wonder" > "In My Place" though. :)
