Aquarius

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

That will probably win this, won't it.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

"open the light" - evokes midnight walks with my discman in my hometown ca. 2001

the pink press threat file (donna rouge), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I haven't actually clicked on it yet. And I'm having second thoughts. Roygbiv and Happy Cycling being the two pushing their way into my mind.

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

it's been a long time since i've listened to this. without being able to check it rite now, comes down to "happy cycling" "telephasic workshop" or "turqoise hexagon sun" for me. x-post i always thought happy cycling was kind of the clear winner, it's what i'm voting 4.

h.o.u.s.e. (Matt P), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

I know which one you're voting, Dan, and it's a fine choice.

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

I absolutely love and adore "Turquoise Hexagon Sun" but am considering voting "Telephasic Workshop".

xp: lol at tripping up lj a little

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

telephasic boringanswer

this is officially reconsideration corner

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

turquoise hexagon sun or pete standing alone

eman, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

(I should mention I was considering "Telephasic Workshop" because it was playing while I made the poll. Now that I'm on "Turquoise Hexagon Sun" I'm reminded that it is one of the greatest tracks ever recorded.)

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

Roygbiv easily - despite it being criminally short (understandably tho)

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

telephasic workshop cause i loves me some cut up vocals

ledge, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

^ dis. strongly swayed by both THS & RGB, but could not deny the boring (amazing) answer, even after lo so many years

welcome little swetty (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

Who's gonna come out as a huge fan of "Kaini Industries"?

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

"Olson" is one or two extra minutes short of being my choice fwiw

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

i'm not a hater but this is still not as good as Boc Maxima imo.

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

i love happy cycing cuz it still sounds so WEIRD to me after all these years.

x-post oh i love most of the in-betweens too, i just never put track names to them really.

h.o.u.s.e. (Matt P), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

I never realized that "Happy Cycling" wasn't on the original version! I guess they tacked it onto the end so as to not fuck up the flow of the original tracklist, but I always thought it was perfect as a closer since it marries BoC's ability to make seemingly out of place samples seem fitting and creepy (the rhythmic seagulls in the 1st half of the song) and their straightup booty shaking tendencies (the buttrumbling bass in the second half).

I shall always respect my elders (Z S), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

Voting track by track is not the point but jesus it's "Aquarius" easy peasy.

King Boiled Potato (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

sixtyten

unaustralian (jabba hands), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

looking forward to the Geogaddi poll so people can vote for fucking "Dandelion" or something.

King Boiled Potato (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

looking forward for their best album to be polled so I can watch Dayvan Cowboy and Peacock Tail (and the last 70 seconds of Chromakey Dreamcoat) fight it out in glorious combat

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

WAHTEVER. or, really surprised that as a prog fan yr fave album is the one that develops the least.

ledge, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

them's fighting words

it's a simple case of "slightly better songs" for me, all three albums cover quite a lot of ground imo

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

campfire whatever is obv their weakest because

- drums are mad weak
- recycling their aesthetic in uninteresting ways

also hope NV you're not suggesting sixtyten is a minor track: it's huge

unaustralian (jabba hands), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't fully comprehended geogaddi yet, still holding out on that one leaping out and claiming my brain one of these listens

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

It's an album, not an alien from a Carpenter movie

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

Indeed, Dan, but it hasn't quite clicked yet with me

("You Could Feel The Sky" ftw on that count as things stand)

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

196-Bastard-9

King Boiled Potato (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

Geogaddi is still my favourite but I'm going to give Music... another spin now. The Campfire Headphase was always a bit boring and not just because I'd gone well beyong the point of needing a third BoC album.

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

I wasn't singling you out Mr Hands, no

King Boiled Potato (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

campfire headphase was potentially great songs that never progressed or developed iirc. but gonna listen to all this crap again tomorrow.

ledge, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

geogaddi = too much filler.

ledge, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

ledge, madness. "chromakey dreamcoat" burbles along nicely for 4 and a bit minutes before going all "hey we are about to transcend ourselves" and busting out their most gorgeous minute of music hitherto heard

and then they outdo even that with "peacock tail" and "dayvan cowboy" to such an extent that the rest of the album barely matters (it's still pretty good, mind)

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

This poll would be more interesting if everyone voted for best track title, as I will...

ilxor, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

so "An Eagle In Your Mind" then

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I would love to hear someone use the melody to Roybgiv as the basis for an actual song, preferably with really low bass and girls singing in harmony. I voted for it as well, mostly because I remember it being the first thing I heard and then being incredibly disappointed the rest of the album wasn't like that.

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

track titles on this and Geogaddi are mostly amazing...again by the 3rd album it was like someone else trying to come with 'BOC' titles.

unaustralian (jabba hands), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

Roygbiv was also the first thing I heard and initially had Matt's reaction, but then the rest of the album totally grew on me. That said Geogaddi is better, I think.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

geogaddi = too much filler.

Who's gonna come out as a huge fan of "Kaini Industries"?

― Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, February 24, 2009 5:26 PM (37 minutes ago) Bookmark

ha! i might. or "bocuma." it's the "filler" that's the best part of BoC albums imo. that's why i say fuck "aquarius," was always my least favorite track on this album and the only one i skip. the funk shit on it just doesn't work at all with the rest of the album.

if i went for a "non-minor" "non-filler" track it might be turqoise hexagon sun. but really "kaini industries" + "bocuma" are what this album means to me when i think of its best attributes.

mark cl, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

i occasionally watch this fanmade clip

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

Also: Best Song Title On "Drukqs"

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

YES blueski, that is possibly the best fan-made video ever

I want sprinkles (country matters), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

roygbiv is a straight John Carpenter rip with breakbeats under it and a kid's voice.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

^^^ not an insult btw.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

Now closing the book on "Magic Window" to storm the Geogaddi poll.

King Boiled Potato (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

Geopolli

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

ROYGBIV video genius for the first minute, but then runs out of inspiration and just peters out towards the end. much like the original track.

Hmmm.. I actually listened to this as late as today, but with this genre of albums, I do have trouble separating the tracks from each other. So I find it hard to vote. Great album though.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 01:24 (seventeen years ago)

true about IABPOITC, song for song. plus it's their best tune

welcome little swetty (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

if this EP had been a little less good, i would have liked geogaddi a lot more better

Me! Was often tempted to sample the riff and build a tune out of it, but I figured I'd probably ruin it.

ecuador_with_a_c, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

"Aquarius" as the best standalone track, though there are so many interesting bits and pieces on this album which serve to complete a unified aesthetic, that MHTRTC doesn't really lend itself well to POO ILX polling mechanics. I would be more apt to put "Aquarius" on a mixtape, but while listening to the album, I'm usually most taken its the odd negative spaces.

Agree with whoever said the short tracks are what makes this. Prefer Geogaddi but this one is murkier and murk is too rare. Vote goes to Eagle In Your Mind for drowning everything in murk & inspiring some appropriately slow and sickly sci fi from my sixth form self for the first and only time. An album for mornings when yr so tired you can't remember who you are.

ogmor, Thursday, 5 March 2009 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

Kaini Industries... though my vote for best BOC track would be "amo bishop roden" from IABPOITC

Frogbs, they're a sinister band, but more so on subsequent releases (geogaddi is downright terrifying in places), and it's really only until you delve into some of the hidden messages and references that it all starts getting a bit creepy because musically it's really pleasant on the whole

cool, I just spotted this at the local shop and listened to it a couple days ago

hadn't heard it in full for a decade, I know a lot of people have said this but this stuff was obviously a huge influence on vaporwave

hits a lot harder in your 30s than your 20s I think, especially now that I have kids. it reminds me how weird and uncertain things felt back then. something I realize now is that this record is actually pretty minimal. there's not really any superfluous elements or hidden grooves or anything that was common in albums like this. your mind kind of has to fill in the blanks.

pity the vinyl doesn't include "Happy Cycling"
